LEADER S GUIDE 2nd- Lesson Overview If you want to survive and win at being a kid, you need to make sure to have certain things in place. Today, we re going to talk about obedience. To obey means you do what you re told to do. And, if we really want to win as a kid, we need to obey our parents. You know why? There are two reasons. First, the Bible tells us to obey our parents. And, if God says that we should do something, then we should do it. Second, obeying our parents is for our protection. Our parents give us rules to help us to succeed and to protect us from danger. And, here s one more thing. When you obey, don t forget the I- C-E. Obey Immediately, Cheerfully and Exactly. So, if you really want to win as a kid, obey your parents. Big Idea We should obey our parents Key Question Why does God want us to be obedient? Memory Verse Colossians 3:20 Obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord. Classroom Agenda 1. (5 min) PLAY: Let kids start working on Activity Page #1. 2nd-5th puzzle key: Obedience, Bible, Parents. Message: Obey your parents. 2. (5 min) WARM UP: What are some of the rules at home that are easy to obey? Which ones are harder to obey? (Tip: Obeying can be hard sometimes, especially when it s about doing things we don t want to do. But, God tells us to be obedient, so we should work to be good at it.) 3. (5 min) PREVIEW: Write out the Big Idea, Memory Verse, and Key Question on a whiteboard. Have the kids copy it down on Activity Page #1 (if applicable). 4. (20 min) LARGE GROUP: Gather for songs and videos with other kids. Then return to class to finish this guide. 5. (2 min) RECAP: Read the Lesson Overview (see above). 6. (3 min) KQ: Answer the Key Question. (Answer: Because, he wants us to be safe and away from danger. (Obeying God s word, and our parents, is for our protection. God knows what we need and what we should avoid. That s why he gave us the Bible- to help us to stay on the right path. And, he gives us parents who give us rules to keep us safe. Our job is to obey so we re protected from danger. If we choose to disobey, we ll be putting ourselves in dangerous situations that aren t good for us.) Bonus Questions: Why does God want us to be obedient? Give a few examples of rules you have at home that protect you from danger? 4-5th: Give some examples of how disobedience can lead to dangerous situations. 7. (5 min) EXPLORE: Read James 1:22-24. What is God s word? Why is it foolish to know what the Bible says but not do what it says? (Answer: God s word is the Bible. God gave us the Bible to know the right way to live so we need to be sure to obey it. If we read it, but don t obey, then we re not going to be safe. God can t protect us if we don t listen to him. Our parents can t protect us if we don t obey their rules, either.) 8. (10 min) PLAY: Choose a group activity from Activity Page #2. 9. (5 min) CLOSE: Share prayer requests and pray as a class.
