5TH GRADE COLLEGE PARK CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON OVERVIEW * 2017-2018 CURRICULUM: How Majestic is Your Name, published by Children Desiring God WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN OVER THE YEAR Each of the lessons in How Majestic Is Your Name presents glorious truths about God and calls for a response toward Him. More important though is the cumulative effect caused by interconnecting the lessons which work together to build toward a response to the greatness of God. So although the placement of some lessons is arbitrary, most of the lessons have been placed in an intentional order. First the character and work of God is shown through His Hebrew names. Then Jesus is shown as fully God and a further revelation of the character of God. The redemptive role of Jesus is presented through the names, Lamb of God and High Priest The culmination of the age and the judgment of man are then discussed. These all build toward the truth that God is the only answer to the longings in man s soul and the only answer to man s sin problem. God s awesome nature and majestic name require a response. The eyeopening and convicting work of the Holy Spirit is man s only hope for responding to God and treasuring His great name. Such a faith-producing response enables us to suffer for the name of the God who will work to protect His great name. In order for faith to grow, children must first see the greatness of God and their own unworthiness. As that sense of their condition before an Almighty God grows, the possibility of response to such a great God grows. DATE LESSON 8/20/17 Names 8/27/17 God s Names MEMORY VERSE CATECHISM QUESTION Psalm 8:1 Q 1: What is our only hope in life and death? A 1: That we are not our own but belong, body and soul, both in life and death, to God and to our Savior Jesus Christ. Psalm 20:7 Q 2: What is God? A 2: God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, unchangeable in His power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through Him and by His will. - Names in Bible times were not merely labels, but a reference to a person s character or destiny. - Sometimes, when a person had an encounter with God, God changed that person s names to reflect a change in his character or destiny. - God is so great that He uses many names to reveal to us who He is. - God s name is powerful. There is help, protection, power, authority, and victory in the name of God. - God will protect His name. 9/3/17 Elohim, God (Who is the Strong Creator) Isaiah 40:28 Q 3: How many persons are there in God? DATE LESSON MEMORY VERSE CATECHISM QUESTION 1/14/18 Father, Abba Father John 1:12 Q 17: What is idolatry? - God the Father is the perfect Father. A 17: Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our - Through trusting in Jesus, we can have a close, personal relationship hope and happiness, significance and security. with God, who adopts prodigals as His children. 1/21/18 The Word John 1:1 Q 18: Will God allow our disobedience and idolatry to go unpunished? A 18: No, every sin is against the sovereignty of God, and against His righteous law, and God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them in His just judgment both in this life, and in the life to come. - God communicates with man. - Jesus is the Word, God s greatest communication with man. - Jesus is fully God. - God is unchanging. 1/28/18 Lamb of God, Savior, Messiah I Peter 3:18 Q 19: Is there a way to escape punishment and be brought back into God s favor? A 19: Yes, to satisfy His justice, God Himself, out of mere mercy, reconciles us to Himself and delivers us from sin and from the punishment for sin, by a Redeemer. - The shedding of blood is the only acceptable payment for sin. - Jesus, the sinless Lamb provided by God, paid the price for man s sin. - Jesus payment is permanent because He is a living Savior. 2/4/18 High Priest, Mediator I Timothy 2:5 Q 20: Who is the Redeemer? A 20: The only Redeemer is the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, in whom God became man and bore the penalty for sin Himself. - Jesus is the Perfect High Priest who sacrificed His own blood for the payment of the sins of men once and for all. - Jesus is a living High Priest, so His redemtion is eternal. - Through the sacrifice of Jesus, believers can come boldly to the throne of God where Jesus intercedes for us. 2/11/18 Cornerstone 1 Peter 2:6 Q 21: What sort of Redeemer is needed to bring us back to God? A 21: One who is truly human and also truly God. - Jesus is a precious, chosen cornerstone to those who believe. - Jesus is a stumbling stone to those who reject Him. 2/18/18 Overcomer 1 John 5:5 Q 22: Why must the Redeemer be truly human? A 22: That in human nature He might on our behalf perfectly obey the whole law and suffer the punishment for human sin; and also that He might sympathize with our weaknesses. - Jesus will return with great power to punish Satan eternally and destroy evil. - Those who are trusting in Jesus need not fear the return of Jesus. - Every day, Jesus overcomes evil with determined, relentless victories, and is helping His children to overcome sin in their lives. 2/25/18 Coming King Philippians 2:10-11 Q 23: Why must the Redeemer be truly God? A 23: That because of His divine nature His obedience and suffering would be perfect and effective; and also that He would be able to bear the righteous anger of God against sin and yet overcome death. - Jesus humbled Himself to come as a servant leader, but He will be exalted as the Coming King. - Someday everyone will bow under the authority of Jesus. - We are to follow Jesus example and humble ourselves. 3/4/18 Judge Of The Whole Earth Romans 8:1 Q 24: Why was it necessary for Christ, the Redeemer, to die? A 24: Since death is the punishment for sin, Christ died willingly in our place to deliver us from the power and penalty of sin and bring us back to God. By His substitionary atoning death, He alone redeems us from hell and gains for us forgiveness of sin, righteousness, and everlasting life. - God is a just judge, and He will eternally punish those who do not trust in Him. - There is no condemnation for those who trust in Jesus. - Believers will be rewarded for their true good deeds. 3/11/18 Alpha and Omega Revelation 22:13 Q 25: Does Christ s death mean all our sins can be forgiven? A 25: Yes, because Christ s death on the cross fully paid the penalty for our sin, God graciously imputes Christ s righteousness to us as if it were our own and will remember our sins no more. - God is total and complete. God is all. - God is the beginning and the end of all things; He created the world and will bring earthly history to an end. - God had no beginning and will have no end - He is eternal. - God and God alone is worthy of our worship.

DATE LESSON MEMORY VERSE CATECHISM QUESTION 3/18/18 Unknown Name Jeremiah 29:13 Q 26: What else does Christ s death redeem? A 26: Christ s death is the beginning of the redemption and renewal of every part of fallen creation, as He powerfully directs all things for His own glory and creation s good. - God is incomprehensible; His completeness is so vast that we cannot completely know Him. - Knowing about God is not the same as knowing God; to know God requires a personal relationship with Him. - To know God we must seek Him. 3/25/18 El Kana, A Jealous God Matthew 6:24 Q 27: Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ? A 27: No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless God in His mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining the effects of sin and enabling works of culture for human well-being. - God is a jealous God; He requires our loyal devotion. - God will not allow another to take His place. - Idols can be taken into the heart. Anything we treasure more than we treasure God is an idol. 4/1/18 4/8/18 Counselor, Helper John 14:16 Q 28: What happens after death to those not united to Christ by faith? A 28: At the day of judgment they will receive the fearful but just sentence of condemnation pronounced against them. They will be cast out from the favorable presence of God, into hell, to be justly and greviously punished, forever. - Man is spiritually blind and unable to understand or embrace spiritual truth apart from the work of the Holy Spirit. - The Holy Spirit is the Helper who convicts of sin, brings spiritual understanding, bears witness to Jesus, softens hearts, creates new life in Christ, and produces the character of Christ in the believer. 4/15/18 Salvation in No Other Name Acts 4:12 Q 29: How can we be saved? A 29: Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross; so even though we are guilty of having disobeyed God and are still inclined to all evil, nevertheless, God, without any merit of our own but only by pure grace, imputes to us the perfect righteousness of Christ when we repent and believe in Him. - Man s sin separates him from the Holy God and makes him deserving of God s wrath. - Trusting in the work of Jesus on the cross as a payment for our sin is the only means of salvation. - God accepts anyone who calls on His name, who is trusting in Him. 4/22/18 Response to the Name Psalm 34:8 Q 30: What is faith in Jesus Christ? A 30: Faith in Jesus Christ is acknowledging the truth of everything that God has revealed in His Word, trusting in Him, and receiving and resting on Him alone for salvation as He is offered to us in the gospel. - Everyone responds to the name of God, either positively or negatively. - Though a positive response is only possible through grace, we are challenged to discover for ourselves that God is good. - Every Christian is called to praise and proclaim the name of God. 4/29/18 Honoring God s Name Exodus 20:7 Q 31: What do we believe by true faith? A 31: Everything taught to us in the gospel. The Apostles Creed expresses what we believe in these words: We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. - A good reputation is precious; it is sinful to harm another person s reputation through slander. - It is a serious offense to dishonor God s name, and the offender will be judged for his sin. - We are to strive to bring honor to God s name through our words, actions, and attitudes.

DATE LESSON MEMORY VERSE CATECHISM QUESTION 5/6/18 Worthy to Suffer for the Name 5/13/18 Trusting in God s Name James 1:2-3 Psalm 9:10 Q 32: What do justification and sanctification mean? A 32: Justification means our declared rigtheousness before God, made possible by Christ s death and resurrection for us. Sanctification means our gradual, growing righteousness, made possible by the Spirit s work in us. Q 33: Should those who have faith in Christ seek their salvation through their own works, or anywhere else? A 33: No, they should not, everything necessary to salvation is found in Christ. To seek salvation through good works is a denial that Christ is the only Redeemer and Savior. - Our desire should be to make Jesus known, to exalt Jesus rather than ourselves. - It is a cause for rejoicing when we are counted worthy to suffer for the name of Christ. - The way to endure suffering with joy is to abide in Jesus. - God will protect His name and reputation. - God will be faithful to His name. - Christians can be assured that God will not forsake His children for His name s sake. 5/20/18 End-of-Year Party End-of-Year Party Q 34: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God s Word? A 34: Yes, because Christ, having redeemed us by His blood, also renews us by His Spirit; so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; so that we may be assured of our faith by the fruits; and so that by our godly behavior others may be won to Christ. sin. End-of-Year Party
