The Opening Acclamation Please stand Celebrant Bless the Lord who forgiveth all our sins. People His mercy endureth for ever. Tolling of the Angelus If you re visiting with us today, welcome to Christchurch! You bless us with your presence! The Holy Eucharist, Rite I In Lent, we use the more penitential language of Rite One. The tolling of bells that begins the liturgy is a sixteenth century practice called the Angelus. Three sets of three tolls followed by a set of nine tolls represent prayers said in honor of the Trinity. While the Angelus is being rung, this prayer may be used by the people for silent meditation. We adore thee, most Holy Trinity, we worship thee, and thank thee that Thou hast revealed to us this glorious Mystery. Grant, we beseech thee, that persevering in this Faith, and loving thee above all things, we may see thee and glorify thee eternally, whom we confess here, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, one God in Three Persons, blessed for evermore. The Exhortation Dearly beloved in the Lord: if you intend to come to the Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ, you must consider how Saint Paul, in his Letter to the Corinthians, exhorts us all diligently to examine ourselves before we presume to eat of that Bread, and drink of that Cup. For as the benefit is great, if we receive that holy Sacrament with a truly penitent heart and lively faith; spiritually eating the flesh of Christ and drinking his blood, so that we might be made one with Christ and he with us; so also is the danger great, if we receive the same unworthily. For then we become guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of Christ our Savior, and we eat and drink to our own condemnation. Therefore, judge yourself lest you be judged by the Lord. First, examine your life by the rule of God s commandments. Wherever you have offended, either by thought, word, or deed, there confess your sins unto Almighty God, with the full intention to amend your life; be ready to make restitution for all injuries and wrongs done by you to others; and also be ready to forgive others who have offended you: for otherwise, if you unworthily receive Holy Communion, you will increase your own condemnation. Therefore, repent of your sins, or else do not come to God s Holy Table. If you have come here today with a troubled conscience, and you need help and counsel, come to me, or to some other priest, and confess your sins; that you may receive godly counsel, direction, and absolution. To do so will both satisfy your conscience and remove any scruples or doubt. Post Communion Prayer Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Prayer over the People Grant, Almighty God, that your people may recognize their weakness and put their whole trust in your strength, so that they may rejoice for ever in the protection of your loving providence; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Recessional Hymn 448 O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High Above all, each of us should give humble and hearty thanks unto God, for the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Savior Jesus Christ. He humbled himself, even to death on a cross, for us sinners who lay in darkness and in the shadow of death; that he might make us children of God, and exalt us unto everlasting life. Because of his exceedingly great love for us, our Savior Jesus Christ has instituted and ordained these holy mysteries as pledges of his love, and for a continual remembrance of his death and passion, to our great and endless comfort. To him, therefore, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, let us give continual thanks, as is our duty and our joy; submitting ourselves entirely to his holy will and striving to serve him in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life. Amen. The Confession of Sin Please kneel Celebrant Let us humbly confess out sins unto Almighty God. 3 16

Communion Music The King of Love My Shepherd Is The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine for ever. Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth. In death s dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spread st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! Celebrant and People Almighty and most merciful father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Absolution Please remain kneeling Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. Celebrant The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. Kyrie Communion Music Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face; here would I touch and handle things unseen; here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace, and all my weariness upon thee lean. Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness; mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing Blood. Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace; thy Blood, thy righteousness, O Lord, my God Children are dismissed to Children s Church at this time. Cantor Together, let us pray to Christ our Lord, who intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father: Here would I feed upon the Bread of God; here drink with thee the royal Wine of heaven; here would I lay aside each earthly load, here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven. I have no help but thine; nor do I need another arm save thine to lean upon; it is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; my strength is in thy might, thy might alone. Cantor Lord Jesus Christ, you were sent to heal the contrite. Have mercy on us. Kyrie Cantor Lord Jesus Christ, you came to call all sinners. Have mercy on us. Kyrie Cantor Lord Jesus Christ, you intercede for us at the right hand of the Father. Have mercy on us. Kyrie 15 4

The Collect for the First Sunday in Lent Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy Spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted of Satan: Make speed to help thy servants who are assaulted by manifold temptations; and, as thou knowest their several infirmities, let each one find thee mighty to save; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen....... The Liturgy of the Word....... All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to receive the real and living presence of Christ in this Holy Communion. To receive the Bread, extend your hands upward, palms crossed. When receiving the Wine, please guide the chalice as it is offered. If you prefer you may leave the Bread on your palm for the person administering the chalice to dip into the Wine and place on your tongue. Anyone may come forward for a blessing in lieu of Communion. Please indicate your desire for a blessing by crossing your arms on your chest. Women are encouraged to blot lipstick before receiving communion. Ushers will guide you from your pew. The rails are filled from the center front to the back. Once you receive, please return to your seat via the side aisle. If you would like prayer after you have received Communion, please see one of the Prayer Team members that can be found in either of the transepts. The First Lesson Genesis 9:8-17 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth. The Breaking of the Bread It is customary to omit Alleluia during the Lenten season. Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. The Prayer of Humble Access We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Invitation to Communion Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Fraction Anthem Agnus Dei Psalm 25:3-9 3 Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths. 4 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. 5 Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. 6 Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. 7 Gracious and upright is the Lord; therefore he teaches sinners in his way. 8 He guides the humble in doing right and teaches his way to the lowly. 9 All the paths of the Lord are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. The Second Lesson 1 Peter 3:18-22 18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved through water. 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 13 6

Sequence Hymn 150 Please stand Forty Days and Forty Nights For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me." Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; The Gospel Please remain standing Mark 1:9-13 13 Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark People Glory be to thee, O Lord. 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; 11 and a voice came from heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased. 12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ. 7 12

People It is meet and right so to do. Celebrant It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was in every way tempted as we are, yet did not sin; by whose grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer unto ourselves, but unto him who died for us and rose again. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and singing, The Sermon Please be seated The Nicene Creed Please stand We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
