LESSON 12 Joshua 11 FIRST DAY: Introduction It s true, more often than not, that our first response to trials, testings, and attack is condemnation. Rather than trusting we are in the will of God, we begin to question the love of God and His plans for us. First Peter 4:12 speaks to this dilemma, Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you. Opposition and attack are often tactics of the devil when he sees us growing in Christ and learning to take possession of the promises of God. However, what Satan means for evil, God will use for our good and His glory! This truth is vividly portrayed before us in Joshua 11. As the Israelites began to take possession of the land God promised them, they were attacked by one degenerate kingdom after another. In each attack, God not only gave Israel the victory over their enemies, but used the attacks to give them territory, homes, and livestock. In your life do not fear the attack, but give every trial to God for His glory and your spiritual gain! Take a moment to give God the trials and testings of your life. SECOND DAY: Read Joshua 11:1 6 1. As the Lord gave Israel continued victory in southern Canaan, the news eventually reached the northern Canaanite kingdoms. Consequently, Jabin king of Hazor called these kingdoms to battle when he heard these things (Joshua 11:1a). Recall from Joshua 10:40 42 what Jabin must have heard. 141

JOSHUA 2. Use Joshua 11:1b 5 to detail and remark on what you learn about the following: a. The kingdoms Jabin sent to (verses 1b 3) (1) What does his action convey to you about the enemy? b. The size of the enemy armies (verse 4) c. Their encampment (verse 5) (1) Consider for a moment what Israel might have felt in learning about such a large force. (2) Compare this scene with Joshua 9:1 2 and 10:1 5. What do you see? 3. As Joshua faced a new legion of enemies, the Lord spoke to him. Use Joshua 11:6 to note and comment on: a. God s encouragement (verse 6a) 142

LESSON 12 b. God s promise (verse 6b) c. God s charge (verse 6c) 4. Observe that as the Israelites continued their conquest of the Promised Land, the battles intensified. How does this speak to you about the life of faith? THIRD DAY: Read Joshua 11:7 11 1. Joshua 11:7 9 details Israel s battle against the kingdoms of northern Canaan. Use these verses to describe and comment on: a. The attack (verse 7) (1) Link this with Joshua 10:9. What do you see? b. The deliverance (verse 8a) 143

JOSHUA c. The victory (verses 8b 9) (1) The command to hamstring the horses and burn the enemy s chariots was due to the fact that Israel might have been tempted to rely on the captured armory. Link this with Psalm 20:7 and share your thoughts. (2) Use Deuteronomy 20:1 to ascertain the attitude Israel was to have toward horses and chariots. 2. Read about the defeat of Hazor in Joshua 11:10 11 and choose a few words to describe its destruction. a. Because Hazor was head of all those kingdoms, why do you think its destruction was especially significant? b. Hazor was burned with fire as a monument for Israel of God s promise of victory. What things have been burned in your life as a monument to victory? See also Romans 13:14. 144

3. From your study today, share a lesson you received through: a. Joshua s obedience LESSON 12 b. God s faithfulness FOURTH DAY: Read Joshua 11:12 15 1. Use Joshua 11:12 14 to summarize Joshua s victories in northern Canaan. a. Notice the utter destruction of these cities. Link this with Deuteronomy 20:16 18 to comment on the necessity of this. b. According to Joshua 11:14, what was Israel allowed to take for themselves? 145

JOSHUA (1) How is this a fulfillment of God s Word in Deuteronomy 6:10 11? 2. Note Joshua s actions in Joshua 11:15. Use the following Scriptures to emphasize the importance of leaving nothing undone in our obedience to the Lord: a. Deuteronomy 5:33 b. 1 Samuel 15:22 c. Jeremiah 7:23 (1) Cite a specific area of your life in which you desire to obey the Lord. 3. Write a reason why complete obedience to God is necessary for spiritual victory. 146

LESSON 12 FIFTH DAY: Read Joshua 11:16 23 1. The Scripture tells us that Joshua took all this land. Using Joshua 11:16 17a and the following map, circle all this land: a. All the South (The Land of Goshen) f. The Ascent to Seir b. The Lowland g. Baal Gad c. The Jordan Plain h. The Valley of Lebanon d. The Mountains of Israel / Its Lowlands i. Mount Hermon e. Mount Halak 147

JOSHUA 2. Joshua 11:17b 18 reveals that possession of the land was progressive. Commentators estimate a long time denotes a period of five years. What does this convey to you spiritually about possessing God s promises? 3. What do you find interesting about the fact that Gibeon was the only city that made peace with Israel? Joshua 11:19 4. Joshua 11:20 explains why no other city made peace with Israel. Use this verse to note and comment on: a. The Canaanites hearts b. God s purpose 5. From Joshua 11:21 22, document Joshua s destruction of the Anakim. a. David Guzik notes that the Anakim were exceptionally large and strong people that had made Israel too afraid to enter the land some forty years ago (Numbers 13:33). 5 Why do you think Israel was now able to defeat them? 148

6. From Joshua 11:23, list the results of Joshua s obedience. LESSON 12 a. How does this minister to you? SIXTH DAY: Review 1. From your study this week in Joshua 11, note and comment on the obedience of Joshua in the following verses: a. Verse 9 b. Verse 12 c. Verse 15 d. Verse 23 2. What link do you see between obedience and possessing the promises of God? 149 2017 Calvary Chapel Women s Ministries 3800 S. Fairview Rd., Santa Ana, CA 92704. http://women.cccm.com
