Our care, consideration and concern for those who are thirsting bring the Person of Christ to others. We do not have to do great things, but simple things in the name of the Christ. It is Christ who will ease those thirsting for peace, joy, healing. Gospel: Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 Jesus explains to his disciples that it is acceptable for a person who is not part of their group to speak in his name, but he does followers astray will be severely punished. Jesus also discusses personal failing and the importance of taking whatever steps are necessary to avoid them. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. How frequently the image of water flows from the scriptures. From the creation account, through the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, to the well at Sichar with the Samaritan woman, the purification jars at Cana or the pool of Bethsaida, water was the center of consideration. Not a sea, not a well, not a pool, but today simply a cup of water given in the name of Jesus. In our day, when people carry a bottle of water with them, when we suffer from droughts in so many places, the cup of water becomes a saving factor. Maybe today, it is the cup given in the name of Jesus which makes it so powerful. Respect Life Sunday, October 4, 2015 is the beginning of Respect Life Month.
