Trusting Our Sovereign God Exodus 34:6 What are we to trust in these hard times? Terror Minneapolis police officer shot on Saturday Fear- New virus in Kansas -ticks Chaos of Ukraine and Russia Wicked practices of ISIS Maybe it is not the what we trust but the who we trust? When it comes to problems we love to blame others. Who do we blame? Government, our own ability, social and economic background, family, devil made me do it Everyone wants to change the world but no one wants to change themselves. The plague/ pestilence is sin, man s wicked heart, it is another wicked generation. More importantly is the who we are to trust in these hard times. Sadly at times we try to answer, leaving God out of the picture. Why 9/11? Why cancer? Most problems in life are based on an incorrect view of God. Too many times we look at things from our point of view and not God s. What is your view of God? Everything about your life is influenced by your view and your understanding of God. Your decisions reflect your beliefs about God. Wrong: I am in charge, pride, what is best for me, self is the measure of all things. Right: God, You are in control, what is best to bring fame to Your name. Your behaviors reflect how you view God. Wrong: I follow my own ethical principles and not believe what I am told. Right: I follow the sufficiency of the Bible to provide principles that govern life How you view God changes the way you respond to calamity. Wrong: despair and hopeless, grief without belief Right: God, You are still in control How you view God changes the way you live and relate to people. Wrong: marriage you complete me fulfill me serve me we are 50/50 Right: I am complete in Christ first, I am to serve care we are now one thus 100% Nothing in life could be more important than knowing God accurately. Bill Bright What do people mean when they say God? This is often different compared to what God shares of Himself in the Word which is the correct understanding of God. You need to know who God is, and that He is in control. Much of our trust and worship is based upon the knowledge of the greatness of God. Knowing that God is Sovereign is the great hope and relief as we live in this fallen world. Exodus 34:6 We are looking at how God has revealed Himself to His people in 13 words. As we saw last week the first two words are His personal name. LORD When they hear, say or use the name Yahweh it means my savior, deliverer. This is His personal name. He is the great I Am. I AM what you need. Do not address me as a heavenly official but by my personal name Yahweh YHWH

The third word in the Hebrew is God El Dictionary definition: A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient and ruler of the universe, the principle object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions. As there is some truth to this definition, the Bible does not give us a stale description of God. So what is He like? Is He just a cosmic being? One of the main characteristics of God in Bible is: He is a God of sovereign power and majesty. Why the focus on God is sovereign? When I look at the history of Christianity we can see different themes that were very important to defend at different times. First few centuries focus on who Jesus was and clarification of the Godhead Reformation Justification by faith and grace alone What is important today? The Doctrine of God and His Sovereignty. Let s begin by assessing where you are in this. Do you agree with a statement like this? I believe that every particle of dust that dances in the sunbeam does not move an atom more or less than God wishes that every particle of spray that dashes against the steamboat has its orbit as well as the sun in the heavens that the chaff from the hand of the winnower is steered as the stars in their courses. The creeping of an aphid over the rosebud is as much fixed as the march of the devastating pestilence the fall of leaves from a poplar is as fully ordained as the tumbling of an avalanche. Spurgeon Is God in control of every single molecule in the universe? Do you agree with this? The answer does not determine if you are a Christian or a Muslim, A conservative or liberal, Calvinist or an Armenian, or any flavor of theology you want. Your answer states if you are a theist or an atheist. Your answer determines if you believe in God or not. He that believes in a God must believe this truth. There is no standing-point between this and atheism. There is no half way between a mighty God that worketh all things by the sovereign counsel of His will and no god at all. A god that cannot do as he pleases, a God whose will is frustrated, is not a God, and cannot be a god. Spurgeon The biblical understanding of God is that He is Sovereign, in total control and providentially upholds all things, and works out all things to accomplish His purposes. He is all powerful, sovereign omnipotence Lord of the universe, ruler, has kingship and sovereignty over all things; God. Let us look at some biblical passages that can help us see God as how He presents Himself

Good King Deut 32:4,39 He is the Rock, zhis works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. Ps 115:2-3 Why do the nations say, Where is their God? Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him. Controls Kingdoms Proverbs 21:1 In the LORD s hand the king s heart is a stream of water that He channels toward all who please Him. Acts 17:26 From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. Rev 19:6 our Lord God Almighty reigns II Sam 7 Oh Sovereign Lord 289x Dan 2:20-21 wisdom and power are His. 21 He changes times and seasons; He deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. Controls weather God s exercise of power over His creation Mk 4:39 He got up, rebuked the wind the wind died down and it was completely calm. All things are controlled by God Prov 16:4 The LORD works out everything to its proper end even the wicked for a day of disaster. Prov 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD. Is 46:10 My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. Eph 1:11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, God is Sovereign, total control and providentially works out all things to accomplish His purposes. Rom 8:28-29 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who, have been called according to His purpose. For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son. Now let s move from truth statements and apply them to our lives. Because we can know that God is sovereign, we can trust that His love for His children never changes and nothing happens without His direction or permission. He can help us in our time of need. This sounds good until pain hits our life Because there are many days when we have two things in our hands. The reality of God, He is good and is going to work in my life. The reality of this horrible day, pain and death. And for some of you there is a disconnect because we have so many real problems and events.

How do we face difficulties and trials? Because this world is like a dissemble puzzle in a box. We can shake it all we want but you will not get the pieces to fit together. Most things are out of our control. That is the way God has planned it. This comes to a main question: Is God sovereign in suffering? ISIS God is sovereign in the worst of all evils and the suffering and the death of His own Son. Acts 2:22-23 This man was handed over to you by God s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. Acts 4:24-28 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Jesus was rejected, humiliated, abandoned, mocked, pierced and killed. These happened according to God s plan. The worst death, evil, was the death of Jesus showing us that God is sovereign in suffering. Answer: That we may be patient in adversity; thankful in prosperity; and that in all things, which may hereafter befall us, we place our firm trust in our faithful God and Father, that nothing shall separate us from His love; since all creatures are so in His hand, that without His will they cannot so much as move. God invites us to know His sovereignty through Christ. Only in a personal relationship with Jesus can God be fully known. God is able to overcome all problems we face Sometimes compounded with a name of place God of Connected to an adjective Great God most high El Shaddai God almighty Christ s focus is that God s justice would be accomplished in His punishment bringing redemption

Eph 3 For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom His whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, Acts 4:23-29 23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. Sovereign Lord, they said, you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one. 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. They called out in a loud voice, How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until You judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood? rev 6:10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
