OH, COME, LET US SING TO THE LORD Venite 4

THE WORD FIRST LESSON Exodus 20:1-17 20 And God spoke all these words: 2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods before me. 4 You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 You shall not covet your neighbor s house. You shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. 5

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 69 The verses will be spoken as directed below. Pastor: Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. All: Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. Pastor: May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O LORD Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel. All: For zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. Pastor: Answer me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. Refrain (Sung by all) Pastor: They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. All: The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. Pastor: Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, All: for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. 6

Pastor: I will praise God s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain (Sung by all) SECOND LESSON Romans 8:1-10 8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. SEASONAL RESPONSE P: All we like sheep have gone astray, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. By his wounds we are healed. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function 7

GOSPEL John 2:13-22 13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father s house into a market! 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me. 18 The Jews then responded to him, What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this? 19 Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days. 20 They replied, It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days? 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. HYMN OF THE DAY Your Works, Not Mine, O Christ 401 SERMON Exodus 20:1-17 The Law of the Lord Brings Order to Your Life HYMN RESPONSE Drawn to the Cross 387 v. 1-2 THANK OFFERING Please take a moment during the gathering of the thank offering to sign the FRIENDSHIP REGISTER and get to know those seated around you. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie 8

LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. HYMN Drawn to the Cross 387 v. 3-4 PRAYERS P: Almighty God, look with favor on your humble servants and stretch out the right hand of your power to defend us against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. P: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. 9
