South Davis Family History Center 3350 South 100 East Bountiful, Utah 84010 (801) 299-4239 Hours of Operation Weekdays: Mon. thru Fri. 9 AM to 4 PM Evenings: Tues. thru Thurs. 7 PM to 9 PM Saturdays 10 AM -1 PM Closed Holidays March - April 2013 I Nephi 3:7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them. In many ways, the words of Nephi are as true for us today as they were for him 2,600 years ago. The Prophet Joseph Smith revealed the doctrine of vicarious ordinances for the dead in September, 1842. In the revelation that became Section 128 verse 15, the Lord tells us, let me assure you that these are principles in relation to the dead and the living that cannot be lightly passed over, as pertaining to our salvation. For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, as Paul says concerning the fathers that they without us cannot be made perfect neither can we without our dead be made perfect. This doctrine has been with us for 170 years. In the past few years, modern technology has allowed the records of our kindred dead to be searched and identified with increasing ease and speed. Millions of records are being indexed and being made available to those who are searching every week. We are living in a marvelous time. We are living in the day when the Lord is truly preparing a way for us to accomplish the thing which he commandeth us. John Dietrich -1-

MENTORING AND CERTIFICATION I am looking out the window of my office. It is a bright, beautiful winter day with very large snow flakes falling on white snow hills that are already 4 high. I have always enjoyed the beauty of winters in Utah. It appears this winter, being an extra cold one, has turned the hearts of many patrons that are visiting the library. According to the leader s guide, To Turn The Hearts means that individuals and families feel a spiritual awakening as they serve their deceased relatives. How are we doing as we assist the patrons that take their time to come to the Family History Center for help with their family history work? Ask yourself if you feel confident and competent most of the time. As I have visited with you in your service as consultants, I hear enthusiasm and I see an anxious-to-learn mode. My hope is that you are, or have, figured out how to go-with-the flow and enjoy the journey as you continue to learn and grow in this important work. Just since November when I started helping Cindy with the consultants mentoring and certification we have seen several revisions in the certification. This is inevitable due to the changes the Church is creating as they build a better mouse trap. Thank you for your efforts to continue to learn and be flexible with change. With the latest and greatest and newest certification form you will notice that we have added a column that says demonstrate, video, manual, tutorial. Please use this column as a guide to meeting some level mastery in the areas that are important to our knowledge base as we serve as consultants. As Cindy indicated in her recent memo, you don t need to redo the areas that you have already completed. Just work with your mentor and as a team to go through the areas listed. The largest section of those collections can be found on your computer. The Family Group Record Collection Archive Section have been scanned and are found on the Historical Records. This is so exciting to find the families that were turned in by our grandparents from 1942 to 1969. The majority of the family group records go back many generations and end prior to the 1500 s. These are the names turned in for temple ordinances by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For years these sheets were kept in Salt Lake City in the library. If you wanted a copy, you could submit an old request form for a TIB (Temple Index Bureau) and Archive Sheet. In 1973 the Genealogical library began filming the sheets. You could order the films, but it would take time to look at the films and for a whole family you may need quite a few films for all the different names. But now you may view the sheets on Family Search. Since the sheets are in alphabetical order by family name then by head of the family, it doesn t take too many clicks to locate the correct family group records. You will need to be signed on to FamilySearch.org to view the records. -6-
Internet Sites Worth A LOOK! DAVID RUMSEY MAP COLLECTION The historical map collection has over 37,000 maps and images online. The collection focuses on rare 18th &19th century North American and South American maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World,Europe,Asia, and Africa are also represented. The collection can be used to study history, genealogy, art, explorations, local and family history. The new MapRank search tool enables geographical searching of the collection by map location and coverage, in a Google Map window. Pan and zoom the Google Map to the area of the world you want maps of, and the results will automatically appear as a scrollable list of maps with thumbnail images in the right side window. The maps in the right side list are ranked by coverage, with the maps that have coverage closest to your search window listed at the top. Mousing over any map in the list will show the map's coverage as a light red rectangle on top of the Google Map. You can filter your results with the When timeline, the What or Who keyword text window, and the Map scale windows, as well as search by place name in the Find a place window. Currently about 12,000 online maps are searchable with MapRank search; soon the entire online collection will be included. http://www. davidrumsey.com/ THE INTERNET ARCHIVE Internet Archive is a non-profit digital library offering free universal access to books, movies & music, as well as 267 billion archived web pages and other cultural artifacts in digital form.
