THE BROKEN PROMISE Daily Devotional 21

SUNDAY LET S PRAY Dear Father, help me to have a joyful heart today. Help me to stay true to You and not to worship idols. Be with me as I read Your Word. Teach me more about You and how I can share Your love with someone else today. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 32:1 14 2

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS The Israelites were eager to get to the Promised Land. They were not patient enough to wait for directions from Moses, who was God s appointed leader. They wanted to make their own image, or idol, to lead them instead. The people demanded an answer from Aaron. Aaron told them to give him their golden earrings and he melted them down and made a golden calf. They had a big feast, offered burnt offerings and danced and played around the idol. The Israelites broke their promise to God. When God saw what was going on, He was angry and told Moses He was going to destroy them all, because of their broken promise to Him. Because of Moses love for his people he interceded on behalf of the Israelites. He repeated the promises that God promised to Abraham and because of Moses prayers, God withdrew His threat of harming the Israelites. I want you to think about two things today. Firstly, can you work out what commandments the Israelites broke? Secondly, think about the amazing thing that Moses did. Moses did what we call interceding. This is when someone prays to God on behalf of someone else, but with Moses it was an entire nation! We can intercede through our prayers for someone else. Think of someone you can pray for today. UNSCRAMBLE THIS VERSE - EXODUS 32:3 So all the broke people off the golden ears, earrings which were brought in their and them to Aaron. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? 3

MONDAY LET S PRAY Dear God, thank You for another day. Help me to keep Your commandments so I can share Your love with others. Allow Your light to shine through me today. Thank You for my Bible. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 32:15 25 4

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Our reading today tells us that Moses took the tables of stone (on which God had written the Ten Commandments with His own finger,) down the mountain. When he saw what was going on he became very angry and broke the tables of stone before the people, signifying that they had broken their promise with God. Moses ground down the golden calf into a powder, threw it into the stream and made the Israelites drink it to show them how worthless an idol is. Notice in verse 24 that Aaron told Moses that the calf had jumped out of the fire. Aaron was actually lying to Moses; as we have already read in Exodus 32:4, Aaron made the golden calf. Aaron was the chief offender in the sin of Israel because he didn t have the courage to stand strong for God. We are told the apostasy would not have happened if he had not given into the wishes of the people. Aaron repented and through Moses interceding on his behalf, God forgave him and restored him to his honoured position. There is a lesson for us to learn from Aaron. Always remember to stand strong for God, no matter what the pressure is from people around you. Ask God to give you the strength you need to stand strong for Him. UNSCRAMBLE THIS VERSE - EXODUS 32:16 Now the were the writing of God, and the was the tablets writing of God engraved on the work tablets. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? 5

TUESDAY LET S PRAY Dear Father, help me to be faithful and obedient to You. Walk beside me, Lord, to teach me Your ways. Help me to be thoughtful towards others, especially to my family. Help me to understand Your Word today. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 32:26 35 6

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Our reading tells us that the tribe of Levi chose to gather on Moses side. They had not taken part in the idolatrous worship of the golden calf. We also know that there were great numbers from the other tribes who repented and humbled their hearts before God. Verse 28 tells us that three thousand died as a result of the sin which they committed because they did not want to repent and turn away from the worship of idols. They did not want to worship the one and true living God. God in His mercy gives us freedom of choice. Even after the Israelites sinned, God still gave them a choice and a chance to repent. Three thousand chose not to, even after the mighty power and miracles that God had displayed before them. They chose not to give up their idols. Pray and ask God to help you make the right choices in life. UNSCRAMBLE THIS VERSE - EXODUS 32:31 Then Moses committed to the LORD and said, Oh, these have returned a great sin, and have made for themselves a god people of gold! WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? 7

WEDNESDAY LET S PRAY Dear Father, thank You for Your great love for me. Help me to do things Your way instead of my way. Thank You for my Bible and help me to understand what I read in it today. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 33:1 11 8

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Our Bible reading today tells us that God called the Israelites a stiff necked people, which means they were being proud and stubborn and wanted to do things their way instead of God s way. God asked them to remove all their ornaments, or jewellery, and the Israelites spent time in humbling themselves before God. Moses set up a tent outside the encampment where he spent time interceding on behalf of the Children of Israel. The Israelites could go out to the tent where Moses was and pray with him, repenting and seeking God s mercy. In verse 9 we hear that God descended in a cloud over Moses tent. There was great joy among the Israelites and they each worshipped God at the door of their tents. Moses had a great love for the children of Israel despite their wrongdoings and the way they treated him. Think about your Mum and Dad. They also love you despite the wrong things you might do. Pray for your Mum and Dad and remember to tell them how much you love and appreciate them. UNSCRAMBLE THIS VERSE - EXODUS 33:6 So the Children of themselves stripped of their ornaments by Mount Israel Horeb. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? 9

THURSDAY LET S PRAY Dear Lord, thank You for my Mum and Dad. Help me to appreciate what they do for me every day. Please forgive me for my sins and thank You for sending Jesus to die on the cross for me. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 33:12 23 10

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Today we read that Moses wanted assurance that God was with him and in verse 14 we find that God did grant his request. But Moses wanted more. In verse 18, Moses asked God to show him His glory. This was a very bold request, as in verse 20 God told him no man has seen His face and lived. But God is gracious and told Moses that He would hide him in a cleft, or a large gap in the rock, on the mountain, cover him with His hand and pass by him. But Moses was only allowed to see God s back. Moses knew that if he was allowed to see God it would give him the assurance that God was with Him for his work ahead. Today we have the privilege of the Bible, including the writings about Jesus life and teachings when He walked this earth. Jesus, the Son of God, came in human form to this earth, so that the people of those times could look on His face. Jesus came to this earth to show us what God is like. Jesus told his disciples in John 14:9 He who has seen Me has seen the Father. UNSCRAMBLE THIS VERSE - EXODUS 33:23 Then I will back; away My hand, and you shall see My take but My face shall not be seen. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? 11

FRIDAY LET S PRAY Dear God, thank You for keeping me safe and well for another week. Help me to read my Bible more so I can understand what You have done for me. Come into my heart today. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 34:1 28 12

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS God asked Moses to cut two tables of stone, like the first ones that Moses broke, and take them up to Mt Sinai for God to write the Ten Commandments on. In verse 9, Moses again interceded for the Israelites and asked God to forgive them for their sin. God pardoned them and restored His Covenant with them. But God reminded Moses that they are to worship no idols but worship Him alone. Verse 28 tells us Moses was on the mountain with God the second time for 40 days and 40 nights. God miraculously sustained him for that time as Moses didn t eat or drink. Check out Luke 4:1 2. Are there any similarities? UNSCRAMBLE THIS VERSE - EXODUS 34:17 You molded make shall gods for no yourselves. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? 13

SABBATH LET S PRAY Dearest Heavenly Father, thank You for the Sabbath day, which I can spend with You. Teach me to be kind and help me to be a blessing to someone today. I love you, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - 2 PETER 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise... but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Exodus 34:29 35 14

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Moses had such a special relationship with God. It was so special that when he had spent time with God, Moses face was shining so brightly the children of Israel could not look at his face. So when this happened Moses had to put a veil on his face when he spoke to the people. We can let God s light shine through us by the life we lead. But we need to spend time with God through reading our Bibles and through prayer so the people around us can see our light shining brightly for Him. SABBATH QUIZ 1. Into the likeness of what animal did Aaron mold the idol? 2. What did Moses break in front of the people when he saw the idol worship? 3. Which tribe of Israel chose not to worship the idol? 4. How long did Moses spend with God when he went up on the mountain for the second time to receive the Ten Commandments? 5. What did Moses cover his face with when it was shining with the glory of God? 15

This week we will study about what happens when a promise is broken. Torchlight Moses was overwhelmed. He had just come from the presence of God s glory, and though he had been warned of what was taking place, he was unprepared for that dreadful exhibition of the degradation of Israel. His anger was hot. To show his abhorrence of their crime, he threw down the tables of stone, and they were broken in the sight of all the people, thus signifying that they had broken their covenant with God, so God had broken His covenant with them.
