How did you react to the death of a loved one? What comforted you during this difficult me? 2. Why does the gospel writer tell us about where and how the burial shroud and head covering were laid? How does this speak about the resurrecon? 3. What is your proof that Jesus rose from the dead? How does the Resurrecon of Jesus reassure you about life a&er death? All are welcome! Dear Friends, Happy Easter everyone! A li-le trivia queson for you: In the gospel of St. John, what is the first thing Jesus ever says? (You can pause here and think about it for a moment before I give you the answer.) His first words were these: What are you looking for? He spoke these words to two men who were disciples of John the Bap st. They had just heard John say that Jesus was the Lamb of God and so they began to follow him. As they followed, Jesus turned to them and asked the queson, What are you looking for It is a great queson for all of us. What exactly in life are we looking for? It s a simple queson and yet it is so hard to answer. We look for a lot of things in life. I think most of us look for direcon. We want to know which way our life should go. We hope that by the end of our life we can look back and see that our life had some meaning, that it had some purpose. In the movie, City Slickers out many years ago, Billy Crystal plays a man (Mitch Robbins) living in Manha-an who turns 40 and thinks his life has no meaning. So he and his friends decide to go to a ranch out west where they join in a ca-le drive. There he meets Curly (Jack Palance), their leader. Curly is both a crazy, frightening figure and wisdom figure at the same me. At one point Curly says to Mitch, There is one thing that s important in life one thing. And as the queson hangs in the air, Mitch asks the obvious queson, What is it? and Curly says, That s what you need to find out. Mitch is searching for something true in his life. He is searching for something good and beauful, something real and true. I think we search for the same things. Finally, I think most of us in life look for love. We look for someone to share life with a husband, a wife, a partner, a best friend. We don t want to be alone and so we look for relaonship, we look for love. For those of us with faith this should not come as a surprise. God told us in Genesis, It is not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18) So what exactly are you looking for? Let me share with you another interesng piece of trivia: the first thing Jesus says a&er the resurrecon. On that first Easter morning, a couple of women come to the tomb but it is empty. They see someone but they don t recognize him as Jesus, and he says to them, Why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for? The first words he says as he begins his public ministry is what are you looking for the first words a&er the resurrecon is whom are you looking for. My friends, on this Easter Sunday, if you are looking for direcon (searching for your way) if you are searching for your one thing (searching for truth) and if you are searching for love (which is life), might I invite you to connue your search here, among us, at St. John Paul II Parish. Here at St. JPII, we are a community of disciples (students of Jesus) searching for the same thing. We are not a perfect parish made up of perfect people. We are a group of wounded, flawed, incomplete people trying to find our way through life. And we believe that way is through Jesus who is the way, the truth and the life. If you are perfect and have all the answers, you might want to join someplace else. But if you are like us, people with quesons trying to find our way, perhaps the walk will be easier if we do it together. Once again, Happy Easter; and if I can do anything to walk with you on this journey we call life, please don t hesitate to give me a call. In Christ s Love, Fr. Tom Clegg Pastor

St. John Paul II Parish Mission You Are Witnesses to These Things: Becoming People of Purpose Sunday Night, April 15, 2018 6:30 p.m. Wake up! The Risk of Missing the Point. Our mission presenter, David Wells, was born in Market Harborough, England. He was educated at St. Joseph s primary school there and then at English Martyrs in Leicester. He has spoken extensively in England, the U.S. and Canada. He has published two books, The Reluctant Disciple and The Grateful Disciple, both available from Redemptorist Publica'ons. Bishop Malcolm McMahon, Chair of the Department for Educa'on and Forma'on in the Bishop s Conference, described David as a Remarkable and giged speaker. David is married to Alison and they have three grown children and a very badly behaved dog. David s eldest son Sam, has just begun a teaching career in mathema'cs. David now lives in Exmouth, East Devon. Pope Francis challenges us to reconsider if we have become listless and weary. Is it possible that we make ourselves so busy that we forget what truly ma@ers? In this presenta'on David will challenge us to re-think our lives, not to make us feel bad or guilty, but to enable us to rediscover what gives us life and energy. (Sacrament of Reconcilia'on will follow for those who would like to celebrate it.) Monday Night, April 16, 2018 6:30 p.m. Vietato Lamentarsi! Becoming Free and Cheerful Missionaries Pope Francis challenges us to be happy. In this session we will focus on the kind of people Jesus calls us to be. What difference would the great virtues make if we tried to prac'ce them? This session is less about what we should do and more about who we should be. Tuesday Night, April 17, 2018 6:30 p.m. Me? A Disciple? Give Me a Break. Much is spoken these days about missionary disciples. When Jesus calls us to be his witnesses what does he ask and can we respond regardless of our own weaknesses and doubts? Is it 'me to grow, to dare, to take a risk? April 15, 16, &17 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. St. Paul Campus 216 Schellers Ave. Sellersburg, IN Please note: No Religious Educa'on classes on April 15th so students and teachers can a@end the Mission. Babysi,ng will be available for younger children.
