SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 29, 2017 11:00 A.M. Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship silently through the prelude. Bold text is read or sung by the congrega on. *Please stand if able. Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to par cipate in our en re worship service. Pick up a children s worship packet at the sanctuary door. THE GATHERING HANDBELL PEAL ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Those who love music are gentle and honest in their tempers. I always loved music, and would not, for a great matter, be without the little skill which I possess in the art. --Martin Luther MS. SARAH WOLF PRELUDE EIN FESTE BURG IS UNSER GOTT A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD HELMUT WALCHA (1907 1991) In a pairing that began in 1561, this paraphrase of Psalm 100 by a Scot is set to a tune that a French composer originally created for Psalm 134 in the Genevan Psalter of 1551. They have appeared together in nearly every comprehensive English-language hymnal since then. In the presence of a holy God, we become aware of the ways we fall short of God s best hopes for us, and the ways we have hurt others. We turn to God in prayer, asking for forgiveness. *CALL TO WORSHIP Give thanks to God, for God is good. God s steadfast love endures forever. All have sinned and fallen short of God s glory. But by the grace of God we are redeemed. Let us worship God. *OPENING HYMN NO. 385 ALL PEOPLE THAT ON EARTH DO DWELL *CALL TO CONFESSION *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, we pray for your holy catholic church. Fill it with all truth in all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it. Where it is in error, direct it. OLD HUNDREDTH

Where it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it. Where it is in want, provide for it. Where it is divided, reunite it. For the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (from the Book of Common Prayer) (silent prayer and meditation) Amen. We express gra tude that through God s grace and Christ s giving of himself on the cross we are forgiven and restored to God and one another. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE We sing in thanksgiving for the gi s of forgiveness and new life. The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient responses in worship. Having received Christ s peace, we pass it on. *PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! PROCLAIM GOD S WORD Children are invited to sit in the marked pews at the front of the west side of the sanctuary for the Time with the Younger Church. Educa on s cks are located in the hallway outside the west entrance to the sanctuary. GATHERING HYMN (11:00) Leader: Though we are many, we are one fam ly. We are one body in your love. Make us your people, people of Jesus, Make us your people called by love.

The children lead the congrega on in The Lord s Prayer using Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Following the Time with the Younger Church, PK and JK children (three and four-yearolds) may go to Children s Church Con nued (C3). Parents, please take your children out to the hallway by the T.K. Young Room and sign them in. Helpers will escort them to the library. Children two years old or younger may go to the nursery (Conference Room). C3 is in the library for PK and JK children. Children in senior kindergarten and older are welcome to come up for the Time with the Younger Church, then stay in the sanctuary for the en rety of the worship service. Which has presently struck us. Der alte böse Feind, The old foe, Mit Ernst er s jetzt meint, He means it earnestly now. Groß Macht und viel List Great might and much guile Sein grausam Rüstung ist, are his horrible war equipment, Auf Erd ist nicht seinsgleichen. on Earth is not his equal. Es streit vor uns der rechte Mann He struggles for us, the right man, den Gott selbst hat erokoren whom God himself has chosen. Fragst du, wer er ist? Do you ask, who is he? Er heisst Jesu Christ, He is named Jesus Christ, den Herre Zebaoth, Lord God Sabbaoth, und ist kein andrer Gott, and there is no other God; das Feld muss er behalten. He must keep the battlefield. Paul Murray and Donia Rachelle Wade

Paul Murray Only consider, child of God, that such great love, which Jesus Himself with His blood signed over to you, through which He, in the war against Satan s host and against the world and sin, has won you! Do not make a place in your soul for Satan and depravity! Do not let your heart, God s heaven on earth, become a wasteland! Repent your guilt with pain, so that Christ s spirit may firmly bind itself to you! ARIA (SOPRANO) Komm in mein Herzenshaus, Come into my heart s house, Herr Jesu, mein Verlangen! Lord Jesus, my desire! Treib Welt und Satan aus Drive the world and Satan out Und laß dein Bild in mir erneuert prangen! and let your image shine forth renewed in me! Weg, schnöder Sündengraus! Away, contemptible horror of sin! CHOIR And if the world were full of the devil and would devour us, even then we would not be so fearful, we should even then succeed. The prince of this world, however sour he might be, yet can do nothing to us, since he is already judged, a little word can topple him. RECITATIVE (TENOR) So stehe dann bei Christi blutgefärbten Fahne, Then stand with Christ s bloodstained flag, O Seele, fest O soul, firmly, Und glaube, daß dein Haupt dich nicht verläßt, and believe that you will not lose your Leader, Ja, daß sein Sieg indeed, that His victory Auch dir den Weg zu deiner Krone bahne! will also pave the way to your crown! Tritt freudig an den Krieg! March joyfully to war! Wirst du nur Gottes Wort If you only keep God s word So hören als bewahren, as you hear it, So wird der Feind gezwungen auszufahren, then the enemy will be driven out forcibly, Dein Heiland bleibt dein Hort! your Savior remains your treasure! David Harris Schnell

How happy are they, who bear God in their mouths, yet happier is the heart that bears Him in faith! It remains unconquered and can strike at the enemy and will be crowned at last, when it captures death. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God whom we adore. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION

The original French hymn text, some mes a ributed to John Calvin, seems to be a Protestant reworking of a Roman Catholic hymn, not a typical prac ce for him. Yet this hymn text and tune (adapted from GENEVAN 124) clearly date from the early years of the Reformed tradi on. *CLOSING HYMN NO. 624 I GREET THEE, WHO MY SURE REDEEMER ART TOULON *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE DR. WELCOME TO IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Whether you are visi ng for the first me, or are a long me member, we are blessed to have you with us. You will no ce that our vision statement begins and ends with Idlewild Presbyterian Church is a community in which...all who enter might find a home. We take these words seriously. We strive to be a community as diverse and hospitable as God s kingdom. We don t all look or act alike; God knows we don t all think alike. We don t all read the Bible the same way. We bring different ques ons, and we carry different burdens. But every Sunday, we worship together as one. In this grand old church, we do Sunday morning in some pre y tradi onal (very Presbyterian!) ways. We study the teachings and the ac ons of Jesus. We sing many of the same hymns our grandparents sang. Yes, in our preaching and our prayers, (and many of our newer hymns!) we wrestle with the challenges of the modern world. I hope your heart will hear something personal and relevant this morning a word of comfort, a spur to ac on, a call to a deeper rela onship with God. A er the 8:30 service, join us for Sunday School. There are lots of op ons. A er the 11:00 service, s ck around. Come to the fellowship hall for refreshments in the T.K. Young Room. Introduce yourself to one of our clergy. There are tons of opportuni es here to feed your soul and expand your spirit. Try one out. You never know you just might be home! Joyfully, Pastor Steve Montgomery
