Lenten Reminders The following information may be helpful in preparation for Lent. ABSTINENCE Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the FRIDAYS of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY. FAST Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASHWEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY. On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. Saints and Sacraments in the Year of Faith Series Two Pope Benedict XVI declared that a "Year of Faith" will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on November 24, 2013. October 11, 2012, the first day of the Year of Faith, is the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. (Vatican II) and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith. In conjunction with the Year of Faith, the Cathedral will host a lecture series called Saints and Sacraments in the Year of Faith led by Stephen Cordova. The free lectures will be on Sundays after the 11:00 a.m. Masses in Msgr. Bowe Room. Series Two: The Saints & Sacraments in the Year of Faith Schedule and Topics: February 24: St. Polycarp: a Witness of God's Love March 3: Saints Perpetua and Felicity: Witnesses and Visionaries March 17: St. Augustine: The Restless heart Finds Rest. 7
8 Memorial Service for Victims of Abortion San Francisco's 26th Annual Memorial Service for Victims of Abortion has a new date and sharpened focus. On Thurdsay evening, March 7, 2013 at 7:30pm, there will be an ecumenical service of prayer, Scripture, reflections, and an offering of roses.
