June 14, 2009 St. Florian Parish Page Three Body and Blood of Jesus Christ Celebrating the Real Presence The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ reflects the Church s developing understanding of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Originally called the Feast of Corpus Christi, this celebration grew out of a controversy in the Middle Ages over the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Some made the claim that Christ was physically present in such a way that the consecrated Host became human flesh. Others said Christ was present in the Eucharist only in a spiritual way. The Feast of Corpus Christi, established throughout the Church in 1264, proclaims faith in the full yet mysterious Eucharistic presence of Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas, author of liturgy for the Feast, argued that we know Christ is fully present in the Eucharist by faith, not by our senses or by human understanding alone. Traditional Corpus Christi celebrations included Eucharistic processions, Benediction and the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Today, the feast is known as the Body and Blood of Christ, celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. Vatican Council II emphasized the importance of the Eucharist as a communal liturgical celebration, but also reaffirmed the Church s teaching about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Since the Council, the popes have urged a continued devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Feast of Corpus Christi Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, we worship You living among us in the Sacrament of Your Body and Blood. May we offer to our Father in heaven a solemn pledge of undivided love. May we offer to our brothers and sisters a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom where You live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF THE WORD! COME AND EXPLORE AT DISCOVERY CANYON Mark your calendars for July 27 - July 31 from 9AM to Noon in air-conditioned Konsowski Hall. Thank you for your support! Thank you for supporting Bingo!! St. Florian School would like to thank everyone who came out to play and to work our Bingo over the past school year. The Sunday Bingos are a major part of our school fund raising programs. They help the school offset the rising cost of tuition and other operating expenses. The Bingos also provide a fun way for members of our community to socialize and possibly win a few dollars. This year we not only had two Super Bingos, but also had a couple mostaccioli bingos. We look forward to building on our successes next year. The Bingo Committee will be meeting over the summer to look at ways to further improve this vital school fund raiser and parish activity. We will be seeking your input as well. We also invite all of you to our Bingos starting the next school year. Thanks for your continued support of St. Florian School and our Sunday Bingos. We cannot succeed without your support. A note of thanks from the Class of 1959... Members of the Class of 1959 wish to thank Fr. Jim, Mr. McKenna, members of the school board, the parish choir, organist and sacristan and all others who helped create a very memorable celebration at Mass last Sunday. We are also grateful for the hospitality extended as we were given a tour of the school. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to gather together and revisit our school and church. May God bless St. Florian Parish and School in the years to come.
