FALL 2016 1967-2017 It has been fifty years since the Six Day War! Surely one of Israel s formative moments, it continues to have repercussions in the present day. To commemorate this anniversary, please join us for several Adult Education experiences in the coming year: THANKSGIVING SERVICE Holy Cross Catholic Church, Deerfield Sunday, November 20 7:00PM - 9:00PM Join us for a multi-faith celebration of all our blessings. WISE AGING Tuesdays on October 25, November 1, November 15, November 29, and Decebmber 6 7:00PM A special opportunity to find tools to navigate the challenges of aging as we find joy and meaning in our lives. This is more of a chavurah (a group of friends), than a class. Be prepared to share stories from your own life, to listen deeply to others, to study the Jewish tradition that venerates aging and its wisdom, and to feel the richness and joy of the common moment.

A CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS, A THREE PART SERIES ONE WEEK AND A DAY Israeli Cinema Saturday, November 12 8:30PM A humorous look at getting back to normal after shiva. Screened at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Held at ArcLight Cinemas, 1850 Tower Drive, Glenview. Rabbi Serotta will lead a discussion after the film. THE BEN HECT SHOW Theatre/Drama Saturday, January 28 Starring James Sherman Famous Chicago newspaperman turned playwright, screenwriter and novelist confronts his Jewish identity in the face of the Holocaust. Originally performed at the Piven Theatre. Evening includes discussion and dessert. ANNE FRANK CANTATA Music Sunday, April 23, 10:30AM, preceded by a 10:00AM service Adapted from Annelies, original music composed by James Whitbourn, and performed by Cantor Aviva Katzman, Lakeside s Adult Choir, and conducted by Dr. Richard Boldrey. A contemporary piece contrasting the hope and innocence of Anne Fank with the chilling reality of the Nazi regime. Timed to coincide both with Yom HaShoah and to cap off a weekend of special events honoring the beginning of Rabbi Ike s 20th year at Lakeside.

WINTER 2016 - SPRING 2017 LUNCH WITH THE RABBI: LIKE DREAMERS Rabbi Isaac Serotta Tuesdays on January 10, January 24, February 7, February 21, and March 7 11:30AM - 1:00PM Join us for lunch and conversation at Lakeside! During this fivepart series, we will read and discuss Like Dreamers by Yossi Klein Halevi. The acclaimed Israeli Journalist brings together the stories of seven young paratroopers who united East and West Jerusalem and captured the old city. He follows their lives from then to now, a single unit in 1967, remarkably divergent in their views of Israel today, and in their hopes for the future. TORAH AND THE TRAMPS PART TWO Vanessa M. Ehrlich, RJE Tuesdays on January 10 and January 17 7:00PM - 9:00PM Sex, scandal and violence are words not usually associated with Torah study. Join our educator, Vanessa M. Ehrlich, RJE, as we study women in the Bible with tales of adultery, seduction, incest and rape. Our last evening will include a wine tasting! THE SIX DAY WAR IN ITS OWN TIME Tuesdays on April 18, April 25, May 9, May 16, and May 23 Join Rabbi Serotta to examine and discuss articles written before, during, and immediatly after the war from Israeli and American sources.

ONGOING 2016-2017 BIBLE STUDY Every Saturday morning 9:30AM Rabbi Isaac Serotta leads a free-wheeling Bible discussion for an hour before our weekly Shabbat service. We will be starting the book of Joshua - an excellent time to join the group. HEALING SERVICE First Tuesday of every month 6:30PM Whether it is a question of mind, body, or spirit, all of us need a quiet place to heal. Join us for monthly words of comfort and inspiration. INTRODUCTION TO JUDAISM Please let Rabbi Serotta know if you are looking for an introduction class, either for purposes of conversation, or just to refresh your memory from Sunday school. Get in touch at rabbi@lakesidecongregation.org. KABBALAH STUDY GROUP Rabbi Isaac Serotta Tuesday mornings 9:00AM Are you interested in Jewish mysticism? Drop in on our Kabbalah class.
