Stafford Family Papers, 1832-1989 Doc 347 (and Doc 348-350, XMSC 44.1-21, Ms Size D) Introduction The document the personal, business, and social activities of a politically significant family of South Wallingford, Vermont. The collection (Ms.Acc.No. 94.6) was donated to the library by Stephen I. Dietz, who acquired them at auction in 1994. It occupies four document storage boxes (4 linear feet), and includes twenty-one oversize volumes. Scope and Content The Stafford family papers are made up of the papers Dwight B. Stafford and his sons, Guy L. Stafford and Ralph E. Stafford of South Wallingford, Vermont. Included are account books of the Stafford Brothers farm, ca. 1936-1969, documenting milk and maple syrup production, and personal accounts. There are also diaries of Dwight Stafford, 1881-1908; Guy Stafford, 1915-1930, Ralph Stafford, 1918-1953, and of Ralph s wife, Mabel A. Rice Stafford, 1937-1941. Dwight Stafford s grandfather, Palmer Stafford, is represented in the collection, 1831-1840, as is his uncle Palmer Stafford, 1884-1897. Records of the Union Driving Park Society, 1902-1961, the Maple Valley Grange, 1904-1960, the Masons, 1907-1989, the Order of the Eastern Star, 1913-1965, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, 1895 and 1925, are included because of the involvement of family members in these various organizations. The Union Driving Park Society sponsored the annual South Wallingford Fair which included, among other things, horse races. There are papers in this collection of Ann Brown, 1911-1916; Ida Brown, 1884; and Abbie, Marcella E. and Mrs. Louisa Mason of Cavendish, Vermont, ca 1900-1910. The direct connection of these people to the Dwight Stafford family is unclear. Biographical Sketches Dwight B. Stafford was born January 11, 1860, the son of Boardman Foster and Frances Bruce Stafford. Born in South Wallingford, Vt., on the family farm, he lived there and operated the farm until his death on December 9, 1936. In 1885 he married Esther Cobb and together they had three sons, Miles (1888-1952), Guy Lyman (1890-1979), and Ralph E. (1905-1993). Active in local and state politics, Dwight represented Wallingford in the state legislature in 1908-1909, and was elected state senator in 1936 but died before the term began. He also served as school director from 1892 to 1894, and was a selectman and overseer of the poor for many years. Stafford was active in the Maple Valley Grange, the Chipman Lodge of the Masons, and the Waverly Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Page 2 Guy Lyman Stafford was born in Wallingford, Vt., in 1890, the son of Dwight and Esther Stafford. He operated Stafford Brothers farm with brother Ralph. In 1930 he married Ruth Bell Mathewson (1898-1971). Like his father, Guy Stafford was active in the Maple Valley Grange, the Chipman Lodge of the Masons, and the Waverly Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He also was master of the Killington Pomona Grange, overseer and executive committee member of the Vermont State Grange, and a member of the Farm Bureau and Vermont Maple Sugar Maker s Association. In 1941-1942 he served in the Vermont House of Representatives, and was senator from Rutland County in 1945-1946. He was a member of the South Wallingford Congregational Church where he was a deacon. He died December 11, 1979. Ralph Edwin Stafford, the youngest son of Dwight and Esther Stafford, was born in South Wallingford on March 2, 1905. He was a farmer, in business with his brother, Guy, and was also an insurance agent. In 1942 he married Mabel Rice. He was active in politics and served as a member of the House in 1947-1948, 1963-1978, and was a state senator, 1949-1956. He also was a selectman and overseer of the poor in Wallingford, 1940-1947. Along with politics, Ralph Stafford was involved in community and business organizations including the Masons, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Grange, the Farm Bureau, Cairo Temple Shrine, Vermont Maple Sugar Association, and the Republican Town Committee. He died November 1, 1993. Organization The papers are divided into six series: I. Personal records; II. Financial and business records; III. Social organizations; IV. Scrapbooks; V. Photographs; VI Miscellaneous. Series one is subdivided into personal papers and diaries and arranged chronologically by person. Series two is divided by account books and business papers. Because many of the account books are unidentified but most likely are accounts of the Stafford family farm, they have all been interfiled chronologically. The business papers are arranged by person. Series three is arranged by organization. Series four, five, and six are arranged by record type. Related Items Several items from the collection have been transferred to the VHS museum collection (acc. no. 1994.54.1). They include Ralph E. Stafford legislative license plates, a maple syrup bottle with the Stafford Brothers label on it, a box of silver Grange icons, and a Masonic string tie. An inventory is in Doc 347, Folder 0.
