FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear friends in Christ, Pope Francis speaks of the central message of Jesus: Jesus preaches: The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand ; then He exhorts: repent, and believe in the Gospel (v. 15), that is, believe in this Good News that the Kingdom of God is at hand. In our life, we are always in need of conversion every day!, and the Church makes us pray for this. In fact, we are never sufficiently oriented to God and we must constantly direct our mind and heart to Him. To do this, it s necessary to have the courage to reject all that leads us outside the way, the false values that deceive us, attracting our egoism in a sly way. Instead, we must trust the Lord, His goodness and His plan of love for each one of us. Lent is a time of penance, yes, but it s not a sad time, of mourning. It s a joyful and serious commitment to strip ourselves of our egoism, of the old man in us, and of renewing ourselves according to the grace of our Baptism. God alone can give us true happiness: it s useless for us to waste time seeking it elsewhere, in riches, in pleasures, in power, in a career... The Kingdom of God is the realization of all our aspirations because it is, at the same time, salvation of man and glory of God. We are invited to listen attentively and to take up this appeal of Jesus to convert ourselves and to believe in the Gospel. We are exhorted to undertake with commitment the path to Easter, to receive ever more the grace of God, who wants to transform the world into a kingdom of justice, of peace and of fraternity. POPE FRANCIS A great way to concentrate on this central message of the Lord is by participating in the Mission at St. Jude which begins next week. The sessions are March 5-7 Mornings at 9am and Evenings at 7pm, take your pick. Fr. Tim Sauer will be preaching on the Lord and his call to us. Please see the flyer in the bulletin for more information and plan to attend. Blessings on your week! Fr. Johnson PARISH MISSION March 3-7 Fr. Tim Sauer, senior priest and noted preacher will be preaching our parish mission. Join us in welcoming him after the Saturday and Sunday Masses in the Parish Hall. His Retreat Presentations will be on - Monday, March 5, Tuesday, March 6, and Wednesday, March 7 after the 9AM and 7PM Masses. Refreshments and fellowship will be in the narthex between the Mass and his presentations. Help is needed with hospitality for the parish mission. Please contact Sondra at sondra@stjude-redmond.org if you can help. -2-

Office hours are 8:30-4:30 Monday thru Friday. Dear St. Jude Parishioners, I am so excited for our Faces of Hope events this year and hope that you can join me at either the luncheon OR the evening reception at Overlake Golf & Country Club in Bellevue. 2018 marks 30 years of support for NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos) here in the Northwest. The children who came to NPH 30 years ago, today are parents to children of their own, hardworking pillars of their communities, and more than 300 are university graduates. Many are business owners, directors of NPH programs, and professionals in their fields. The commitment that NPH makes to each child is only possible because of the continued support that we are celebrating this year in the Northwest. Originally from the Oregon, Raul and Megan Gomez, will be joining us at Faces of Hope from NPH Honduras to share with us the exceptional care the youngest children receive, ensuring a healthier, happier future. These children, who with our committed and lasting support, can faithfully dream of what they can become in the next 30 years. To respect those who may be observing traditional Lenten practices, we will be serving a salmon niçoise salad or a vegetarian niçoise salad at the luncheon on March 23 at Overlake Golf and Country Club. Please let me know if you are able to join me as my guest, (no cost to you) and learn more about how NPH transforms the future for thousands of vulnerable children. Please contact me by email: dmarymc@hotmail.com or phone :425-785-0485-3-

SOCIAL JUSTICE TRANSFIGURAION: Seeing in a new way The Transfiguration is a sign of great hope. It is possible to see the presence of God in Jesus. It is possible to see things in a new way. In the midst of war and violence, the gospel invites us to see the presence of God and to hear God s invitation to peace. In the midst of poverty and injustice, the gospel invites us to hear God s invitation to respect the dignity of every human person and the need for justice for all people. In the midst of economic injustice and inequality, the gospel invites us to focus on those values that are really most important and to focus on something bigger than ourselves. It is possible to see God in others. It is possible to let go of racism, to let go of an addiction to money, to let go of power and control, to let go of violence, to let go of inaction, to let go of our blindness and selfishness. It is even possible to let go of the religious experience on the mountain and come down and find God in all things and all people. It is possible to see the world as a global community and to see all people as our brothers and sisters. SAFE PARKING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are in need of more volunteers who are willing to share their gift of hospitality with those who are part of our safe parking program. The commitment is at least once a month from 6:00-7:00 pm or 7:00-8:00 pm. Many of our residents appreciate when someone has time to be a welcoming presence, to listen to them as they share about their day and more importantly to reassure them that someone cares about them. Training is provided and for more information contact Sr. Betty. CHOOSING THE PATH OF PEACE: Remembering All Those Who Lost Their Lives to Gun Violence We pray in the spirit of the Psalms: We are in distress, we are in anguish. Our tears are bitter as once again The lives you have created Are disrespected, destroyed, Because of fear, of hate, of refusal To see the others as part of oneself, Because weapons are more common Than compassion, than solidarity. We pray for those who have died For their families and friends in grief. We pray for the living May the healing begin, For the wounded, For the local communities, For this nation, In distress, in anguish. We pray that we may begin To see the violence end And peace be with us all. Amen. PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE Making a preferential option for the poor is a way of following the example of Jesus. It is an option in the sense of being a conscious choice to be in solidarity with those who are poor, marginalized or disrespected, and to work for structural change to transform the causes of poverty and marginalization. Our preferential option for the poor is a core commitment it is not optional! It is preferential because through this option we give preference or priority in our love to those who are poor. It calls all of us to right relationships, and it does this by placing those in greatest need at the center. -4-
