Introduction Greetings from the Pastor, The Broadview Missionary Baptist Church Christian Education Curriculum Guide provides a wellrounded Christ-centered, chronological, age aligned curriculum with a missional focus and based on the foundational doctrines of the Christian faith. The King James Bible and New King James Bible are the primary sources used for biblical studies at BMBC. We recognize the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, the inerrant and infallible Word of God, as our authority in matters of faith and practice. Our understanding of Christian truth as contained therein is in essential accord with the belief of the Baptist Church as indicated in the Baptist Faith and Message. The Curriculum Guide is aligned to the BMBC Strategic Plan 2020, Goal Area IV Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. Goal Statement IV-A: Curriculum, provides that: Broadview Missionary Baptist Church will develop a well-rounded Foundational Doctrines curriculum founded on the doctrinal truths of the Holy Scripture and fully implemented by 2020. The Christian Education Curriculum Guide developed for Bible study classes at BMBC beginning Fall 2017 thru Summer 2020 will be published annually. The guide includes the curriculum rationale, core values, essential doctrines, annual calendars, course descriptions, study plans, and classes offered by BMBC for a given year. Life application classes with a missional focus will be offered for students of all ages. The classes are designed to challenge students in a chronological study of God s Word on various themes or a book by book journey through the Bible. Classes will be offered Sunday morning, Tuesday afternoon and evening, and in our new Small Group initiative (off-site Bible studies hosted by BMBC members). I would like to thank the Curriculum Development Task Force for developing the BMBC Christian Education Curriculum Guide and all of our faithful members who make our Christian Education program possible. We encourage members, families, friend, and guests to take full advantage of the Bible studies offered at Broadview Missionary Baptist Church. Love, Your Pastor Marvin G. Parker 1

Introduction A Message from the Assistant Pastor/Christian Education Director, The primary purpose of the Christian Education program, here at Broadview Missionary Baptist Church, is to acquaint people with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of God tells us to Study to show thyself approved unto God, a worker that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. It is through the study of the Word of God that we come to know God as a loving Savior. Therefore, the mission of Broadview Missionary Baptist Church is to train our membership to love God and all people, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. By providing direction for victorious living, Christian Education addresses the biblical doctrines and principles that shape and influence daily life applications as well as our worldview. Christian Education affirms that one s spiritual journey is a lifelong process, experienced individually and as a member of the church family. Broadview s Christian Education classes are tailored to meet the needs of the whole church community through the various stages of life: children, teens and adults; new converts and the spiritually mature; individuals and families; Christians and non-christians. The Christian Education curriculum emphasizes the urgency and beauty of Jesus message. The only requirement for attending Christian Education classes is a desire to learn about God. Christian Education classes are essential whether beginning or advancing on our spiritual journey. We each have a built-in need to know and grow closer to God our Creator. We build this relationship with Him through studying His Word and spending time with Him. This awesome bond with God is strengthened as we grow in knowledge and trust of Him. The Bible addresses every need, concern, situation and stage of life. Through Christian Education classes we come to appreciate how He is working in our lives. Our faith and spiritual maturity increase. We are also encouraged and blessed by getting to know other church members. You are invited to participate in the rewarding Christian Education experience of prayer, Bible study, fellowship and sharing of testimonies. The BMBC Christian Education Curriculum Guide offers a variety of classes that will provide direction for victorious living and keep you grounded in foundational doctrines of the Christian faith. Feel free to bring a guest to class; members and non-members are welcome. Sincerely, Christopher C. Robinson, Sr. Assistant Pastor/Christian Education Director 3

Background Vision Our Future The vision of Broadview Missionary Baptist Church is to go to the ends of the earth for the Lord Jesus Christ. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 Mission Our Core Purpose The mission of Broadview Missionary Baptist Church is to train our membership to love God and all people and make disciples of Jesus Christ. If someone says. I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 1 John 4:20 Core Ideology We Believe Broadview Missionary Baptist Church recognizes the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, the inerrant and infallible Word of God, as its authority in matters of faith and practice. Its understanding of Christian truth as contained therein is in essential accord with the belief of the Baptist Church as indicated in the Baptist Faith and Message. Primary Sources for Biblical Studies The King James Bible and New King James Bible are the primary sources for biblical studies at BMBC. The use of these primary sources is emphasized and methodologies provided for teachers to enhance the learning experience with the Bible versions cited by LifeWay Christian Resources or other publishers. BMBC Strategic Plan 2020 Goal Statement IV A Curriculum Broadview Missionary Baptist Church will develop a well-rounded Foundational Doctrines curriculum founded on the doctrinal truths of the Holy Scripture and fully implemented by 2020. 4

Goal IV A Curriculum: Performance Objectives Background 1. Develop a well-rounded foundational doctrinal curriculum for yearly dissemination. 2. Restructure the new members class to teach foundational doctrines. 3. Develop and implement a practical foundational curriculum for Youth and Young Adults. 4. Identify and establish more topics for life application. 5. Provide some foundational classes focusing on practical life applications. Christian Education Curriculum Rationale The Christian Education Curriculum encourages congregations to engage in teaching all that Christ commands (Matthew 28:20), in every situation. Christian Education is reflective of God s process of information and transformation. The goal is that Christ s disciples receive Christ s mind (1 Corinthians 2:16). Christ calls this discipleship. This is a supernatural process. It requires lifelong learning. It develops the faith that is required to please God (Hebrews 11:6). A proper Christian curriculum will aim at passing on the faith that was once delivered to the saints. The process of educating in the faith is an experience rich with nurturing and blessings. Core Values for Christian Education Curriculum Broadview Missionary Baptist Church has adopted the core values listed below for its Christian Education Curriculum and will utilize Bible Study materials where these core values are evident for all Christian Education classes offered by the church. 1. Christ centered Study that helps participants understand how all Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, gives testimony to Jesus Christ. 2. Chronological Study Plan that shows how the Bible is not just a collection of stories, but one unified story God s story of redemption. 3. Age Alignment for purposes of building a church-wide discipleship experience and equip parents to lead spiritual conversations in the home. 4. Missional Application that examines how the gospel encourages and empowers us to be mission driven. 5. Essential Doctrines that help participants grasp the theological truths and central themes of the Christian faith. Life and Missional Application In-service training will be provided for teachers to develop instructional strategies to assist students with practical life and missional application. Teachers will incorporate life and missional application for students as primary objectives in their lesson plans and afford students opportunities for reflection and discussion of these issues during class time. 5

Discipleship Training Multiple discipleship training opportunities are offered at BMBC for students of all ages to learn about Jesus Christ and understand the doctrinal truths found in the Bible through the study of God s Word. These Bible studies are designed to challenge students in a chronological study of God s Word on various themes and books of the Bible. Discipleship Training classes are provided at BMBC on Sunday morning, Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday evening and in off-site Small Groups. Foundational Tenets of Christian Discipleship Listed below are some core foundations of biblical discipleship. Though not exhaustive, this list highlights what Scripture teaches about what it means to be a follower of Christ. 1. Christian discipleship is the ongoing transformation of an individual becoming like Jesus in character and purpose as he grows in intimacy with Him (see Matt. 5:48; Eph. 4:13-15; Phil. 2:5). 2. Christian discipleship addresses every dimension of life. It is concerned not only with doing the right thing in every circumstance but also with doing the right thing for the right reason (see Phil. 1:27). 3. Christian discipleship is progressive in nature. When someone stops growing in intimacy with Christ, he ceases to be healthy in his discipleship (see John 15:4). 4. Christian discipleship is a work of grace. It is the Holy Spirit who transforms life, not someone who tries to be good. The term disciplined grace describes this process. While God transforms, a believer s spiritual practice creates the transforming environment in which the Holy Spirit works (see Phil. 2:13; 1 Tim. 4: 7-8). 5. Christian discipleship always manifests itself in ministry to others. Every Christian has been spiritually gifted for the purpose of service (see 1 Pet. 4:10). 6. Christian discipleship was intended by Christ to be reproductive. Those who follow Jesus life and teaching will be prepared to eagerly share their faith experiences and to invest themselves in the spiritual nurture of others (see Matt. 28:18-20; 2 Tim. 2:2). 7. Christian discipleship is centered in the life of a local church, where the fellowship of other disciples encourages, teaches, and safeguards the believer s discipleship process (see Heb. 10:24-26). How do we define discipleship? A disciple is someone who has believed the message of the gospel, responded to the call of God in repentant faith, been baptized and, through the power of the Holy Spirit, is seeking to understand and obey all that Jesus commands. 6

Foundational Christian Doctrines The Foundational Christian Doctrines serve to show how Christian theology is woven into God s big story of redemption through Jesus Christ and to teach the basics of Christian faith in simple summary statements. BMBC teachers are required to demonstrate a working knowledge of these 99 essential doctrines and teach the basics of the Christian faith. Students enrolled in BMBC Discipleship Training classes will be able to articulate their knowledge and understanding of these essential doctrines and the basics of Christian faith. The Gospel Project will take students on a chronological, Christ-centered journey through the storyline of Scripture. Participants will encounter God's plan of redemption in Scripture through the study of Bible narrative, the essential doctrines of the faith, and the call to join in God's mission locally and globally. The Theological Theme for each session helps to keep each story in Scripture in the context of the whole of Scripture. Features of The Gospel Project Christ-centered: Each session points to Christ as the Hero of the story and shows how the gospel transforms hearts and applies to every area of life. Chronological: 3-year cycle from Genesis to Revelation. 3 year study plan: 18 months in Old Testament and 18 months in New Testament. (Luke 24:44) The chronological storyline of Scripture reflected in The Gospel Project provides a framework for understanding all the parts of God s grand story of redemption. The Christ Connection in each session clarifies how the individual stories of Scripture either point forward or backward to the center point that gives them all meaning the person and work of Jesus Christ. Mission: The Gospel Project will help God s people follow in the steps of our missionary God. (John 20:21) The Missional Application statement shows how the story of God s redemptive work directly affects our missional mind-set. COURSE: Explore the Bible (1-3 Year Bible Study) Adults (Print and ebook) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Explore the Bible is a book-by-book Bible study for Adults. That is why Explore the Bible will allow class participants to dig deep into the biblical, cultural, and archaeological context of Scripture, utilizing every trustworthy tool available to help gain understanding of the original intent of each passage. Study all Scripture: Every book in the Bible is the inspired Word of God. Because every book matters, Explore the Bible will allow students to dig into every book. Understand the text in its context: Every passage of Scripture has a context that illuminates its original intent. In order to have the most complete understanding of Scripture, we must understand the historical and cultural factors that influenced Scripture as it was written, as well as how it fits into Scripture as a whole. Develop a deeper knowledge of Scripture: In a culture grasping for any truth, it is more important we know God's Truth than ever before. Explore the Bible is committed to helping students develop a deeper knowledge of the Bible, what it tells us about God, and what He is asking us to do. 11

Course Descriptions Discover the world of the Bible: Essential to our knowledge of Scripture is the reality that it actually happened. Explore the Bible presents archaeological evidence to illuminate the very real people, places, and events in the Bible. Apply Scriptural truths every day: The Bible is not just something that happened; it is a living text that still speaks, inspires, and compels us today. That is why Explore the Bible is committed to helping students both know and live the Word of God. COURSE: The Discipleship Path Series The Journey: Volume1 (1 Year Bible Study) Adults and Young Adults (Print and ebook) Day: TBA Location: TBA Time: TBA Duration: 8 Week Quarters COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Journey is a one-year intentional plan for discipleship accomplished in Small Groups. Small Group participants will be striving toward spiritual maturity in Jesus Christ. The disciple s path is designed to develop discipline and what happens between each small group session is critically important to the spiritual growth of each participant. Those being discipled will be taught how to observe that is to do what is commanded in Scripture. The greatest growth takes place when a disciple does what is commanded in Scripture, not just learns what Scripture says. The goal of every disciple-maker should be that the person who has been discipled then uses the series to disciple someone else. Vacation Bible School VBS Program Description: Summer Program July/August (2 weeks for All Ages) Adults, Young Adults, Youth, Children, and Nursery Day: Monday thru Friday Location: BMBC Time: 12:30 P.M. 2:00 P.M. 6:30 P.M. 8:30 P.M. Vacation Bible School (VBS) is one of the greatest and most important outreach events in the life of Broadview Missionary Baptist Church (BMBC). VBS is a concentrated two week Bible study during the summer last week of July and first week of August. The objectives include reaching the unsaved and unchurched, especially children and youth, as well as enhancing the spiritual level of the church membership. Bible lessons are based on a specific theme that is usually evangelistic with a goal of encouraging the unsaved to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. The successful promotion and implementation of VBS can have positive long term effects, as well as immediate results. The potential results: evangelism, Bible teaching, discovery of workers, increased morale, and opportunity for fellowship. VBS provides sound, relevant Bible study that enables people to experience and respond to the gospel message in ways that are appropriate for them. Everything that happens during a day of VBS grows out of the biblical content and emphasis of that day. VBS leads preschoolers, children, youth, and adults to study the same biblical content, when appropriate. VBS is an entry point to church and Christianity for many people, so it is designed to be comfortable, enjoyable, and appealing. VBS gives BMBC and its members the opportunity to develop long term Christ like relationships with people who attend. The Primary Components of VBS are: Bible study, worship, crafts, music, missions, recreation, and refreshments. Each age group may adapt these elements. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLES: VBS is centered on a theme that permeates content, methodology, and the learning environment, creating an experience totally distinct from Sunday school. VBS requires user-friendly, easy-to-prepare, and easy-to-use materials that help teachers lead effective, meaningful learning experiences, and establish relationships with learners. VBS provides challenging experiences designed to stimulate spiritual growth for churched people and create wonderful opportunities to introduce Jesus Christ to the unchurched. 13
