September 20, 2015 Page Three GOD'S WORD TODAY Today's Gospel presents us with a scene that is echoed time and time again in our society. From an early age, most of us have been encouraged to be first--first in line, first in the class, first to be picked for the team. This encouragement continues throughout our lives. Being first is fundamentally about power. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being first. The problems set in when we use the power of being first to manipulate and use the people we consider somehow "beneath" us. So many problems of our world and church revolve around this kind of abuse of power. Let us pray that today's Gospel, which addresses these issues head on, will inspire all to use their power in ways that build up rather than tear down and destroy. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- The wicked say: With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test (Wisdom 2:12, 17-20). Psalm -- The Lord upholds my life (Psalm 54). Second Reading -- The wisdom from above is full of mercy and good fruits (James 3:16 -- 4:3). Gospel -- Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me (Mark 9:30-37). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13; Psalm 19:2-5; Matthew 9:9-13 Tuesday: Ezra 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20; Psalm 122:1-5; Luke 8:19-21 Wednesday: Ezra 9:5-9; Tobit:13:2, 3-4, 7-8; Luke 9:1-6 Thursday: Haggai 1:1-8; Psalm 149:1b-6a, 9b; Luke 9:7-9 Friday: Haggai 2:1-9; Psalm 43:1-4; Luke 9:18-22 Saturday: Zechariah 2:5-9, 14-15a; Jeremiah 31:10-13; Luke 9:43b-45 Sunday: Numbers 11:25-29; Psalm 19:8, 10, 12-14; James 5:1-6; Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 Reflecting on God s Word The disciples may have been a bit slow to understand how Jesus was re-defining the Messiah he was going to be, but they were not stupid on all accounts. They picked up on the reaction Peter got when he rebuked Jesus for talking about suffering rejection and death. So, when Jesus brought up the subject for a second time in today s Gospel, they just listened politely, then dropped back out of earshot and changed the subject to a more pleasant one themselves, and who was the greatest. Things must have gotten quite animated because when they got home, Jesus asked about it. Their silence surely disappointed him, since he could surmise what had engaged them. But like a good teacher, he tries another way to make his point. There must have been a child nearby, because he calls her over and places his arms protectively around her, and says to them, If you want to be first, then be last. If you want to be in charge, then serve. When you take in the least, you take in not only me but my Father. Class dismissed. It has proved a hard lesson to learn. Or maybe few of us really want to learn it. When you look out at the world, most seem to want to be first, the greatest, the one with the most and best toys, a wielder of power and influence and authority. Choosing to serve the least doesn t make the top ten on most people s to do list. Living God s Word Lord, help us to follow your call by serving the little ones, especially those more likely to be subject to the cruelty and indifference of the world. Sustain us in this work with the assurance that when we receive them, we receive not only you but the One who sent you. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

September 20, 2015 SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School WE WILL NEVER FORGET On Friday, September 11, members of the South Holland Police and Fire Department along with one of our school parents, Police Chief Cook, of the Glenwood Police Department, joined us at our Patriot Day Prayer Service as we commemorated the 14th anniversary of 9/11. Our seventh grade class, along with their teacher, Mrs. Rhonda Szczepanski, prepared and lead us in a very moving and prayful service. We extend our deepest gratitude to all of the first responders of local area departments who protect us and risk their lives for us each and every day. TRAIN YOUR BRAIN Did you know that Christ Our Savior has a Chess Club sponsored by the Bright Knights Chess organization? Playing chess can improve and enhance a student s academic performance. It assists in concentration, memory retention, critical thinking, problem solving, pattern recognition, creativity, logical thinking and analysis. Our Chess Club is open to students in Grades K- 8. Students meet after school every Wednesday with Program Director, Cook Williams. Coach Cook and his sons teach chess in several south suburban Catholic schools. We are looking forward to student competitions among other schools this year and at the state level. KLEINHENN FUNDRAISER Our first fundraiser of the year is the Kleinhenn candy and gift wrap sale. This fundraiser hosts a variety of items such as wrapping paper, candy, magazines and many other excellent products. This is a great way to get your Christmas shopping completed early. If you are interested in a catalog, please contact the school office at 708-333-8173 and we will be happy to provide you with the opportunity to purchase some of these items. As always, we appreciate your support of Christ Our Savior Catholic School. SEEKING - CRAFTERS AND VENDORS for the annual Christ Our Savior Catholic School Craft Fair and Vendor Show.
