April 8, 2018 Sunday of Divine Mercy We hear in today s Gospel the first appearance of Jesus, The Risen Lord, to His apostles on the first Easter Night. Although all the doors and windows of the upper room (where they had the Last Supper) were closed, The Risen Lord passed through and appeared to them. The Apostles may have feared what Jesus would say to them because they had run away when He needed them. Peter had even denied knowing Him three times. But Jesus said Shalom - peace be with you. He forgave their sins and then sent the Holy Spirit upon them and empowered them to bring forgiveness to others. Thomas the Apostle was not there for that first appearance. When the others told Thomas, he said he would not believe until he put his fingers into the nail marks and his hand into his side. On the Sunday after Easter, Jesus again appeared to the Apostles and immediately called Thomas to come and touch His Risen Body. Thomas and we make our act of faith and love: My Lord and My God! Please pray for those preparing to receive the Risen Christ in First Communion and for those preparing to receive the Holy Spirit in Confirmation. Our prayers are with you that your minds and hearts may be opened to the Lord. DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET TODAY, Sunday, April 8, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy will be prayed in the church from 10:15am to 10:30am. Join us in celebration and recognition of our Lord s greatest gift His Mercy. Many THANKS to Fr. William who has celebrated so many 7 am Masses (daily and Sunday) for a number of years. Our prayers and good wishes go with him as he continues priestly ministry in northern New York. Since Fr. William has left our area and since it is becoming more difficult to find priests to help our parish and since the number of folks attending 7am daily Mass has declined, we will no longer have 7am Mass celebrated on Monday and Wednesday. Holy Rosary has 7am Mass on these days. IHM has 6:30am daily Mass every day. 2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Disciples of Christ, Witnesses of Faith The 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal will be conducted in parishes throughout the diocese next weekend. Once a year, Our Bishop asks each of us to make a commitment to support the work of diocesan programs and ministries that provide services that no one parish can offer on its own. You gift helps bring Christ to those who seek His presence-the poor, the sick, the distressed, our children and our elderly. As parishioners of St. Helena s, we are proud to be part of the Church of Wilmington. As members of the diocese, it is important of each of us to serve others by sharing our resources. Just as we are one in Christ, we are also one with other parishes and with our diocese. Our parish target is $62,000. Your financial support of the Appeal also provides funding for our parish since monies collected above our target will be returned for our own ministry needs. Please give prayerful consideration to you resources and the needs of those served by the Appeal. Kindly decide ahead of time the contribution you wish to make this year and come to church next week prepared to complete your pledge to offer your support. PLEASE HELP US! Our Finance Council is very concerned that many parishioners may not realize the serious financial situation of our parish. We are running a deficit of about $40,000. Last year we appealed for folks to increase their giving in the Offertory Collection. The initial response was encouraging but seems to have dropped off. In order to cut costs we will soon be closing our Convent building. We need some folks who will help bring the Eucharist to the sick at home or nursing homes. If you are willing to be prepared for this ministry, please call the Rectory. The Offertory Collection for the weekend of 3/25 was $5,590.00 and the on-line collection was $1,537.50 for a total of $7,127.50. Thank you! Page 1 311

I am not sure if people know the impact Kathy Quinn has had on parish life. For 28 years she served in whatever capacity was needed! She was a faithful and devoted secretary of the Religious Education Office for many years, but then was asked to split time to help St. Helena s School when they needed a receptionist. After sharing those two positions, she was again asked to relocate to the rectory to take over the parish calendar and weekly bulletin along with other duties. Few people can bounce around as much as Kathy did and still manage a smile! True to her nature, Kathy is retiring from working for St. Helena s Parish BUT she will continue to serve St. Helena s in all of her volunteer endeavors (baking cakes). So when you see Kathy around the campus or in the Church, please thank her for everything she has done for us and wish she and Randy a Fun-Filled RETIREMENT! Good Luck Kathy (but I will NOT say good-bye)! Hummy Page 2 311

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY There are six key principles of Catholic social teaching. Each week there will be a synopsis of each principle. **Dignity of the Human Person: all people are reflection of the image of God, and thus all human life, at all stages from conception through death, is sacred. The basic dignity that each person possesses comes from God: therefore, all discrimination is wrong. People take precedence over things and structures. Systems are meant to serve people, not vice versa. Blessings upon the Knights of Columbus Christopher Council for their generous donation to St. Helena s Parish Social Ministry.
