FROM FATHER JOHN: Fatherhood is a vocation in God s service, not to be held lightly or frivolously, but with the serious determination of serious men. -- Fr. Lawrence Lovasik Next Sunday is Father s Day. It is my wish and prayer that every father in our parish has a wonderful Father s Day celebrating the gifts of faith, family and love that God has given to each father. It is always a wonderful day for me because I get to spend time with my dad and let him know how much I love him and how much he means to me. He has had a profound affect on my life and on my priesthood. I want to publicly thank him for all he has done for me throughout my life but, most specially, I want to thank him for passing our Catholic faith to me as I grew up. I truly believe that the most profound, wonderful and loving gift a father can give a child is faith in our Lord Jesus; faith that is practiced in and through the Catholic Church. Then-Bishop Sartain started a special Father s Day collection in 2010 and the parishes of the diocese have generously given to this collection each year since. This collection goes to the care and well-being of our elderly and infirm priests. This collection is different from the collection for the retired religious that is taken up every year. That collection supports retired priests, sisters and brothers who are members of a religious order. It does not support the elderly and infirm parish priests who can no longer minister to the people of the Diocese of Joliet. Bishop Conlon has graciously continued this collection in the hope that the people of the diocese would be willing to express their gratitude for the parish priests who have served them over the years by supporting this collection. I know that you have been well served by a parish priest at some point in your life; in times of joy, in times of sorrow and in normal, ordinary times. Next weekend, on Father s Day weekend, we will take up a second collection for the elderly and infirm priests of our diocese. I ask that you provide your generous support to these men (men like Fr. Lennon in age and temperament but who are suffering through major illnesses and debilitations) After all, Kindness to a father will not be forgotten; it will serve as a sin offering it will take lasting root. In time of trouble it will be recalled to your advantage, like warmth upon frost it will melt away your sins. (Sirach 3:14-15) I thank you for your generous support of our retired priests, both those who are retired now and those who will retire in years to come. I thought, as we approach Father s Day, that I would also give you an update on vocations to the priesthood in our diocese. This past May we ordained five men, including Fr. Shaun Cieslik, to the priesthood for the Diocese of Joliet. The following chart shows the number of men currently studying for the priesthood in our diocese and what year they will be, God willing, ordained to the priesthood. Year to be Ordained No. of Men to be Ordained 2017 3 2018 6 2019 4 2020 10 2021 8 2021 8 One thing to keep in mind when looking at these numbers is that the further away a class is from ordination the more likely that men will leave the seminary and search for their vocation outside of the priesthood. We have confidence that we will ordain three men next May but we need to be less confident of the number of ordinations in the later years. Overall, we can be fairly sure that we will ordain between 24 and 34 men to the priesthood over the next six years. This is tremendously good news for the people of our diocese! The growth that we are seeing in vocations to the priesthood is a grace and blessing that comes from God. It s important to keep in mind, however, that even with this type of growth we still have, and will continue to have, a shortage of priests in our diocese. We could very easily have more men retire from the priesthood in the next six years then the number of men who are ordained to the priesthood during those six years. This is true even with the growth in priestly vocations that we are seeing. The reason for this is that most of our priests are 60-years-old, or older, and are approaching retirement. So I ask you to continue to pray for priestly vocations and that we will be given an abundance of good and faithful priests here in the Diocese of Joliet.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 12 June 2016 Love and sin. These two seem an odd pairing, a doubtful duo. Yet love and sin are bound together in the Bible readings today. Great love leads to forgiveness. And forgiveness leads to greater love. Look to King David who had a husband killed so he could take the wife. Look to the Apostle Paul who was drawn away from persecuting others by the love of the Son. Look to the unnamed weeping woman who bathed and anointed feet. Because of sorrow. Because of forgiveness. Because of great love Who has forgiven me? What happened next? Who needs my forgiveness? And how does my forgiveness mirror God s forgiveness of me, of others, and of all? Father Clarence Rivers, a priest of Cincinnati, sings of this great love.
