Oct.-Nov. 2017 At last, meditating day and night and by the mercy of God, I began to understand that the righteousness of God is that through which the righteous live by a gift of God, namely by faith. Here I felt as if I were entirely born again and had entered paradise itself through gates that had been flung open. Martin Luther PASTOR S DESK Reformation 500 A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Well, actually, 500 years ago in the Holy Roman Empire (now Germany), there lived a priest and professor named Martin Luther. Luther was a teacher of the Bible and a devout Christian, but he struggled with faith and doubt. He was tormented by the knowledge of his own sin and felt that the Devil was constantly attacking him. He confessed and confessed but knew deep down in his heart that he would never deserve God s love or mercy. Which, of course, made him miserable. And then one day, he heard in a new way Paul s words in Romans 1.17: For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, The one who is righteous will live by faith. This broke open the world for him. It freed him from his misery, from himself. Our righteousness in the eyes of God is not by our own doing, but is pure gift of God. The righteousness of Christ is conferred to us through faith, which is itself a gift. That is, we are not deserving of God s love except that God declares that we are. We do not make ourselves loveable, but because of who God is, we are loved. Those words from Romans 1.17 ignited a fire in Luther and set him on a path that would reshape the church and the world. Instead of living in constant fear, Luther was transformed by the power of God s grace and he proclaimed the power of that transformation throughout his life. He wanted the whole world to know the love of God which he had come to know. This October, we are commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, officially begun on October 31, 1517 with the publishing of Martin Luther s 95 Theses. Traditionally, we celebrate the reformation on that Sunday nearest the 31st of October, this year October 29th. In celebration of the 500th anniversary, we will commemorate the day with a specially designed worship service featuring readings from Martin Luther s works and hymns of reformation old and new. Our celebration will then continue with a German-themed potluck following worship. Bring your best German (or German-ish) dishes to share. Later that afternoon, we will join together with Grace, Calvary and Hope for a special screening of Luther (2013 film) at the Paradise Theater in Mora. It is a significant anniversary in history and a particularly exciting one for us Lutherans. I hope you will be able to join in the celebration. Blessings to you in this season of Reformation, as we continue to be transformed by God s grace. In Christ, Pastor Sierra 1

Children and Youth 2017-2018 Sunday School Children of all ages are welcome at Immanuel! Ages Kindergarten through 6th grade are invited to participate in Sunday School. Sunday School occurs during worship (Sundays at 9:00am) from September through May. Children gather with their families in the sanctuary for the beginning of worship and are dismissed to Sunday school after the Children s Message with Pastor Sierra. They rejoin their families for a blessing during Holy Communion. This year, our students are using the Spark: Activate Faith curriculum following the lectionary. We are excited to offer Sunday School opportunities for our kids to hear the same scripture texts that their families are hearing in worship, only with the chance to get up and move around and engage with those stories on their own level. It is our hope that having heard the same readings, children and parents will have the opportunity to talk together about what they learned on Sunday morning. Youth Scoop I hope everyone had a great summer, the Youth Task Force of Immanuel took the summer off from planning activities and is now ready to jump back in. Some activities we are planning...
