Noah s Salvation and Ours Text: Genesis 6:11-22; 1 Pet 3:20-21 Introduction: A. We all know the story of how God saved Noah from the flood. 1. Man had become so wicked, God decided to destroy man by a flood. 2. Tell the story in brief of the flood and the fact that God spared Noah and his family. B. Comparing our Salvation to Noah s salvation is not a new concept but rather it is taken from the scriptures - 1 Peter 3:20-21 (NKJV) ---- who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. [21] There is also an antitype which now saves us-- baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, II. There are several parallels between Noah s salvation from the flood and our salvation today - yet today I will concentrate on just one which Peter focuses on. A. Type and Antitype... 1. Type was the prefiguring example where as the Antitype was the spiritual reality. B. Examples of Types and Antitypes: 1. The Passover Lamb prefigured the Blood of Jesus - Ex. 12:13 - "Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt." (NKJV) a. Jesus blood was the antitype for which the type was created - Romans 5:9 (NKJV) ---- Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 2. The OT tabernacle and Temples are the types of the true - Ex 26 a. The Heavenly Temple which the Lord erected - Heb 8:2 - "a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man." (NKJV) 3. Noah s salvation in the ark was the type according to Peter a. Our salvation in Christ, is the Spiritual reality - 1 Peter 3:20-21 C. Noah s Salvation Required: 1. An Agent--God 2. Agency-- The flood of Water 3. A Vehicle to Use the Agency The Ark 4. Like wise: a. Our Salvation Requires (1) An Agent--God (a) Agency--The Death & Resurrection of Jesus (b) A Vehicle to Use the Agency-- Baptism D. Examination of the text: 1. Noah s salvation - a. Agent = Divine Longsuffering b. Agency = the ark c. Vehicle - water 2. Baptism Saves Us... a. The agent - God b. The agency - through the resurrection c. Vehicle - Baptism E. Conclusions drawn: Page 1 of 5

1. 1 Peter 3:20 (NKJV) - who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved (Genesis 7:13) through water. 2. 1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV) ---- There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia: the like figure whereunto (even) baptism doth also now save us, i.e. baptism is the antitype of the ark wherein... eight souls were saved (or brought safely) through water, Revised Version which also after a true likeness ( in the antitype ) doth now save you even baptism ); b. This is equally demonstrated by this next graphic slide. F. Vehicle without Agency is Useless 1. No water or no resurrection = no deliverance G. Agency without Vehicle does not save 1. No Ark or no Baptism = does not save H. But - Agency plus Vehicle Equals justification 1. Romans 4:24-25 (KJV) - [24] But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; [25] Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. a. 1 Peter 3:20-21 (NKJV) - [21] There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,, 2. Agency plus Vehicle Equals New Birth a. 1 Peter 1:3 (KJV) - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1) 1 Peter 3:20-21 (NKJV) [21] There is also an antitype which now saves us-- baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,, III. Noah s New Life and the Obedient Believers New Life A. Noah was physically delivered from God s judgment upon a wicked world through the flood in the ark! 1. Hebrews 11:7 (NKJV) - By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. B. We are spiritually delivered from God s judgment upon a sinful world through the resurrection of Christ in baptism. 1. Romans 6:3-5 (NKJV) -... [4] Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.... C. The Parenthetical Phrase... 1. 1 Peter 3:20-21 (NKJV) -.. while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. [21] There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 2. Attention is next directed to the nature of baptism and it is viewed both negatively and Page 2 of 5

positively. On the one hand Peter explains what it is not, i.e. simply the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but on the other hand, it is the answer of a good conscience toward God. The reader will easily note that this saving process is connected with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The phrase filth of the flesh refers to the dirt of the body according to some (cf. Arndt and Gingrich, 745). Other commentators argue that the filth of the flesh simply means that baptism in water is not simply a ceremonial cleansing of the body, but is connected with the cleansing of the heart. a. It is very IMPORTANT to note the next phrase in that it is Peter s affirmation of what baptism is: an answer of a good conscience toward God. This is a death blow to those who argue against the necessity of baptism, for this portion of the text affirms that in water baptism one is seeking, inquiring, asking for a clean conscience. If one is saved by faith alone, without and before water baptism then this verse makes no sense. The term answer (KJV) is defined by Thayer as the terms of the inquiry and demand, a question. This term would include and require an earnest seeking, i.e. a craving and intense desire for a thing. Arndt and Gingrich would define the term as a request, appeal an appeal to God for a clear conscience I Peter 3:21 (AG, 285). To argue from this context that Peter assumes an inward cleansing prior to the act of baptism is not only unwarranted, but it is a perversion of God s word due to theological error and preconceived notions. D. An appeal to God for a good conscience ---- G1906 epero tema - 1. Thayer Definition: a. an enquiry, a question b. a demand c. earnestly seeking (1) craving, an intense desire d. Part of Speech: noun neuter - A Related Word by Thayer s/strong s Number: from G1905 Citing in TDNT: 2:688, 262 2. Vines: a. Interrogation - (ejperwvthma, (1906), primarily a question or enquiry, denotes a demand or appeal; it is found in 1 Pet. 3:21, R.V., interrogation (A.V., answer ). Some take the word to indicate that baptism affords a good conscience, an appeal against the accuser. b. Answer, Note: 1 Pet. 3:21, is not, as in the A.V., an answer. It was used by the Greeks in a legal sense, as a demand or appeal. 3. Arndt & Gingrich. a. Baptism is an appeal to God for a clear conscience (Greek Lexicon, p. 285). 4. Kittel s Theological Dictionary (Abridged), a. the rendition is this: Baptism does not confer physical cleansing but saves as a request for forgiveness... (p. 262). 5. Johnson, Barton W. ----... "the interrogation of a good conscience." "Inquiry" would be still better. The soul seeking the forgiveness of sins "inquires" What shall I do to remove the sense of unforgiven sins and make my conscience void of offense? The answer is "Repent and be baptized," etc. See Acts 2:38. He who obeys the word of the Lord has the "inquiry" answered in baptism. "Commentary on 1 Peter 3". "People's New Testament". E. Made towards God... 1. Acts 2:21-38 - "And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have Page 3 of 5

IV. taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. For David says concerning Him: I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence. Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (NKJV) 2. Rom 10:13-16 - "For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report? " (NKJV) 3. Acts 22:16 - "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. " (NKJV) In Conclusion: A. Noah s Salvation: 1. By Grace- Gen. 6:8 2. By Faith- Heb. 11:7 3. By Obedience- Gen 6:22 4. By Vehicle - Heb. 11:7 5. By the Water of the flood - 1 Pet. 3:20 B. Our Salvation 1. By Grace - Eph. 2:8 2. By Faith - Acts 16:31 3. By Obedience - Heb. 5:9; Rom 6:16-18 4. By Vehicle - Heb. 5:9; Tit. 3:5 5. By Jesus resurrection - 1 Pet. 3:21 C. How much obedience is enough? 1. In order for Noah s family to be saved? Gen 6:8, 22; 7:5; Heb 11:7; 1 Peter 3:21 2. In order for the walls of Jericho to fall? Josh. 6:2, 20; Heb. 11:30 3. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin."
