THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD EASTER DAY HE IS RISEN! April 1, 2018 AS WE GATHER Christ is risen! It s hard to imagine someone who was killed on Friday rising to live again on Sunday. It has happened only once and is what we celebrate today: Jesus resurrection. Jesus didn t keep His resurrection a secret. He appeared to many people. He appeared to Mary, to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, to Peter and the apostles, to His brother James, to more than five hundred people, and lastly to the apostle Paul. We believe Jesus rose from the dead because He said He would, because the Scriptures said He would, and because He appeared to many. Today we celebrate Jesus resurrection, His appearance, and the Resurrection Hope He brings! BELL ANTHEM (7:00 & 9:00) This Joyful Eastertide WELCOME HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! He died for our sins, People: according to the Scriptures. He was buried in the tomb, People: according to the definite plan of God. He rose from the dead People: and appeared to many. Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! 1 Please face the Processional Cross at the entrance to the sanctuary. PROCESSIONAL HYMN #457 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today Jesus Christ is ris n today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heav nly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains which He endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky He s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as His love; Alleluia! Praise Him, all ye heav nly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION If Christ had not been raised from the dead, we would still be dead in our trespasses and sins. Let us consider our sinfulness and God s great mercy in Christ. Heavenly Father, People: we have sinned against you in our thoughts, words, and actions. We confess our shameful thoughts about our leaders, enemies, and strangers. We confess our inappropriate words spoken to our families, friends, and colleagues. We confess our inappropriate actions toward our neighbors. For the sake of the risen Christ, forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we follow in His footsteps both now and when He returns in glory. Amen. If Christ had not been raised from the dead, we would still be dead in our trespasses and sins, but Christ rose from the grave, and death no longer has dominion over Him! God did this in accordance with the Scriptures to forgive our sins. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ and by His authority, I forgive your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE #465 Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds Now all the vault of heav n resounds In praise of love that still abounds: Christ has triumphed! He is living! Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear! Repeat their song of glory here: Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! 2 continued

Adoring praises now we bring And with the heav nly blessed sing: Christ has triumphed! Alleluia! Be to the Father and our Lord, To Spirit blest, most holy God, All the glory, never ending! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God the Father, through your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, you have overcome death and opened the gate of everlasting life to us. Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of our Lord s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. CHOIR ANTHEM (7:00 & 9:00) Introit for Easter WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 25:6 9 (The long-awaited Savior will come and make a feast for all nations on His holy mountain.) On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:1 11 (Paul delivers to the Corinthians the things of first importance: that Christ died and was raised for our sins.) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than 3 five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. CHOIR ANTHEM (7:00 & 9:00) An Easter Carol HOLY GOSPEL Mark 16:1 8 (Women come to Jesus tomb on Easter morning to anoint Him with spices, but when they arrive, Jesus is not in the tomb.) When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb? And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. SERMON HYMN #478 4 continued The Day of Resurrection The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad, The Passover of gladness, The Passover of God. From death to life eternal, From sin s dominion free, Our Christ has brought us over With hymns of victory. Let hearts be purged of evil That we may see aright The Lord in rays eternal Of resurrection light And, list ning to His accents, May hear, so calm and plain, His own All hail! and, hearing, May raise the victor strain.

Now let the heav ns be joyful, Let earth its song begin, Let all the world keep triumph And all that is therein. Let all things, seen and unseen, Their notes of gladness blend; For Christ the Lord has risen, Our joy that has no end! All praise to God the Father, All praise to God the Son, All praise to God the Spirit, Eternal Three in One! Let all the ransomed number Fall down before the throne And honor, pow r, and glory Ascribe to God alone! SERMON What Shall I Do With Jesus? Mark 16:1-8 NICENE CREED (found on the inside back cover of the hymnal) OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Fill all your baptized people with the joy of His victory, and send us forth as witnesses to His resurrection. Lord, in your mercy, Lover of mankind, prosper your Gospel wherever it is preached throughout the world, that it may give and sustain faith in all who hear it.
