THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST (SPIRIT) A Study guide for Leaders in the Body of Christ BY TIMOTHY II Copyright 1995 By Timothy II Revised 1999 Web Site: www.timothy2.org

THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST (SPIRIT) INTRODUCTION: The Baptism with the Holy Ghost is a different experience then when the Holy Ghost comes into us at the time of our Salvation. The Baptism or Filling of the Holy Ghost is when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, Filling us to overflowing. Dr. Duplesis ( Mr. Pentecost) used to say the Filling of the Holy Ghost is like filling up a partially filled glass of water. When the glass is completely Filled, it begins to overflow, until it is totally immersed in water. (Acts 2:4) A good example of the experience of the Baptism with the Holy Ghost being different from the experience of Salvation, is when Jesus was Baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Jesus being God in the Flesh, obviously did not need to be Saved. Therefore, His experience when the Holy Ghost descended upon Him and remained on Him, was that of Jesus being Baptized (or Filled) with the Holy Ghost. (John 1:32, 33) This was for Him to receive Power from God the Father, through the Holy Spirit, to enable Him to go forth and Minister in that Power. (Acts 2:22) Although the Holy Ghost came upon Jesus following His Baptism in water, the Baptism with the Holy Ghost can precede Baptism in water. ((Acts 10:47) In fact, the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, can happen in many ways. Some receive it through the laying on of hands (Acts 8:18 19:6), others through hearing a word. (Luke 1:41 Acts 11:15) There is no set formula. The laying on of hands for the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, is more proof that this is not a Salvation experience, because the Bible does not teach receiving Salvation through the laying on of hands. (Rom. 10:9, 10) Since Jesus was Baptised with the Holy Ghost, He now is the Baptizer, so that when we pray for people to receive the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, we do it in the Name of Jesus. (Luke 3:16 Acts 19:5) After we have been Baptized with the Holy Ghost, we too will receive Power just as Jesus did. (Acts 1:8) Along with this Power comes the Charisma Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These Gifts are given to us by the Holy Spirit, severally as He Wills. (1 Corinthians12:11) These Charisma Gifts are the manifestations of the Holy Spirit given to us to profit with. (1 Cointhians 12:7) They are for us to use to excel in the edifying of the church. (1 Corinthians 14:12) We don t receive all the Gifts at one time, so as we grow in the work of the ministry we need to ask the Holy Spirit for the ones needed for the work. (Luke 11:13) The Bible teaches that we are actually to Desire, be Zealous of, and to Covet the Best Gifts! (1 Corinthians 12:31 14:1 14:12) Amen!

I. THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST IS A SPIRITUAL MATTER: The Baptism with the Holy Ghost is a Spiritual Matter, and can only be understood as such. 1 Cor 2:12-14 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. II. JESUS AND THE HOLY GHOST: Jesus Himself was Baptized with the Holy Ghost. Acts 10:38 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. When Jesus left the earth, He sent the Holy Ghost to us. John 15:26 26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John 16:7 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. III. JESUS IS THE BAPTIZER: Jesus is the Baptizer with the Holy Ghost. When we pray for people to receive the Baptism with the Hol;y Ghost, we should say I Baptise you with the Holy Ghost in the Name of Jesus. John 1:33

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. Matt 3:11 Mark 1:8 Luke 3:16 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: John 4:2 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) IV. THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST MUST FOLLOW BELIEF IN JESUS: Although there is no set formula in receiving the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, it must follow belief in Jesus. Acts 19:1-6 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. V. THE BAPTISM OR (FILLING) WITH THE HOLY GHOST: The Baptism with the Holy Ghost is almost always followed with Tongues; however, sometimes other Gifts also become evident. There may even be a delay in Tongues as there was in my own experience of about three weeks. But they will come. Other evidences of the Baptism with the Holy Ghost is Power, Boldness and Prophesy. Luke 24:49 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:5 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 1:8 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 2:2-4 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 4:31 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. Acts 19:6 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. VI. THROUGH THE FILLING OF THE HOLY GHOST WE CAN DO MIRACLES: Once we are Filled with the Holy Ghost we can do Miracles. Acts 13:9-11 9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, 10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. VII. THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST WILL MOVE US: The Baptism with the Holy Ghost will cause us to want to go out!

Acts 1:8 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 9:20 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. VIII. LAYING ON OF HANDS TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST: Although there are many ways to receive the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, God has chosen one of these ways to be the Laying on of Hands. When I was in the hospital, the Lord told me to have my sister come and lay hands on me to receive the Power I was going to need in the work He was Calling me to do (Read the Timothy II Testimony) Acts 8:14-19 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. Acts 19:6 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. IX. THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST FOLLOWED BY BAPTISM WITH WATER: Jesus was Baptized with water first, and then received the Baptism with the Holy Ghost. The following Scriptures reveal a situation where that process was reversed. This proves that there is no set order of the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, other than that we must be Saved first. We have seen cases where the Baptism with the Holy Ghost immediately followed Salvation, by a sovereign move of God.

Acts 10:44-48 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. X. THE CHARISMA GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT FOLLOW THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST: The Charisma Gifts follow the Baptism with the Holy Ghost. They are the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. THE CHARISMA GIFTS 1 Cor 12:1 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 1 Cor 12:4 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1 Cor 12:7-10 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: The Holy Spirit decides what Gifts we receive, and when He will give them to us. 1 Cor 12:11 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. What we don t receive at the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, we are to Covet and Ask for. 1 Cor 12:31

31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. 1 Cor 14:1 1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 1 Cor 14:12 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. Luke 11:13 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? We do not All have the same Gifts. The following Scriptures are a mixture of Doma and Charisma Gifts. 1 Cor 12:27-30 27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? The obvious answer is NO! We must use these Gifts in Love. 1 Cor 13:1-2 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. Why do we seek the Gifts? 1 Cor 14:12 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. The Gifts are outside of repentance, meaning God does not take them away when we are naughty. This is because it would hurt those expecting to receive the blessings from our ministry. If they had to wait for us to be Holy, they might have to keep coming back for the right time. Instead, God blesses them no matter what our circumstances are, or what state we are in. Praise God for that!

Rom 11:29 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. XI. EXAMPLES OF THOSE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY GHOST: John the Baptist. Luke 1:13 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. Luke 1:15 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. Luke 1:17 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. In order for John to be Filled with Holy Ghost from the womb, his mother had to be Filled before his birth. Luke 1:41-42 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Zacharias, John s father was Filled with the Holy Ghost later, because he did not believe the Angel s words. Luke 1:19-20 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. Luke 1:67 67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Paul s Baptism (Filling) with the Holy Ghost : Acts 9:17-20

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. 19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. When choosing the Deacons of the Church, they should be Filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 6:2-6 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. Stephen. Acts 6:8 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Acts 6:10 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Acts 7:55 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, Philip. Acts 8:5-7 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

XII. IS THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY GHOST FOR TODAY? Is God still Baptizing with the Holy Ghost today? Acts 2:16-18 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: Even more so in these last days, because He is POURING OUT of His Spirit! PTL! CONCLUSION: SOME STILL RESIST THE HOLY GHOST: Some will always resist the Holy Ghost, and will not receive the blessing of being Baptized with the Holy Ghost. This is their loss, and it will limit what they will achieve for the Kingdom of God. Acts 7:51 51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. YOUR WHOLE HOUSEHOLD MAY BE SAVED IF YOU WILL NOT WITHSTAND GOD! Acts 11:12-17 12 And the spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: 13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; 14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!!

THEREFORE, LET US GO ON FROM THESE PRINCIPLES: Hebrews 6: 1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Hebrews 6: 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Hebrews 6: 3 And this will we do, if God permit. AMEN! TIMOTHY II
