TABLE OF CONTENTS 4 5 8 9-33 34 DR. HAYNES LETTER GETTING STARTED GAAP & PRAYER INFORMATION 2018 FAITH & PUBLIC LIFE CALENDAR #KING50 READING RESOURCES Behind Martin Luther King Jr., a Public and Private Prayer Life Dr. King s personal devotional life was very, very important in giving him the courage and the determination to fight for justice, said Baldwin, who teaches at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. King would take personal prayer retreats and shut himself in a hotel room or pastor s study to pray, meditate and plan his next sermon or civil rights activities. But public prayer was important to him also because he understood prayer in that context as a form of creative energy, Baldwin said. It was a way of motivating, affirming, reaffirming, empowering people in the context of the struggle for equal rights. He writes that prayer was King s secret weapon in the civil rights movement, a key to its success as people found the strength to continue despite arrests and killings. Our Visionary Leader 4 #KING50 Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes, III Senior Pastor Dear Friendship West Family, I am excited with expectation to extend to you a personal invitation to an empowering encounter and a creative connection that can change your life and the world around you. This prayer journal is a wonderful vehicle that will assist in transporting you on a meaningful journey with Jesus to personal transformation through inspired intimacy as you commune with God, our Divine Parent, the Creator and Sustainer of life. Yes, you have a special and sacred invitation to join with us on a path to praying with power! Come with us and rediscover how prayer changes things, yes, and how prayer changes people who are empowered to change things. If indeed prayer moves the Hand that moves the world I m anticipating a mighty, even miraculous move of God in your life and in our world. Let us pray. I am praying that this journal will help you to communicate and cultivate your personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. Prayer facilitates making affectionate contact with our Cosmic Companion. May you be lifted spiritually to have a little talk with Jesus knowing that God (Who is Love) has lovingly provided this wonderful opportunity, through prayer, for us to experience God s Divine Presence so that we can know the Liberating Lord Christ for ourselves. Relationships that are healthy grow through experiences and intentional communication. I am praying that through this prayer journal you will chronicle your experiences with the Lord of life and discern the Providential movement and Hand of God in your life while speaking with God who has a plan for your life. Further, I energetically invite you to a spiritual adventure where you will be empowered to live life from the inside out. Dr. Howard Thurman said we are to live our outer lives from our inner sanctuary. Prayer fuels our spiritual formation and transformation. When we connect with Jesus on the main line we are equipped with superior interior resources to handle the exterior forces that would oppress, overwhelm, seduce and sabotage our lives. Prayer equips us to confront and conquer enemies within so we are ready for the challenges in front of us and around us.

Through prayer we are invited to plug into the Supreme Power Source. Cell phones that are powered up owe their ability to perform and function to a source beyond the phone that connects to what s inside the phone. As we keep in touch with the Lord we hook up with the Personal Power Source beyond us Who empowers us to live our personal faith in public. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker shared with me a glimpse into the personal life of Dr. King that is printed in the insightful book Never to Leave Us Alone by Lewis Baldwin. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would disconnect from the world in order to reconnect with God. Dr. King, periodically and strategically, employed a selfimposed Day of Silence in which he abstained from the distractions of life, by turning off the television, telephone and radio in order to turn on and tune in to a Higher Frequency through prayer, contemplation and meditation. Dr. King had a private empowering encounter with the Eternal God that was manifest in his public life. This year, 2018, we will commemorate and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. King. As people of faith we will be challenged to pick up the baton of the drum major for justice and exercise our faith in public. However, we are reminded by Dr King that we must experience God in private so we will be empowered by God in public. Let us pray! Peace and Power, Frederick Douglass Haynes, III #KING50 5

GETTING STARTED ing brings us into a deeper, more intimate and powerful relationship with The Lord. It is to be done as an act before God in the privacy of one s own pursuit of God. ing is to be done with the object of seeking to know God in a deeper experience. When we eliminate food from our diet for a number of days, our spirit becomes uncluttered by the things of this world and amazingly sensitive to the things of God. Prayer can include confession, praise, admiration/adoration, supplication, intercession and more. Prayer is a relationship, where we humbly communicate, worship, and honestly seek God s face, knowing that He hears us, loves us and will answer us. God may not always respond the way we expect or desire. Also, our approach in prayer is important. Our prayers must come often and regularly, not from repetitive duty, but from an unpretentious heart, understanding our dependency on God in every aspect of our lives. Caution: If you are on prescription medication by order of a physician, please seek the advice of your healthcare provider before starting the fast. Listed below are some key factors to remember while we our fasting. Remember to: Pray and stay in God s Word. Drink lots of water. Hold onto your focus and escape temptation. Focus on your fast and its purpose. God will give you grace to prosper/succeed. Play praise and worship music as often as you can. Conserve your energy. Create a place and time for God. Ponder on prolonged meditation and listening. Reframe from idle conversations and social media. Eat a light meal after 6 p.m. fruits, vegetables, chicken or fish. Exclude sweets and caffeine drinks during the fasting period. Start over if you break your fast. 6 #KING50

Physical and spiritual effects: Hunger pangs may increase and cravings for food, sugar and caffeine. Wisdom begins to intensify. Increased awareness of the Lord s presence. Benefits of a chosen fast: Isaiah 58:6-7 (NRSV) To loose the bonds of injustice. To undo heavy burdens. To break the yolk and let the oppressed go free. To share our bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into our house. To show compassion and mercy to those who are naked and rendered invisible. Why we should pray: God calls us to pray. Jesus prayed regularly. Prayer is how we communicate with God. Prayer compels us to partner with God in doing Kingdom work on earth. Prayer gives us authority over evil. Prayer keeps us humble. Prayer gives us the ability to experience God. Strengthens our connection with God and each other. Prayer soothes our doubts and calms our fears. Prayer is for our benefit. Should you pray for your enemy? Yes - Matthew 5:43-44 What can hinder our prayer life? Sometimes we don t pray in faith. Sometimes we pray with the wrong motives and unforgiveness. Sometimes we pray out of habit and not conviction. #KING50 7

Things to know about prayer: Prayer is not magic. Prayer does not make ungodly demands. Prayer is not an opportunity to show off. Prayer does not prevent suffering. Prayer is not for God s benefit. Prayer does not manipulate God. 8 #KING50
