Lesson 3 FBC BELLVILLE STARTUP PREP Each lesson in this Texas Missions for Kids curriculum volume tells the story of how one church is being the salt of the earth and the light of the world in response to Christ s Sermon on the Mount as found in Matthew 5. Each week prepare your heart for ministry by reading the Beatitudes and following verses as recorded in Mathew 5:1-20. The Bible verse for this unit is Matthew 5:16. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 Each couple of lessons will also have a separate focal Bible verse to help the boys and girls in your church learn ways to minister as they focus on ministry throughout Texas and respond to the Word of God in their own lives. 1 SOUTHERN BAPTISTS OF TEXAS CONVENTION

(If no one knows, give them hints as to where it is located (between Austin and Houston). 3 Ask students to put pushpins or use painter s tape to affix a star on your city and Bellville. Teachers, you can attach the yarn or string from your town to the different cities. For older children, allow a child to attach the yarn length to the map. SAY Say, Let s begin learning about a special ministry in Bellville, Texas, which uses a unique way to find new people with whom they can share Jesus. 4 Ask if anyone has ever been to Bellville before. Ask the best way to get there from where you are. car, train, plane? Be prepared to tell how far and how long it takes to drive to these different cities. 3 SOUTHERN BAPTISTS OF TEXAS CONVENTION

Focal Bible Verse Let us love not with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 MISSIONS STORY (Play the lesson video: The video introduces the Texas Missions story for the day. It is not intended to tell the full story) Bellville is a small Texas town located between Austin and Houston. Like many towns, Bellville has a First Baptist Church, which has a sanctuary with pews, an organ and piano. Outside they have trees, a playground and a half-pipe! That s right, a half-pipe for skateboarders (refer to the halfpipe in the video). Not too long ago John Barnard, the youth pastor at the church, saw two young men sitting on the curb of the church parking lot with their skateboards under their feet. He went over and introduced himself as the youth pastor and also as the owner of a skateboard company, Middleman Skateboards. The boys were so surprised! They thought the pastor was going to tell them they could not skate on church property! They were so amazed that instead of being asked to leave they were shown skateboard designs and given skateboard t-shirts. By giving skate equipment to the boys, Pastor Barnard was able to share that since God has freely given life to him, it was his desire to share Christ with them freely and give them a chance to respond to God s desire for them to accept Christ as their personal Savior. The skate ramp built by FBC Bellville is a place where kids from the community can skate for free. Adults who have a love of skateboarding and sharing Jesus go out in the neighborhood and local schools to invite kids to skate at the church. One summer the church held a skate camp and 12 students accepted Christ as their Savior through that ministry. Those boys who thought they were going to be kicked off church property for skateboarding now attend First Baptist on Wednesday nights for Bible study and have new friends and skate buddies. Skateboarding might not be one of your hobbies, but let s think of different things we all do that might be opportunities to make new friends and invite people to church and more importantly, invite people to trust Jesus as their Savior. 4 SOUTHERN BAPTISTS OF TEXAS CONVENTION

Focal Bible Verse Let us love not with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 MISSIONS ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE TO PRAY FOR... 1 Pastor Barnard and the members of FBC Bellville as they share Jesus with the students in their neighborhood 2 The people in Bellville who need to hear about Jesus love for them 3 The students at FBC who are working to make the new friends from the skate park feel welcome at FBC during their Bible studies, Sunday activities and at school during the week 4 Ourselves as we think of different ways to share Jesus in our own neighborhoods and schools 5 To learn our focal verse for this unit, 1 John 3:18 Do activity one to accomplish the objectives and activity two to review the first three lessons. Add activity three if time allows. SUPPLIES NEEDED: PRINTED SIGNS Unit theme verse, Matthew 5:16 Focal Bible verse, 1 John 3:18 Pastor Barnard MiddleMan skate logo Allergy alert NEEDED Christian-themed stickers Washable markers Colored pencils Scissors Bibles Optional: paint & glitter pens, puff paint, stickers Deck patterns on colored cardstock (one per student) Roll of adhesive magnets Lunch sack or other bag Optional: skateboard Snack: crackers & sugar-free lemonade ACTIVITY 1 ALL DECKED OUT! Focal Bible Verse Let us love not with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 MISSIONS ACTIVITY ACTIVITY 1 ALL DECKED OUT! A skateboard deck is the actual piece of wood (usually oval or rectangular) the skateboarder stands on. The decks usually have graphics on them related to the company which makes the skateboard, and individual riders often add their own stickers to their decks to show their personalities and interests. Show the students a sample skateboard if you have any available and/or you can show them samples from Pastor Barnard s business Instagram page. Pastor Barnard uses pictures which express a specific truth of God s love for us. He says, We create pieces to be bold yet still need some explanation to get the full meaning. Tell the children to imagine themselves as designers for the next Middleman Skateboard deck. They can work individually or in groups, depending on the makeup of your class. Give each student a deck pattern and ask them to draw their own God-focused artwork. Make sure they include their names since that is what the pro riders do. Students should feel free to use today s verse and Middleman logo as either the top or underside of their board. For younger students you can provide copies of the ABCs of becoming a Christian. Provide stickers of nature, appropriate religious themes, families, church, etc. Also provide washable markers in different sizes and colored pencils for the students to use as they create their designs. For older students, if you have access to computers or ipads with design software, you can supervise them as they create designs. When their designs are complete, you can print them, or email to them to print at home. If you do not have access to electronic design, provide a variety of design materials such as paint pens, puff paint, glitter pens, glue and glitter, metallic stickers and a variety of colors of card stock (neon preferable) from which they can cut out different shapes and designs to glue on their decks. Let the students affix small sticky magnets to the back so they can display their designs on something at home or inside their lockers at school as a reminder to pray for God to provide opportunities to share Jesus with their friends. OPTIONAL Let students design t-shirt logos on either cardstock or actual t-shirts. The idea is to make a design which shares the love of God in a way that will invite their friends to ask what the design means and provide the student with an opportunity to share about Jesus. Further still, if your city has school banners or billboards, the students could design something along those lines. When students complete their designs, gather all the students together and let anyone who is willing show and explain his or her design to the group. Emphasize the aspect of sharing the gospel with others through their designs as well as the attitude of seeking out others with whom to share Christ. Ask for suggestions of ways to share Jesus through special activities or conversations with students neighbors and classmates at school. Divide into groups of five and let the children decide who they can pray for in addition to praying for Pastor Barnard and the students in Bellville. 6 SOUTHERN BAPTISTS OF TEXAS CONVENTION

Focal Bible Verse Let us love not with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 MISSIONS ACTIVITY ACTIVITY 2 MISSIONS GRAB BAG Cut apart the pictures from the missions grab bag activity page and put them in a lunch-size paper sack or something of similar size. If you want to find small renderings of actual items, like a bandage, a small plush farm animal, cowboy hat or skate board, for example, you can use actual items. Look at your map of Texas and review the three cities you have visited thus far (Boerne, Fort Worth and Bellville). Divide students into two teams. Give students a turn to pick a photo or object out of the bag. When the object is revealed that student must tell you the city that object matches. For example, a cowboy hat matches Boerne but it also matches Fort Worth! If a student can provide a correct answer on his own, award two points. If the student would like to get help from his or her team and they get a correct answer, award one point. If one team cannot provide the correct answer, the other team can try to answer correctly. If they do so, they get one point. Congratulate the students on their excellent memories. Ask them to remember these stories when they see these various items as they go about their daily lives and take a moment to thank God for the work going on in these cities and pray for the people in those cities as well as their own city. ACTIVITY 3 BOARD JUMPING After seeing the missions video, follow the rules of either Simon Says or Follow the Leader using different Ollie type skateboard tricks. Ollies are jumps without using a takeoff ramp. Skateboarders push the back part of their board down to get the board off of the ground. These are done on flat ground, street skating and vertical. You may want to Google the terms for pictures. For the purposes of this game, just pick out a few jumps to demonstrate or have one of the students demonstrate it. Not all will work for all ages. Especially for the younger children. They can use their imaginations and jump in different ways pretending to be on a board. AIRWALK - Ollie to grab the board by the nose and kick front leg forward and back leg back JUDO - Like an Airwalk but leave the back leg on the board TALIGRAB - Ollie up and grab the tail of the board with your back hand STALEFISH - Ollie and grab the back rail of the board between your feet with your back hand METHOD AIR - Ollie, grab the back rail between your feet with front hand. Bring board to a 90 degree angle JAPAN AIR - Grab the front rail just behind your foot with your hand and tweak it a little CHRIST AIR - Yes, this exists. Grab the board by the back rail and form a cross shape in the air POGO - Flat ground trick where you hop on the skateboard (youtube Rodney Mullen pogo) BASIC 180 OLLIE - Jump and turn around halfway 360 OLLIE - Jump and twist landing after a full rotation 540 MCTWIST - One and a half revolutions SNACK SUGGESTION Crackers and sugar-free lemonade 7 SOUTHERN BAPTISTS OF TEXAS CONVENTION

Focal Bible Verse Let us love not with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 A FAMILY CHALLENGE Dear Parents and Caregivers, Today in our missions session we learned about a special ministry in Bellville, Texas, that uses a unique way to find new people with whom they share Jesus. Bellville is a small Texas town located between Austin and Houston. Like many towns, Bellville has a First Baptist Church, which has a sanctuary with pews, an organ and piano. By giving skate equipment to the boys, Pastor Barnard was able to share that since God has freely given life to him, it was his desire to share Christ with them freely and give them a chance to respond to God s desire for them to accept Christ as their personal Savior. In our class today we talked about how even though skateboarding might not be one of your child s hobbies, we can think of different things that we all do that might be opportunities to make new friends and invite people to church and more importantly, invite people to trust Jesus as their Savior. Ask your child what ideas the class came up with today. Throughout the week if you see students skateboarding or participating in something like your child s sports activities or hobbies, take a brief moment to remind your student of the ministry of First Baptist Church of Bellville and voice a prayer for Pastor Barnard and staff at FBC Bellville as they reach out to boys and girls in their community. To see a full copy of today s story and suggested activities, visit www.sbtexas.com/missions4kids. You can ask your child to show you a few jumps he/she might have learned in class today. 8 SOUTHERN BAPTISTS OF TEXAS CONVENTION

The ABCs of Becoming a Christian by Ken and Kay Parker A stands for Admit. A person must admit to God that she is a sinner. She must be sorry for her sin and turn away from sinning. Verses that support this step are Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Acts 3:19; and 1 John 1:9. B stands for Believe. A person must believe that Jesus is God s Son and that God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for sin. Verses about believing include John 3:16; John 14:6; and Romans 5:8. C stands for Confess. A person must confess her faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Read Romans 10:9-10, 13. After a person admits to God that she is a sinner, repents and turns from her sin, believes that Jesus is God s Son sent to die to pay for the sins of the world, and confesses that faith in Jesus, she is a Christian and knows Jesus as her Savior. Remember: It is not your job to save your child - it is God s! However, as a parent you have the responsibility (and privilege) of guiding your child to faith in Christ. Pray that God will give you the wisdom to teach your child about Him. Then know that you can only do this with his help and thank him for his guidance. After all, he loves your child even more than you do! The following is a sample prayer to use as a guide for praying with your child: Dear God, thank you for choosing to love me! I know I am a sinner. I believe you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sins. I believe he rose again and lives today. Today, I repent and turn away from my sin. Thank you for your wonderful love and for changing my life forever. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. Ken and Kay Parker have worked for LifeWay Christian Resources and now serve at Oak Valley Baptist Church in Franklin, Tennessee, where Ken is pastor.
