The Spire The newsletter of the Bay Shore United Methodist Church The Rev. Wendy C. Modeste, Pastor October 2015 God is About to Do Something New! Our Church has been doing ministry and serving the Bay Shore Community for 205 years. Our history is rich and we carry on the great work of men and women who gave of themselves in established a solid foundation for us to build upon. Many of them have transitioned to glory, but their legacy remains with us. Others are homebound due to age and illness but their thoughts and prayers are still with us and our ministry. Last but certainly not least, there are those who are still here, serving God and our neighbors in 2015. As much as we appreciate the work of the past, we can t go back there; we need to move into the future. God is getting ready to do something new among us. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. (Isaiah 43:19) The prophet Isaiah reminded the people that the same God who delivered them from Egypt - parting the Red Sea and congealing the water so that they walked through on dry land - this same God has power to deliver them again from their captivity in Babylon. Isaiah asked the question, Can you perceive it? can you see, can you discern what God is about to do? It s called having spiritual insight. Pope Francis said in his recent sermon at Madison Square Garden, One special quality of God s people is their ability to see, discern and contemplate his living presence in the midst of life, in the midst of the City. Can we perceive what God is about to do in our Ministry? The same God who bought us to this place will take us into our future. It does not matter how dark it may seem. God will make a way in the dry places and in the wasteland. We must have confidence and assurance in what we hope for, that which we anticipate and expect God to do through us. We are the church; and the instruments that God will use to bring our ministry into the future. Peace and love! Pastor Wendy

THE SPIRE OCTOBER 2015 PAGE 2 CHARGE CONFERENCE The Charge Conference is the annual general meeting of our Church. We review the programs and ministries of 2015, nominate and elect the leadership for 2016, adopt a budget, and set a vision for the upcoming year. All members of the congregation are urged to attend. Our 2015 Charge Conference will be held on Saturday, October 24th at 10:00 am. This year Charge Conference will be a joint meeting with the Islip UMC and the location will be at the Islip Church, 350 Main Street, Islip NY. This is a time for you to be involved in the life of our Church, and we hope you can take part in this important annual meeting. MISSIONS NEWS Sunday October 4th, 2015 was World Communion Sunday, one of the 6 special Sundays. Your generous donation will help promote the education of the disadvantaged here at home and around the world. We received a letter of appreciation from Bay Shore food pantry for our spring food drive. The fall food drive will be in November. The date and suggested food items will be posted on the Missions bulletin Board very soon. Thank you to the congregation for supporting the Malawi project by donating their empty prescription bottles. The response has been great. We are still accepting the empty prescription bottles and you can also collect bottles from your neighbors to donate. UMCOR Global Ministries sent our Church a thank you letter for our gift of $500.00 to the Imagine No Malaria Campaign. According to UMCOR, one hundred percent of our contribution went towards eliminating one of the world's most deadly diseases. To learn more about how your support is making an impact on this cause, please visit www.imaginenomalria.org. Thank you, Vida Owusu YOGA CLASSES Starting Oct. 3 at 10:45 a.m., Bay Shore United Methodist is hosting a six-week yoga class for men and women interested in fun and fellowship. 30 minutes of yoga, with poses that can be modified for any age or ability (Those who can't stretch can do the breathing exercises). 30 minutes of tea and fellowship. Participants will take home a sheet with Christian meditations -- scripture and a devotional message -- for personal reflection in the week ahead. Cost is $25, which covers all six weeks. (Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7) The yoga portion of the class will be led by registered yoga instructor Shazi Luqman. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring your own yoga mat. Beth DeCarbo will host the informal tea afterward. To sign up, please see Beth DeCarbo at Service or email the Church office at office@bayshoreumc.org Class-size is capped at 10 people, and sign-ups will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

THE SPIRE OCTOBER 2015 PAGE 3 Christmas Craft Fair/Bake Sale and Spaghetti Dinner On Friday, November 13 from 5-7 pm and Saturday, November 14 from 10 am-3 pm we will be having our annual Christmas Craft Fair and Bake Sale. The Boy Scouts will join us on Friday evening by hosting a Spaghetti Dinner. All of you who have attended the dinner in the past know that it is a very delicious meal at a nominal cost. Please come with your friends and family to support both your church and the Boy Scouts. HOMEMADE COOKIES MAKE THE FAIR! We are asking for donations of homemade cookies. Our Bake Sale has always been known for its wide variety of cookies and people come from all over to buy them. If you can bake a batch or two or three, please let Christine Hoff or Donna Lechner know. We will be posting signup sheets in the Fellowship Hall at the beginning of October. Donations towards our raffle basketss will also be listed. Please help out in any way you can. We need clean, metal coffee cans with lids. If you have any to donate, please bring them to church as soon as possible so that we can decorate them. Do you make any kind of crafts? Do you know anyone who does and would like to donate some to our Fair? Please let us know. Again signup sheets will be posted in October. We will also need people to help set up the Craft Fair and work on both Friday evening and Saturday during the day. Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated. All proceeds from our Craft Fair/Bake Sale will go to our church. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! THE SOUP KITCHEN NEEDS YOU Our Soup Kitchen is one of only two in the Bay Shore area, and unfortunately it remains very popular in these difficult times. Volunteers are needed to help minister to our less fortunate neighbors. Your Service even once every two months can make a big differencee in someone s life and be very meaningful to you as well. New volunteers are always paired with experienced old hands and male volunteers provide security. If you can t cook you can serve in other way. Reimbursement for purchases is available for those on tight budgets, and service can be as little as once every eight weeks. To learn more about our Soup Kitchen ministry and how you can be a part of it, please see Tom Wilson at Church or email him at twilson@brightwaters.com

THE SPIRE OCTOBER 2015 PAGE 4 GIRL SCOUTS Troop 1651 meets every Friday from 7-8:30 at the Bay Shore United Church. Our troop is made up of 9-11 grade girls. We are currently working on patches and our journey projects. If anyone is interested in Girl Scouts please email bayshorebrightwatersgirlscouts@gmail.com or see Renee Tucciarone at Church. FINANCE Our current expense ledger is online at bayshoreumc.org/currentexpense Finance is preparing a budget for 2016 and will be presenting at our Church Council meeting on October 18 th and at Charge Conference on October 24 th. Girl Scout Troop 1651 IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OF KAY AND MAC MCCOWN As I sit here doing the Spire, I remember Kay helping and guiding me as a young mother with two very active boys, trying to keep my wits about me as we sat in Church. She showed me patience, some discipline for the boys, and most of all understanding. She suggested I become a Sunday School teacher, and as the Superintendent she taught me how to do the job, and continued to do it even as she retired from that position. Today in Church I watch Eric Schneider guide the young people to light the candles, and giving them support. Eric does many jobs at Church, some seen, most not. He always seems to step up to the plate, so to speak. As Christians, this is our calling; some of us have more talents than others which is only natural. Let us all help as we are able, as Jesus taught us. Ellen Fager. The first place I was ever asked to serve at our Church was on the Membership and Evangelism committee, and Kay McCown was the Chairperson. Kaye and her husband Mac loved our Church, worked tirelessly for it, and continued their support even after transferring their UMC membership to a congregation in their new home. Two more saints from our Church have joined the Company of Heaven. May we gratefully remember their Service and honor it with our own. Tom Wilson
