Spreading A Love for God and His Glory July 23, 2017 Ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Psalm 4:4

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 95:6-7 Leader: Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker. All: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. *HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD The splendor of the King clothed in majesty. Let all the earth rejoice, let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light and darkness tries to hide and trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice. How great is our God, sing with me. How great is our God, and all will see how great, how great is our God. Age to age he stands and time is in his hands. Beginning and the end, beginning and the end; the Godhead three in one: Father, Spirit, Son. The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb. (Bridge 2x) Name above all names, you are worthy of our praise and my heart will sing how great is our God. (Chorus 2x) - 2 -

*BEHOLD OUR GOD Who has held the oceans in his hands? Who has numbered every grain of sand? Kings and nations tremble at his voice. All creation rises to rejoice. Behold our God, seated on his throne. Come let us adore him. Behold our King, nothing can compare. Come let us adore him! Who has given counsel to the Lord? Who can question any of his words? Who can teach the one who knows all things? Who can fathom all his wondrous deeds? Who has felt the nails upon his hands, bearing all the guilt of sinful man? God eternal, humbled to the grave, Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign! You will reign forever, you will reign forever! (2x) God Calls Us The Lord summons his people to worship and we respond in obedience. The Lord s call is a call to action. We gather, praise, adore, give thanks, etc. The Call to Worship is a joyful summons and a clear reminder that worship is our coming into God s presence by his command, and not our command that he come into our presence. *PRAYER OF PRAISE - 3 - *Indicates when to stand. *GOD BE MERCIFUL TO ME God, be merciful to me; on Thy grace I rest my plea Plenteous in compassion Thou, blot out my transgressions now; Wash me, make me pure within; cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. My transgressions I confess; grief and guilt my soul oppress. I have sinned against Thy grace, and provoked Thee to Thy face. I confess Thy judgment just; speechless, I Thy mercy trust. Broken, humbled to the dust, by Thy wrath and judgment just, Let my contrite heart rejoice, and in gladness hear Thy voice; From my sins O hide Thy face, blot them out in boundless grace. Gracious God, my heart renew, make my spirit right and true. Cast me not away from Thee, let Thy Spirit dwell in me; Thy salvation s joy impart, steadfast make my willing heart. COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: 1 Samuel 15:22-23 Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. All: Have mercy on us Lord. We often choose sacrifice over obedience. We presume upon your grace, and delight in our show of faith; yet our hearts can be far from you. Forgive us of our disobedience, when we have chosen to love our sin more than to love you. Forgive us of our rebellion, when we have willingly walked away from your commands, in order to pursue the sins of our flesh. Keep us from self-worship, disguised as true religion. Purify and cleanse us by the blood of our Savior Jesus. Amen. - 4 -

SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Exodus 34:6-7 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children s children, to the third and the fourth generation. *SCRIPTURAL CONFESSION OF FAITH: Colossians 1:15-20 All: Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. God Cleanses Us The biblical response to God s call to be in his presence is confessing our sins. We humble ourselves when we approach our God. This is a corporate prayer of all God s people. It is a great privilege of the gospel that we can stand forgiven before the Lord of glory. - 5 -

*BY THY MERCY Jesus, Lord of life and glory, bend from heaven your gracious ear; While our waiting souls adore thee, friend of helpless sinners, hear: From the depth of nature's blindness, from the hardening power of sin, From all malice and unkindness, from the pride that lurks within, By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. When temptation sorely presses, in the day of Satan's power, In our times of deep distresses, in each dark and trying hour. When the world around is smiling, in the time of wealth and ease, Earthly joys our hearts beguiling, in the day of health and peace. Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) In the weary hours of sickness, in the times of grief and pain, When we feel our mortal weakness, when all human help is vain. In the solemn hour of dying, in the awful judgment day, May our souls, on thee relying, find thee still our Rock and Stay. (Chorus 2x) OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) - 6 -

THE SAVING ONE What mercy was revealed, what selflessness and peace My fate was surely sealed until He rescued me His pardon for my sin, His bounty for my need From slavery and shame, I am redeemed And heaven can't contain the glory of the Son Jesus is the Christ, the Saving One His love has made a way, the grave is overcome Jesus is the Christ, the Saving One No fear can hold me down, no darkness steal my joy For blood has been poured out, the enemy destroyed Death could not hold Him down, the cross was not enough To steal away His love for He is God (Chorus 2x) Jesus is the Christ, the Saving One - 7 -

Guest Pastor Aaron Scott, Church of the Cross, Whitefish Practicing Death - Psalm 4 (ESV) To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! 2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah 3 But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. 4 Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. 6 There are many who say, Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD! 7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. 8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. - 8 -

Sermon Notes Rhythm shakes language down into the nervous system. - John Ciardi O God, who appointed the day for labor and the night for rest. Grant that we may rest in peace and quietness during the coming night So that tomorrow we may go forth to our appointed labors Take us into your holy keeping that no evil may befall us Nor any ill come near our home When at last our days our ended and our work is finished Grant that we may depart in your peace In the sure hope of that glorious kingdom Where there is day without night Light without darkness And life without shadow of death forever; Through Jesus Christ the Light of the world. - Book of Common Prayer for the end of the day God Consecrates Us Consecrate means to make holy, to set apart. The Word of God does that for the lives of believers. Through the sermon, confessions of faith, and the offering we are sanctified for service to our Lord to joyfully offer up our lives to him. Every going to sleep is a little death - a rehearsal for the real thing. How do you end your day? - 9 -

God Communes with Us The Lord strengthens and nourishes our faith through a sacramental meal. Through Jesus, communion with God has been reestablished. The covenant has been renewed. The Lord s Supper is the gospel made visible for us and we share in it as the full community of God s people. *TAKE MY LIFE Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to Thee Take my moments and my days Let them flow in ceaseless praise Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of Thy love Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee Take my voice and let me sing Always only for my King Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from Thee Take my silver and my gold Not a mite would I withhold Take my intellect and use Ev'ry power as You choose Here am I, all of me Take my life, it's all for Thee Take my will and make it Thine It shall be no longer mine Take my heart it is Thine own It shall be Thy royal throne Take my love my Lord I pour At Your feet its treasure store Take myself and I will be Ever only all for Thee At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION *YOUR LOVE OH LORD Your love, oh Lord, reaches to the heavens. Your faithfulness stretches to the sky. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains. Your justice flows like the ocean s tide. I will lift my voice to worship you, my King. I will find my strength in the shadow of your wings. (Repeat all) Your love, oh Lord, reaches to the heavens. Your faithfulness stretches to the sky. *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. God Commissions Us Having been richly blessed by the Lord in our worship, we are sent forth as his ambassadors of reconciliation into the world. Our worship of God as his people now extends into our lives throughout the week. We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to him in all areas of our lives.
