upper elementary lesson 3 p r e pa r i n g to teach Teaching points Adam and Eve willingly turned away from God by eating the fruit Adam and Eve willingly turned away from God by eating the forbidden fruit. But before either of them ever touched the fruit, they had already sinned in their hearts. Eve had sinned by deciding to eat the fruit. Allowing herself to be influenced by the serpent (who was Satan) Eve began to doubt God and trust herself. Adam had sinned by deciding to let Eve eat the fruit even though God said it would bring death. Then, when Eve did not die right away, Adam ate also. So, in the very first sin, we see people trusting themselves rather than God. God s word proved true, and death entered the garden When Adam and Eve sinned, death entered the garden just as God had said it would. When the man and woman sinned, two things happened. First, they died spiritually, which means that something very important about their relationship with God died. This is why they had to leave the garden. Second, they were doomed to die physically even though they did not die right away. If they had never sinned, they would never have died and never had to leave the garden just as Christians in heaven will never die and will never have to leave the presence of God. Mercy appeared in the garden Instead of killing Adam and Eve, God was merciful and gracious. He killed animals and then used their skins to cover Adam and Eve s shameful nakedness. This shedding of animal blood as a substitute punishment for sin was practiced throughout the Old Testament. Every time it happened, it was a picture of how one day Jesus would shed his blood to take our punishment for sin and permanently cover our shame. One day, in heaven, we will rejoice with Adam and Eve, and we will say with them, Christ took our penalty. A LITTLE BIT MORE Original sin When Adam sinned, he sinned as the representative of all future mankind. As a result, his sin is passed on to us. This sin is called original or inherited sin. In addition to the stain of Adam s PAGE 16 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

sin on our record, we are also born as sinners (Romans 5:12). You do not need to teach little babies to disobey. They are sinners from the time that they are born (Psalm 51:5). Ask the children when they disobey people who love and care for them. Help them to see that they disobey their parents in the very same way that Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Explain to them that we inherited sin. Sin was passed down to all men and women as a result of the fall, and we all need to be saved from sin. Where Is Jesus? How does today s Bible story fit into God s greater plan of redemption? Read 1 Corinthians 15:20 22. When Adam and Eve sinned, God was not surprised. He had already appointed Jesus, the Creator of all things, to one day defeat sin and death. As it says in Colossians 1:19 20, For in [Jesus] all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. t h e lesson OPENING REVIEW....5 min Use last week s lesson outline to review with the children what they learned. BIBLE STORY.... 10 min Read Genesis 3:1 24 from the Scriptures or read story 3, Adam and Eve Disobey God, from The Gospel Story Bible. PAGE 17 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

OBJECT LESSON 1.... 10 min Dandelion dig out a large dandelion getting the whole root (If the plant itself is not readily available, a photograph or illustration of the whole dandelion should be easily available through the Internet.) Pass the weed around to the children and ask the following questions: What is this? (a dandelion weed) Why do people hate having dandelions in their lawns? (Weeds like dandelions smother the grass. They also leave their ugly seed heads sticking out of your lawn after the flowers go to seed. One dandelion can spread thousands of seeds across your lawn. Eventually, if not killed or pulled, dandelions can take over your whole lawn.) How does this relate to the curse for man? (Because of the curse, man must labor hard to grow anything whether it is food or a nice lawn. Additionally, though it may be attractive at first, such weeds bring destruction to the healthy grass around them.) What should dandelions help us to remember when we see them? (They should help us to remember our sin has negative consequences on those around us. We cannot sin and get away with it in the end.) TEACHING/DISCUSSION.... 10 min Using the teaching points, teach through the lesson for today. OBJECT LESSON 2.... 10 min The Lie in the Truth pen and worksheet for each student Pass out a worksheet and pen to each of the children with the following written out and space for them to answer. PAGE 18 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

Review the words of Satan in Genesis 3:1, 4 5. List all the parts of Satan s words that were true and then list the parts that were lies. Read Genesis 3:8 13. When God questioned Adam and Eve, what excuses did they make? Talk to the children about how subtle sin can be. The lies of Satan can often be mixed with truth. Also, when we are caught in sin, we make excuses to protect ourselves. Ask the kids to think of other ways sin can be masked with truth. Here are a couple of examples: A cookie that is stolen from a cookie jar will taste good. (The cookie will taste good, but taking it is still wrong.) Hitting your brother after he hits you first is okay because you didn t start the fight. (Hitting a brother is not okay even if you didn t start the hitting. God s word tells us we should not repay evil for evil [1 Peter 3:9].) SWORD BIBLE MEMORY....5 min Take time during the class to review the SWORD Bible Memory verses with the class. Provide the opportunity for each child to recite the verses to an adult worker. ACTIVITY TIME.... 15 min The Fall crayons, colored pencils, and paper Have the children draw a scene from the chapter and label it with the Scripture it depicts. CLOSING PRAYER....5 min Pick several children to pray prayers based on the day s scripture passage. PAGE 19 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

BONUS OBJECT LESSON.... 10 min Grace in the Fall whiteboard and dry-erase markers On the whiteboard, list one or two ways that God demonstrates his grace to Adam and Eve after they sin. Invite the class to participate by raising their hands with suggestions. God does not immediately kill Adam and Eve. God continues to speak to Adam and Eve. God clothes Adam and Eve. God allows Adam to grow food (although it will be hard). God blesses them with the ability to have children. God promises a redeemer. PAGE 20 www.gospelstoryforkids.com
