Activity Report 2016-2017

The Universidad Politécnica de Tulancingo Student Chapter (UPT Chapter) was established on 18 October 2012 by students of the Optics Master program. The purpose of the Student Chapter is to promote optics inside and outside of the university. Moreover, we are also interested in the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts in optics, photonics and related fields, which greatly contribute to the development of our research projects. We think that, by sharing our experience with the optical sciences in our community, we may arouse the interest of new generations, let people know about relevant accomplishments, spread awareness of applications of optics, and promote the development of this area in our region. 2014-2015 Chapter Officers President: Edwin Lechuga-Salem Vice-President: Raúl Castro-Ortega Secretary: Laura Yesica Mera-González Treasurer: Martin Hernández-Romo Advisor: Alfonso Padilla-Vivanco edwinlechuga.s@hotmail.com raul.castro@upt.edu.mx laura_merag@hotmail.com martin.hernandez@upt.edu.mx alfonso.padilla@upt.edu.mx 2015-2016 Chapter Officers President: Román Díaz-Reyes Vice-President: Carlos D. At this meeting, we show people interested in the student chapter the benefits of belonging to the chapter, the activities that we have been performed and the future activities we have planned. With respect to recruitment, we talk with the new students in optical computing master's program about the benefits of being part of our student chapter. Page [4]

Khet 2.0 Workshop The members of the student chapter hold meetings to encourage and teach new members how to play the game. The meetings also encourage teamwork as well as the integration of the members in the chapter. Page [5]

SPIE Optics+Photonics 2016 The student chapter committee members, Osmond Zermeño, Alejandra Cárdenas and Julio A. Sarabia, attended Optics + Photonics 2016 organized by SPIE in San Diego (California). During the week they attended lectures and workshops, interacting and sharing experiences with students from more than 20 countries. The UPT student chapter participated in the Optics Outreach Games 2016 and presented the 2016 chapter activities poster. Page [6]

9 th International Research Congress Under the motto "Educar, Investigar e Innovar con Equidad de Género y Sin Discriminación", at the Universidad Politécnica de Tulancingo the 9th International Congress of Research was held last November, 2016. At that event, 35 Prototypes of Engineering, 10 Productive Bachelors Projects and 41 Scientific posters were presented. Being in this last activity where students of the Student Chapter of the UPT participated mainly exposing to the university community their progress master's thesis about different applications that optics has in different lines of research. Weekly Seminars At our university, a seminar is organized every week, in which graduate students have the opportunity to present current research and to receive feedback from the student chapter and faculty of the optics program. Page [7]

Science and Technology Week As part of the science and technology week that took place in Colegio México in Tulancingo, the student chapter attended with a series of events. We presented four lectures: two to high school students and two to elementary students. The issues were related to how optics helps in the fight against climate change. We also did experiments in which we demonstrated the nature and properties of light, all in a didactic way for elementary and high school students. Page [8]

Elementary School visit One of the fundamental purposes of the chapter is to bring knowledge of optics to the people of our region. We make visits to elementary schools and we talk about basic things that happen around us and are related to this science. Tulancingo elementary school At the primary school Tulancingo we gave a talk about basic optics, in which children learn why the sky is blue, how our eyes work to form the images that we see, how microscopes work and what characterizes the nature of light. We always make sure that these talks include animation and understandable language for children. Basic Optics Workshop at Colegio Antares As part of the student chapter activities, workshops are given at schools like Colegio Antares to show children the importance of science using games and educational tools in order to awaken their interest in science. Page [9]

National meeting of students Members of the Student Chapter of the Universidad Politécnica of Tulancingo attended the conferences organized by the student chapter of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Tonantzintla, municipality of San Andrés Cholula (Puebla, Mexico). Lectures were given by specialists in the field of optics. In addition, members had a guided tour of the institute's facilities and were able to observe various experiments related to optics produced there. During the tour, the members also got to visit the observatory which houses the well-known Solar Telescope. Page [10]

Guided Tours OF the laboratory Students in Industrial Engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico Superior of Huauchinango (ITSH) visited the Laboratory of Optics and Computational Vision of the Universidad Politécnica of Tulancingo (UPT), where optical metrology practices were demonstrated and a basic Khet 2.0 workshop was offered. There were also some demonstrations of the diffraction of light and fluorescence using simple household products. Page [11]

Tell me about Science The chapter alumni gives talks in which we talk about any scientist interest topic, our speakers are people who wants share their knowledge. In these talks, the public contributed ideas and acquired new knowledge and an interest in science in a more entertaining way. We hold this event each Monday at 4 o clock at the auditorium of the Universidad Politécnica of Tulancingo. Social Network Diffusion To promote optics in social networks, we use a Facebook page, in which all the activities and photos of the events are published. Page [12]
