Dear Friends in Christ, This month at Central is a time of celebrating the past and looking forward toward the future. In recent years, many have lamented that the church isn t what it used to be. Some have even suggested that the church is dying. Our presiding bishop, the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, has said recently that the church isn t dying, rather, God is doing a new thing. God is doing a new thing. We humans may not always like change, but we remember that our God is the Creator. The One who brought the universe into being is always doing new things. There are so many things to be thankful for here at Central this November. God has blessed us and given us the opportunity to bless many others over the past 90 years. As we remember those blessings, we realize that God was with us in all the good times of celebration. We also remember all the times where our concerns were very great, and we realize that God was with us then, too. We can look back on the past 90 years and see that God was able to use both our celebrations and concerns as opportunities to do a new thing. I am looking forward to celebrating the 90th anniversary with you and working together as we discern what new things God is calling us to do in the coming years. Blessings, Pastor Carolyn 2

THANK YOU to everyone for all the birthday messages, hugs, handshakes and cards for my 90th birthday celebration. Special thanks to the Tuesday Bible Study Group and Diakonia Circle members. Mae Hansel THANK YOU to all the members of Central for the gracious scholarship provided to me. The University of Hawaii at Manoa has been treating me very well these first couple of months. I heard many of you are curious as to how I ve adapted to living on O ahu, well it s fantastic. My roommate and I do everything together and are very similar, which is a blessing and one less thing to stress me out. Currently I m enrolled in five classes: two in the honors program and one junior level course. Classes have kept me plenty busy; however, I ve found time to go to the beach. Surfing is fun but, I prefer bodyboarding or as the locals call it sponging. There is nothing more relaxing after a long day of class than heading down to Waikiki and doing some sponging with my friends. Life in Hawaii is wonderful, yet I still think about home often. I look forward to coming back during winter break and seeing all of you. There is a Lutheran church 10 minutes away walking from me that I will check out eventually. Thanks for the support 2,500 miles away and of course the scholarship! Bring your favorite traditional Lutheran Potluck dish to share QUILT SUNDAY On Sunday, November 20th, the beautiful quilts that the Piecemakers group has been working on all year will be on display in the Sanctuary. You will have the opportunity to purchase a quilt to give as a gift for Christmas or for yourself to snuggle under on the coming cold winter nights. Through the generosity of some folks who have donated fabric for the quilts, the cost for a quilt will not be increased. The quilts that are not sold will be given to many help organizations throughout the community. All proceeds from the sale of the quilts will go back into purchasing supplies such as batting, backing, and whatever else is needed to make more quilts. Many thanks to all of the dedicated quilters of the Piecemakers group. They all give at least six hours a month to this wonderful ministry. 5
Our Synod will be electing a new bishop at our assembly next spring. In light of that, pastors and congregations are being asked to reflect on the following questions. OTC News: Thanks to all of the wonderful people that stepped forward to volunteer at OTC this year. We have closed registration to K-5 and started a waiting list. We are currently serving 50 K-5; 20 Middle School and 10 High School kids. We still need a K/1 and 3rd Grade coleader/sub and tutors in the Study Hall on Tue/ Thurs 4:15-5:15. Even just an hour a month will make a difference to the program. Thank you to all those that have sponsored a student at OTC this year. Thanks to Irene Hausken and the donation of items purchased using her Thrivent Action Dollars, the OTC kids enjoyed a fun Harvest Party on October 27th. I will have pictures following the event for you to add. Needed: Used candles for Christmas gift Project. Service Projects This year at OTC, our students are gaining an understanding of community and world needs by participating in weekly service projects. Our goal is to foster empathy and build on the belief that every person counts and every person can make a difference. One of those service projects is making breakfast and lunch bags for our homeless guests, coming later this month. You can help us out by providing items from the list below. This will be an ongoing project through to the month of March. CANTICUS VOCAL ENSEMBLE Englewood Second Sunday Concert Series, Sunday, November 13th at 2:00 pm at Englewood Christian Church. Admission by donation. Canticus, Yakima s newest chamber choral ensemble, will present their first concert, A Choral Collage, on Sunday, Nov. 13th, beginning at 2:00 pm. This s part of the Second Sunday Concert Series sponsored by Englewood Christian Church and the Finch Family. The program will consist of choral music by composers such as Victoria, Whitacre, Gjeilo and many others. Admission is by donation at the door. SONS OF NORWAY 36th Annual LUTEFISK & MEATBALL DINNER & BAKE SALE. Saturday, November 5 from 5 7 p.m. at Holy Family Church, 5315 Tieton Drive. Adults, $20. Kids under 12, $10. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets available at Deep Sea Deli. $1 from each ticket goes toward the Sorenson-Odin Scholarship Fund To everyone who made Oktoberfest a wonderfully fun event for all. We had about 500 children come through our church on Halloween night. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped decorate and were here to shepherd the children through our Building. EMERGENCY WINTER WEATHER SHELTER NEEDS (Specific info on volunteer duties is available in the Church Office) Central Friends, it is time start preparing for the EWWS Program. Our projected opening date is November 15 and we have committed to housing up to 20 guests each night. In order to make this a safe and successful ministry, we need your help. Here are some ways you might consider getting involved. Evening Greeters work as a team of 2 (ideally we would have at least 7 teams of 2 one team taking one night each week plus several substitutes to cover illness and vacations) approx.: 8:30 to 10 pm Morning Greeter approx. 6:30-7:30 am Breakfast Volunteer you may come and serve breakfast to the guests or provide breakfast for greeter or other volunteer to serve or provide items for other volunteers to use to make and serve breakfast Other Meals provide items to make lunches for the guests (weekends) or make and bring lunches to be given to the guests RESOURCES donate items to be used in the EWWS There will be a box marked EWWS in the Narthex for any resources donations you wish to bring. Matthew 25:34-6 October 21, 2016 Dear Friends in Christ, Last winter, Central Lutheran Church (CLC) began serving the community as one of the Extreme Winter Weather Shelters (EWWS) for homeless men. We are happy to report that these shelters helped provide the care needed so that there were no winter weather related deaths in Yakima during last year s program. It s that time of the year once again, and we are in the process of planning this winter s efforts with Yakima Neighborhood Health Services (YNHS.) Last month, a group from CLC (Pastor Carolyn, Dave Hellerich, Felicity Pittman, Ann and Bruce Willis, Steve Hill, Holly Gonseth, and Jason Moos) met with the EWWS program coordinators from YNHS. The purpose of this meeting was to review last year s experiences and consider our plan for the coming year. CLC s involvement for 2016-2017 includes: Continuing hosting the shelter, along with Englewood Christian Church, this year from November 15 th, 2016 through March 15 th, 2017 from 9pm to 7am. Increasing the maximum number of beds from 15 (last year) to 20 (this year). The CLC Church Council took up this proposal during the September meeting and, given the success of last year s program, voted to approve. The council also asked for the formation of an oversight task force that will monitor the program and report to council regularly regarding status, issues that need resolution, etc. Dave Hellerich has agreed to serve as the primary point of contact for CLC s task force, relating to the church council and YNHS. This will continue to be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to participate in by providing food for meals, sundry items for the guests, and more. Wish Lists will be coming soon!
