I have to say that I don t have good associations with this month. Two of my uncles died from heart attacks in August, both outside in the oppressive heat one on the golf course and another on a New York sidewalk. My nephew, Alex, is born in August, and the family had his 2 nd birthday at my parents house. The party was very special to us as he was born while my sister and her husband were living abroad so we had not been present for either his baptism or first birthday. I was in charge of picking up the cake that Sunday morning (I had not yet entered the seminary so I was un-indentured). It was beautiful. We ordered it from St. Moritz, our very favorite bakery (it was quality in those days), but it was located in Greenwich at least a 20 minute ride. The cake was topped with a clown made out of frosting. So cute! I drove that cake home with the air blasting on high on that 90 degree day and still before my eyes I saw that colorful clown sliding and sliding. Please, I prayed, don t let it melt. He was a little worse for the wear by the time he reached our refrigerator. I am not a fan of August. I am a fan, however, of our Parish Family Picnic which takes place in August. Tickets go on sale today in the vestibule. We had a great turn out last year, and the afternoon was very successful. We are building on that success this year. We will have the traditional picnic foods of hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausage, and, in addition, members of the Latino community will once again prepare tasty dishes of chicken and pork, etc. They were very popular with everyone last year and so we are offering them again. There will be ice cream and sweets for dessert. Sodas and waters will be provided, but beer and wine will be available for purchase through the courtesy of the Vespucci Lodge. We will have an inflatable playground with slides for the kids, but no water as I incorrectly stated in a previous column. I was asked if I might offer Mass at noon at the site for everyone so that you could make one stop that day. I asked, in return, if I could cancel the noon Mass at church! But, the consensus was that to do so would likely cause confusion and people would invariably show up and be perplexed and upset. I will offer Mass at the venue and encourage picnic goers to celebrate the Liturgy under the pavilion. If it is August, it is time for the Dominican Sisters of West Hartford to be here to sell their pies, brownies, and breads. They have been coming for so many years that they hardly need introduction. But, should you be new to the parish, the Sisters operate health clinics and provide home visits to the poor primarily in Southeast Asia. One of the health issues they treat, believe it or not, is leprosy. The sisters here raise money to carry out their mission through their bake sales at parishes. We found a lovely ring on the floor of the church two weeks ago. It looks to me to be antique. If you are missing a ring, it may be yours. Let me know.
Finally, this weekend is the Italian Festival at the Vespucci Lodge. The Lodge goes out its way to assist us with the picnic, including waiving the charge for using their facility. You might like to go the festival, and while you are there identify yourself as a St. Peter s parishioner, telling them we are grateful for their goodness to us. -Fr. Mecca THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD We offer our condolences to the family of Rita Ginty who passed away last week. the 9:00 a.m. Mass.
