Thomas and A Resurrection Nickname 2 nd Sunday of Easter April 11 & 12, 2015

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: On this Second Sunday of Easter, the Gospel recalls the issue of the absence of the apostle Thomas at the Lord s first appearance and His special appearance to Thomas eight days later. Because of that we have given him the nickname doubting Thomas. Doubting is actually a kind word for the apostle s refusal to believe! The apostles gave a disciple named Joseph the nickname Barnabas, which means son of encouragement. The testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus gave Barnabas the grace and power to be an encourager by his generosity. That same fact of Easter gives us the grace and power to become encouragers of one another. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Gracious God, by the joy of our Lord s resurrection You filled the heart of Thomas with saving faith. Give to us this same faith and joy that we may reflect Your heart of love to those around us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE DIVINE SERVICE PROCESSIONAL HYMN At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing LW 126 2

At the Lamb s high feast we sing Praise to our victorious king, Who has washed us in the tide Flowing from his pierced side. Praise we him, whose love divine Gives his sacred blood for wine, Gives his body for the feast Christ the victim, Christ the priest. Where the paschal blood is poured, Death s dread angel sheathes the sword; Israel s hosts triumphant go Through the wave that drowns the foe. Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal victim, paschal bread; With sincerity and love Eat we manna from above. INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES 1 John 1:5b 7 God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 3

If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Let us therefore confess our sins to God our Father. Silence for self-examination. Lord God, our heavenly Father, we confess to You that our sins have brought shame to us and to Your name. By those sins we have done and those works of love we have failed to do, we deserve Your judgment and condemnation. Yet, O God, You sent Your Son to take away our sin. By His resurrection victory grant us forgiveness, life, and salvation. Amen. If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. By the command of the risen Lord, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. INTROIT Psalm 105:1 5, 8; antiphon: 1 Peter 2:2 3 All: Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation 4

KYRIE if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wondrous works! Glory in His holy name let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His presence continually! Remember the wondrous works that He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He uttered. He remembers His covenant forever, the word that He commanded, for a thousand generations. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, Is now, and will be forever. Amen. ALL: Lord have mercy on us, Christ have mercy on us, Lord have mercy on us. HYMN OF PRAISE "This is the Feast of Victory" LW page 161 Refrain: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, Alleluia, Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, Whose blood set us free to be people of God? (Refrain) Power, riches, wisdom and strength, 5

And honor blessing and glory are his. (Refrain) Sing with all the people of God And join in the hymn of all creation. Blessing, honor, glory, and might Be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. (Refrain) For the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia. (Refrain) SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, grant that we who have celebrated the Lord s resurrection may by Your grace confess in our life and conversation that Jesus is Lord and God; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST LESSON common.) Acts 4:32 35 (They had everything in This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

HYMN OF THE DAY O Sons and Daughters of the King TLH 208 1. Ye sons and daughters of the King, Whom heavenly hosts in glory sing, Today the grave hath lost its sting: 2. On that first morning of the week, Before the day began to break, The Marys went their Lord to seek: 3. An angel bade their sorrow flee, For thus he spake unto the three: "Your Lord is gone to Galilee": EPISTLE 1 John 1:1 2:2 (Walking in the Word of Life, our Advocate) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN OF THE DAY O Sons and Daughters of the King TLH 208 4. That night the Apostles met in fear, Amidst them came their Lord most dear And said: "Peace be unto you here": 5. When Thomas afterwards had heard That Jesus had fulfilled His word, He doubted if it were the Lord: 7

6. "Thomas, behold My side," saith He, "My hands, My feet, My body, see; "And doubt not, but believe in Me": HOLY GOSPEL John 20:19 31 (Jesus appears to His disciples including Thomas.) The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 20th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read.) This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. 8

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY O Sons and Daughters of the King TLH 208 7. No longer Thomas then denied; He saw the feet, the hands, the side; "Thou art my Lord and God," he cried: 8. Blessed are they that have not seen And yet whose faith hath constant been, In life eternal they shall reign: 9. On this most holy day of days To God your hearts and voices raise In laud and jubilee and praise: 10. And we with holy Church unite, As evermore is just and right, In glory to the King of light: SERMON OFFERING OFFERTORY (LW page 143) 9

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen PRAYERS LORD S PRAYER COLLECT FOR THE WORD Blessed Lord, who has caused all Holy Scripture to be written for our learning, grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life which You have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with Thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, now and forever. Amen. BENEDICTION The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; The LORD look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. 10

HYMN Blest Be the Tie That Binds TLH 464 1. Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like to that above. 2. Before our Father's throne We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our alms, are one, Our comforts and our cares. 3. We share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear, And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear. 4. When here our pathways part, We suffer bitter pain; Yet, one in Christ and one in heart, We hope to meet again. 5. This glorious hope revives Our courage by the way, While each in expectation lives And longs to see the day. 6. From sorrow, toil, and pain, And sin we shall be free And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity. Creative Worship for the Lutheran Parish, Series B, Part 1. OUR MISSION AND MINISTRY IN OUR PRAYERS: We pray for those who are sick, facing surgery or convalescing, including, Robin McCoy, Jim Kormeier, Doris Biermann, Dave Shearman, Lawrence Pelster, Robert Bunge, Donna Kirschenmann, Paul Creek, Dorris Bade, and Wanda Kassebaum that their sickness may be turned to health and that they may experience the love of God through our care and concern. Our neighbor, Greg Pointer, entered eternal rest with Jesus on April 1 st after a long struggle with cancer. His daughters, April and Samantha are members of our congregation. The funeral service will be held here this afternoon at 1:00 PM. We also pray for comfort for Marie Engel and her family. Her husband, Leonard Engel passed away this past Tuesday morning. Pastor had a funeral service at the chapel at the Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery Friday morning. Marie attends our Saturday evening worship services quite frequently. We also want to remember the many shut-ins and friends of our congregation and community, especially, Art Hohlt, Adeline Keune, Edna Deppermann, Helen Bode, Hugo Nething, Wilbert Helling and Wilma Helling, and all those we remember in our hearts. We pray for our ministry and the people of this congregation, that as God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, we may say and do those things that give glory to God and spread the love of Christ in all the world. We pray also for all the Pastors and Teachers of our Circuit, District, and Missouri Synod, that our Lord Jesus 12

would sustain His Church here and around the world with His Word and Sacraments. We also ask the Lord to keep our Missionaries here in our country and around the world safe. We especially pray for Robin McCoy, that she will be feeling better, and John Strasen as he retired from Lutheran Bible Translators. O God, let all the nations praise You. Guide and direct the minds and hearts of all leaders in Government that peace may prevail, evil be punished and good rewarded. Grant wisdom to our elected officials, our President, Vice President, Governors of all states, and community leaders, those who respond to emergencies of health, fire, flood and who meet the physical and emotional needs of those who rely on them. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ To our members and guests who are here with us today. Thursday Bible Study Resumes April 23 rd 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM Regrets, Reality, Restoration The simple truth is life is full of regrets. Imprinted on our psyches, some resist all attempts at erasure. What do we do when the condemning memory of past offences won t be silenced? Is there a way out beyond our backstory? Regrets, Reality, Restoration shows there is, by sharing the life stories of those who have found resolution and victory over the heartache of their pasts. Rev. Greg Seltz, Lutheran Hour Speaker, has just concluded a four part sermon series on the Lutheran Hour on this topic. Lutheran Laymen s League Men s Network has made this Bible Study available to all congregations. It is Pastor s prayer that many will join this wonderful, informative Bible Study. Thrivent Financial Year-to-date Thrivent Choice income is $1,940.00. Thank you for designating Ebenezer for your Thrivent Choice dollars. 14
