SUI DYNASTY United the country!...again Built the Grand Canal and restored the Great Wall of China Oppressive government led to the fall of the Sui What the Grand Canal looks like Today

TANG DYNASTY Gained power in the kingdom by giving land back to ordinary people. This allowed for more money from taxes. Built more roads, canals and strengthened the economy. Also had the only female ruler, Empress Wu. -> This resulted in the increase of women's rights Empress Wu Tang Dynasty architecture influenced many other kingdoms!

EXPANSION OF THE EMPIRE Created tributary states out of Afghanistan, Tibet, Vietnam, and Korea. - These areas had to send a gift each year to the Tang it showed that the Tang were all powerful and would not invade their kingdoms. Complete #1 of Section III: Why would a tributary system increase the Tang Dynasty s power over other Asian kingdoms?

EDUCATION SYSTEM - Government exams were open to everyone. - Government positions were highly respected in society - A series of intense exams with only 2% or 3% passing! LITERATURE The Tang Dynasty had access to millions of books and poetry! Good poetry is honored in China and follows strict rules. What was Li Bai trying to say in his poem Fighting South of the Ramparts? Why would he argue that war should be the last option in conflict? The last surviving text originally written by Li Bai.

TIME TRAVELER POSTER ASSIGNMENT Will be given time next class to plan your Time Traveler Poster! It is a travel ad, but instead of traveling to a modern day country, it is to a specific Chinese Dynasty. Work in pairs or on your own. *Note* If you work in a pair, you will get the same mark! Make sure you choose your partner carefully!
