The Baptism of the Holy Spirit BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST The word ghost means the spirit of the departed. The Holy Ghost is the Holy Spirit of God that dwelled in the body of Jesus Christ, left that physical body on Calvary so that the flesh could die, and then re-entered the body on the third day, resurrecting it. It is this same power which was poured out in the hearts of believers to make them overcomers. The Old Testament talked about the Spirit of God that was going to be sent, poured out in the lives of believers. God said He would literally pour out His spirit upon all flesh. JOEL 2:28-29 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. ACTS 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. The Spirit of God was very active in the Old Testament; however, the people of the Old Testament did not receive the Spirit of God in the measure that we receive it today because we are a part of the Church Age when the Spirit of God is being poured out. God was with them in the Old Testament, but God is in the people of the New Testament. Jesus, during His earthly ministry, promised the believers they would be filled with the Holy Ghost. He said it was going to come to His disciples, His followers. The Holy Ghost is called the Comforter, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Light, the Spirit of Truth.

JOHN 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth... JOHN 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. JOHN 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart, I will send him unto you. ACTS 1:4-5...wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he (Jesus), ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. THE HOLY SPIRIT / HOLY GHOST / COMFORTER There is One Spirit: I CORINTHIANS 12:13 For by ONE spirit are we all baptized into one body... and have been all made to drink into ONE Spirit. Who is that One Spirit? JOHN 4:24 God is a Spirit... You cannot see a spirit. LUKE 24:39

...for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me (Jesus) have. So the Spirit (God) was invisible but the flesh and blood man (Jesus) was visible. God (Spirit) robed Himself in the flesh and blood body of Jesus Christ. JOHN 1:1, 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. II CORINTHIANS 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself. COLOSSIANS 2:9 For in him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. The Spirit of God, which could not be seen, was manifested in the fleshly body of Jesus. No man has ever seen God at any time, and no man ever will, because you cannot see a spirit. All of God you will ever see is contained in the person of Jesus Christ. JOHN 10:30 I (Jesus) and my Father are one. JOHN 12:45 And he that seeth me (Jesus) seeth him that sent me. JOHN 14:9...He that hath seen me (Jesus) hath seen the Father. Believest thou not that I (Jesus) am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. ACTS 9:5 And he (Apostle Paul) said, Who art thou, Lord (God)? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest... Additional scriptures saying God is the Comforter (Speaking of the Spirit of God for "God is a Spirit"): II CORINTHIANS 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of

mercies, and the God of all comfort. Who comforteth us in all our tribulations... EPHESIANS 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. Notice the next verse: EPHESIANS 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith. God says to be strengthened by the might of His Spirit by the indwelling of Jesus Christ! The Spirit of God that dwells in us is none other than Jesus Christ in us! Additional scriptures saying Jesus Is the Comforter, Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit: JOHN 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my (Jesus) name... JOHN 14:18 I (Jesus) will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. JOHN 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him (Jesus); for he dwelleth with you, and shall be IN you. COLOSSIANS 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of Glory. All of these verses are correct. God is the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus is the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit. This is because there is only one Spirit, and that is the Spirit of God, and that Spirit of God dwelled in the fleshly body of Jesus Christ. After the resurrection, the Spirit of Christ (which was God's own Spirit) came to those who were ready to receive Him. Once again, There is One Spirit! One Comforter! One Holy Ghost! One God! These three are one and

the same! The Bible is clear on this. DO WE NEED THE HOLY GHOST? Receiving the Holy Ghost is not an option. It is a command towards salvation. JOHN 20:22 Receive ye the Holy Ghost. It is part of the New Birth and is essential for salvation. JOHN 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Receiving the Holy Ghost is part of the scriptural plan for salvation. ACTS 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. The Holy Ghost is Essential to Holiness, and Holiness is Essential for Heaven. God has commanded us to be Holy because He is Holy. HEBREWS 12:14 Follow peace with all men; and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. LEVITICUS 11:44 For I am the Lord your God; you shall therefore sanctify yourselves and ye shall be holy; for I am holy. The necessity of holiness is stressed in our Bible over 600 times! It is essential if we are to see God; yet, it is impossible without His Spirit living

in us. Man can become holy only through divine assistance, primarily the infilling and indwelling of the Holy Ghost. God knew we could not be holy by our own efforts, and His unfathomable love for us provided the power we would need by the indwelling of His own Spirit inside of us. He has made every provision for our salvation. Without the Spirit, We Do Not Belong To God. ROMANS 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. Now, if any man have not the spirit of Christ, He is none of his. The Spirit affirms we are His children. ROMANS 8:14, 16 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. THE RESIDENCE OF THE HOLY GHOST WILL CHANGE US When a person has been obedient to the command of Jesus and has been born of Water and Spirit, they have become a new creature. That is why it is called the New Birth, why it is referred to as being born again. It changes the recipient. It transforms them! The old nature will be buried, the old life buried. They have arisen a new creature, and they are now taught, guided, and perfected by the Holy Spirit. The change is obvious to everyone. II CORINTHIANS 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, All things are become new.

ROMANS 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect will of God. EPHESIANS 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace. EPHESIANS 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. The real New Birth is more than a statement one makes after having gone through some man-made ritual or motions. God is not dead, and when we get the real thing, He makes sure we know He's alive and still has all His power! The Scriptures say it is like fire shut up in our bones! The real New Birth will change us, cause us to be different without our trying to be. We will look different, dress different, talk different; walk different, act different, BE different! We have been separated out from the world unto God, and the genuine New Birth will put God's mark of identification not only on His people, but in His people. EZEKIEL 36:26-27 A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments and do them. JEREMIAH 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Anyone professing the New Birth but who remains the same old person is not born again.

THE HOLY GHOST WILL TEACH US It is the Holy Ghost that teaches and guides us towards all holiness. JOHN 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. JOHN 16:13 Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth; for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. The Holy Ghost will even teach us what to say. LUKE 12:12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. The Holy Ghost never leads people into false teachings or false doctrines. The Holy Ghost will lead people to truth only. The world in its worldly philosophy and ideas is not going to be able to receive the Spirit of Truth because it can never be received with the philosophical thinking of the world. Worldly thinking is in opposition to the Holy Spirit. We need the mentality of the Spirit of God, not just the thinking of men. While teaching, instructing and guiding us, the Holy Ghost will also be our Comforter and will give us rest. MATTHEW 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

THE HOLY GHOST PROTECTS US, KEEPS US, PERFECTS US UNTIL JESUS CHRIST RETURNS TO RAPTURE UP HIS BRIDE Merely feeling the presence of God once in a while will not get us to heaven! There is no power in that, no victory, no perfection of our souls to make us ready for the bride groom. We must have Christ on the inside to help us become what we must be if we are to be holy and acceptable to God. EPHESIANS 4:30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. EPHESIANS 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. Which is the earnest of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. JUDE 24 Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. THE HOLY GHOST TAKES US UP AND OUT OF HERE!

It is His indwelling Spirit that will lift us up to meet Him in the air. ROMANS 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. WITHOUT RECEIVING THE HOLY GHOST, WE CAN NEVER KNOW GOD The Bible says the world knew not God by wisdom. We do not and cannot know God by the wisdom of men, nor the thinking of men. We can know God only through the power of the Holy Ghost! PHILIPPIANS 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. "That I may know him and the power of his resurrection" is the power of the Holy Ghost! We know God through our possession of the Holy Ghost! It is the power that saves! ROMANS 13:1-2 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive unto themselves damnation. The above verse says that without the power of the Holy Ghost, there is damnation! TO BE IN THE FAMILY OF

GOD, WE MUST HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT I CORINTHIANS 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. II CORINTHIANS 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. THE HOLY GHOST GIVES US LIBERTY II CORINTHIANS 3:17 Now, the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. The Holy Ghost gives us deliverance, redemption, salvation, freedom, privilege. The bottom line is we cannot and will not make it to heaven without the infilling of the Holy Ghost. This is the clear teaching of the Bible. HISTORY OF THE HOLY GHOST BAPTISM The Holy Ghost was first poured out on the Day of Pentecost in the upper room in Jerusalem to all that were there; thus, the Jews were the first to receive it.

ACTS 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty)... ACTS 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat on each of them. And they were ALL filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. At Peter's first sermon following the pouring out of the Holy Ghost, the Jews were pricked in their hearts and asked him how to be saved. Notice Peter s answer. ACTS 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even a many as the Lord our God shall call. The Samaritans and Gentiles then received the Holy Ghost. ACTS 8:14-17 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. ACTS 10:44-46 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. In every instance, there was one man who was always present, and that man was Peter. The reason?

MATTHEW 16:19 (Jesus speaking) And I will give unto thee (Peter) the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. If you want to get into a building, you have to find the person with the keys. Jesus was giving Peter the authority of the Kingdom of God, and all of heaven was authorizing or backing up that which he preached and taught. What he preached was not his own word but the Word of God. He had to open the door for the Jews, the Samaritans and the Gentiles. PREPARATION FOR RECEIVING THE HOLY GHOST 1. Faith 2. Faith is the first thing we must have. It is essential! JOHN 7:38-39 He that believeth on me as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him shall receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. MARK 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. ACTS 16:30-31 Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ... 3. Repentance of Sins 4. Repentance of sins is the second thing we must take care of in preparation to receive the Holy Ghost. It is an absolute turning away from sin. Repentance affects the entire man, the entire person. Sins must be confessed to God not a priest, not a preacher, not a rabbi for only God forgives sins. This confirms to God that we intend to change our way of living. LUKE 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Peter taught repentance on the day of Pentecost. Paul taught that repentance

was absolutely necessary. ACTS 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent. John the Baptist preached everywhere on repentance. 5. Baptism 6. Baptism follows faith and repentance. John the Baptist preached baptism for the remission of sins. MARK 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. (Some people do get the Holy Ghost before they get baptized. God knows the heart, and these people obey the Word of God and get baptized afterward.) ACTS 2:38-39 Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Water baptism is the circumcision of the heart, not of the flesh. Did you know that Jesus did, in fact, baptize people? Your Bible says He baptized more disciples than John. JOHN 3:22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them and baptized. JOHN 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John. 7. Obedience 8. Obedience is essential to receiving the Holy Ghost! ACTS 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that "obey" him. 9. Praise and Worship God Extremely important to receiving the Holy Ghost Baptism is praise and worship! It is one of the greatest keys of entering the fullness of the presence of God. LUKE 24:53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. You do not have to beg God for the infilling of His Spirit. Just ask in faith and receive. God will keep His promise and will do what He says. The Holy Ghost is a gift; just ask for it and then accept it. LUKE 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
