The British Province of Carmelites Liturgical Ordo 2016

Statue of St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, sculpted by Michael Clark at the Great Courtyard of The Friars, Aylesford, Kent. Used by kind permission of the Prior & Community.

GENERAL NOTES The liturgical Ordo here presented is that recommended for the friar, lay Carmelite and other communities of the British Province of Carmelites serving England, Scotland and Wales. The following points should be noted: 1. For this Liturgical Year from Advent 2015 until Advent 2016 Sunday and Festive Lectionary: Weekday Lectionary: Year C Cycle II 2. Abbreviations CS Carmelite Supplement (1987) NCS New Carmelite Supplement (1993) EP1 Evening Prayer 1 (First Vespers) Mem Memorial 3. For the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as Divine Office: Numbers in this Ordo refer to the book of Morning and Evening Prayer printed by Collins. Page numbers to the Carmelite Supplements (also known as The Carmelite Proper of the Liturgy of the Hours) are those printed by the Institutum Carmelitanum in Rome (currently awaiting updating and reprint). For ease of compilation, page references for the three-volume Divine Office Breviary printed by Collins are no longer included in this Ordo. 4. On Ferias (ordinary days) and most Memorias, use the Psalter for the prescribed week in conjunction with the reference in the Morning and Evening Prayer book. For Feasts and Solemnities follow the indications given in the proper (the part towards the end of the books where the feast days are arranged by date). ALWAYS TAKE NOTE OF THESE REFERENCES FIRST. 5. Regarding Midday Prayer in the Divine Office... On Solemnities, the Antiphons and Psalms are as noted in the Proper. On Feasts the Hymn, Antiphons and Psalms are normally from the weekday Psalter, unless otherwise noted; the rest is from the Proper or Common. On Ferias and Memorias the whole of Midday Prayer, including the Prayer, is taken from the Feria, unless otherwise noted.

6. The Anniversaries given are those of deceased friar members of the Province, of the Blackburn Nuns, and of the founders and leaders of The Leaven Secular Institute, together with others, including some Tertiaries, who have made a significant contribution to the life of the Carmelite Family in Britain. Local Lay Carmelite communities may wish to include the anniversaries of deceased members in their prayer. When a Carmelite dies it is usual for the Office of the Dead (found at the back of most Office books) to be prayed for him/her. 7. On Ferias in Advent & Lent, Memorias are celebrated as follows, if desired: at Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, after the prayer, the conclusion is omitted and the Antiphon & Prayer of the Saint is said with its conclusion. 8. Italics indicate Carmelite Feasts and Anniversaries. For biographies of the Carmelite Saints and Blesseds, along with a commentary on the texts of their Offices, see Fr. Emanuele Boaga, O.Carm., Celebrating the Saints of Carmel, (Rome: Edizioni Carmelitane, 2010). Information on the Order s holy men and women can also be found on: www.carmelite.org 9. Celebrations which are particular to a specific diocese are not included in this Ordo but normally will be found in the local diocesan directory, yearbook, or website. Feasts of the National Calendars of England, Wales and Scotland are included where appropriate. 10. Where no other celebration takes precedence, it is the custom of the Carmelite Order (cf. 1995 Constitutions 87) to commemorate Saturdays in honour of Our Lady. For the Office the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Memoria of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday are printed in the various editions of the Office books. Solemnities of the Lord (such as the Epiphany, the Ascension and Corpus Christi) have been transferred to the appropriate Sunday, as per the decision of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales. These are shown in the Ordo, and Carmelites in Scotland may need to check the local liturgical calendar for such dates. Days of Prayer appointed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales have been included, as have the Days of Prayer and Action designated by the Carmelite NGO on 5 th June (World Environment Day) and 10 th December (World Human Rights Day), and the Provincial practice (since 2012) of marking the 16 th day of each month as a time of particular prayer for vocations. In keeping with the request of Pope John Paul II, and in solidarity with our enclosed sisters in Carmel, 21 st November is marked as Pro Orantibus Day (a Day of Prayer for Those who Pray).

NOTES FOR THE 2016 CARMELITE LITURGICAL ORDO The Holy See (including the Congregation for Divine Worship & The Discipline of the Sacraments) On 11 th April 2015 Pope Francis announced that an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy would be held from 8 th December 2015 to 20 th November 2016. Various resources for liturgy and reflection can be found online at www.im.va On 6 th August 2015 Pope Francis announced an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, beginning on 1 st September 2015. The Congregation issued a Homiletic Directory to support the ministry of preaching. In the last year the Holy See has issued no other notes of particular relevance for the celebration of the Divine Office. Further information about the Congregation can be found online: www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccdds/index_en.htm The Bishops Conference of England & Wales (including the Liturgy Office) The Spirituality Committee of the Bishops Conference Department for Christian Life and Worship has produced a series of resources suitable for meditation during the current Year of Mercy, which can be found via the website below. In 2015 the Bishops Conference announced its desire that the Revised Grail Psalter (2010) be used in future editions of the Liturgy of the Hours, and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible (2 nd Catholic Edition 2010) be used for the preparation of a new Lectionary. The bishops also asked that further work de done on the Proper Texts in the Liturgy of the Hours for the National Calendar of England. The Bishops Conference has made a number of changes to the Cycle of Prayer which are effective from 2016: Education Day to 2 nd Sunday in September Day for Life to the 3 rd Sunday in June. Racial Justice Day to 3 Sundays before the 1 st Sunday of Lent At Easter 2014 the Bishops Conference resolved to encourage the Catholic community to participate in local civic or ecumenical celebrations

commemorating all those who list their lives in the First World War; in 2016 this includes the Battle of the Somme on 1 st July. Further information regarding the liturgical calendar can be found on the website of The Liturgy Office of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales: www.liturgyoffice.org.uk The Bishops Conference of Scotland (including the Liturgy Commission) No notes of relevance to the Liturgical Calendar were issued in 2015. For further information visit: www.bcos.org.uk The Carmelite Family Worldwide (including the Curia of the Carmelite Order and office of the Postulator General) On 17 th May 2015 the Holy Father canonised Saint Mariam Baouardy of Jesus Crucified, O.C.D. On 21 st December 2015 the PriorGeneral of the Carmelite Order announced (Prot. 243/2015) that a special year marking the 450 th anniversary of the birth of St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi would open on 2 nd April 2016 (the anniversary of her birth) and close on 25 th May 2017 (her feast day). Resources on this holy woman of our family can be found online at www.carmelite.org/mmp450 The Carmelite Family in Britain On 23 rd May 2015 Archbishop Óscar Romero was beatified, to the delight of many Carmelites in Britain who have prayed and worked for the cause of this member of the Brown Scapular Confraternity. His feast day is 24 th March. From the Editor Further copies of this Ordo can be obtained from the Distribution Office of Saint Albert s Press in Faversham. It is also available as a PDF file on the Province website: www.carmelite.org/prayer I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Fr. Gerard Walsh, O.Carm., for his kind assistance once again in compiling the Liturgical Ordo. Johan Bergström-Allen, T.O.C. THE CARMELITE CALENDAR Carmelite Solemnities, Feasts and Memorias are listed in the Ordo below (except when higher ranking observances preclude them this year). It is not the tradition in the communities of the British Province to observe Optional Memorias, except for that of St. Simon Stock because it is observed here as a Feast. They are, however, memorials which are proper to the Carmelite Order, so for those who wish to commemorate them they are included in brackets within the Ordo when other celebrations do not preclude them.
