page 7 FROM OUR SM FAITH FORMATION OFFICE MANAGER ELAINE KINDLER EASIER SAID THAN DONE! Jesus wants us to not be afraid. I understand. He s the Son of God. He can do anything, and through Him, we can do anything! So what s left that would cause us to be afraid? It s easier said than done. Like Peter, I take my eyes off of Jesus to look at the raging water surrounding me. Because of the frailties of human nature, and the incessant onslaught of the enemy s lies, I find myself afraid, or at least worried, more often than I would like to admit. (I m not talking here of natural instincts to protect myself, e.g., common sense things to be safe, like not walking alone at night on dark streets, locking my house and car, watching my valuables in public, etc.) Paul s letter to the Romans reminds me (Chapter 8 is loaded): If God is for us, who can be against us? (v 31) What will separate us from the love of Christ? (v 35) If we are in the love of Christ, truly in his life and he in ours, there can be nothing which causes us fear. And yet, I find myself, if not fearful, at least fretting over what will happen tomorrow or next week or next month, when will everything get done, etc. Now that I think about it, I expend way too much energy worrying about things over which I have no control. It s usually the small stuff. On the bigger life issues, thankfully my faith seems to kick in right away and I remember Paul s exhortation: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (v 38-39) This is truth. It s why Jesus can say be not afraid and know that we can live without fear. Please pray that I will remember this more often, and I ll pray for you. If we help each other, maybe it will be easier for all of us. Peter saw Jesus walking on the water and began to walk toward him. He became frightened at how strong the wind was and began to sink. He took his focus off of Jesus and allowed his fears to get the best of him. Fear often gets the best of us and cripples us. We sink. Many of our actions and thoughts are motivated by fear. Think of how many opportunities you have missed because of fear. Jesus tells us to trust and to meet each day with faith and confidence. God is with us. We have nothing to fear. August 13th, 2017: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Desk of our Parochial Vicar Fr. Tom a tiny whispering sound It is I do not be afraid The Vows of Matrimony Two are better than one: They get a good wage for their toil. If the one falls, the other will help the fallen one. Where one alone may be overcome, two together can resist. A three-ply cord is not easily broken. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, LET US KEEP IN PRAYER... The Knights of Columbus Scholarship recognition is given annually to a worthy graduating senior who has been a clear example of faith and service to our Parish and others in our community. Congratulations to Peter Cassels, the recipient of this year s award! Peter has served St. John s over the years as an Altar Server from 2nd through 10th grade, at which point he became a Lector at our weekend Masses. He participated in our Faith Formation Program from First Communion through Confirmation. He was an active member of our Youth Group and has worked in the summer Catholic Heart Work Camp Summer Mission Trips. Peter has also served the wider community through his Boy Scout activities, and has earned the prestigious Honor of Eagle Scout. Congratulations and Good Luck to Peter as he moves on to studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. You will find her in the chapel in the New Parish Center. Thank you to ALL for your patience with us, as we worked toward placing her in just the right location! Zack Carbonneau, July Fourth Raffle Winner ` one of our young parishioners, was the winner of 4 Lowell Spinners Tickets at our July 4th raffle. Looks like he had a GREAT time with friends! Thanks, Zack, for sharing your experience with us! 24 teens and 8 adults spent a Catholic Heart Work Camp week working with various agencies in the Allentown, PA area, bringing the light of Christ in the form of service work with a smile :). At the end of a long work day, all were enriched and energized by participation in activities centered around our Catholic faith. Although we were glad to see them go and grow in this experience, we are glad to have them back! THANK YOU TO ALL for your prayers and support of our youth! Zack (middle) and friends!
