1 Course overview Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA) Department of Buddhist Studies Diploma in Pali Pali language is accepted today as one of the major eastern classical languages. Its firm link with the Buddhism has caused to increase the enthusiasm in learning Pali into a great extent. Due to the interaction between Pali and Buddhist studies without proper knowledge in Pali language no one will be able to touch the heart of the Buddhist philosophy. The proposed Diploma course offers an introduction to the Pali grammatical components. The course is followed by a combination of grammar lessons, translations, grammatical and doctrinal analysis on selected texts. The Diploma course has been designed as a 30 credits course and it has been scheduled to be conducted 450 hours duration in three major divisions as Part I,II, and III. Each contains 150 hours. Entry Qualification Aims The minimum qualification required for enrollment: G.C.E O/L To teach basic and advanced grammatical components in Pali grammar in a broader discipline by paying special attention to the grammatical and doctrinal analysis of selected texts. Students will also be introduced to simple and complex Pali recitations. So that students will be able to accumulate knowledge on reading, writing and understanding in the Pali language plus, they will be able to follow the advanced grammatical components such as compounds, verb conjugations and passive voice sentence construction, in translating complex and advancedpali sentences into English and vice versa. Objectives Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to 1. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles of the area of study. 2. Interpret and explain advanced grammatical and simple literal components.
3. Make some judgments and apply the language in accordance with the basic theories and concept of the areas of study. 4. Communicate results of studies reliably. 5. Demonstrate skills in reading, understanding and analyzing given sentences. 6. Demonstrate quality and transferrable skills in literature review. 7. Carry out routine works under guidance. 8. Undertake further training and develop new skills within a managed environment 2
