December 3, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, Welcome to the First Sunday of Advent, a new beginning to a short season. We will reach the celebration of Christmas Day in just over three weeks! Let me give you a few highlights of this important time for us to prepare ourselves spiritually for the first coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Remember that we must always be ready for the Second Coming of Jesus our King, when the Lord will return in power and glory to judge the living and the dead. He was born once, he died once. The time of his second coming is unpredictable. That is why the first days of Advent tell us to look forward to the end of this world and its eternal rewards and punishments. After that beginning about the end of time, we can then refocus on the awesome joyful moment when the Son of God was born in the little town of Bethlehem to the Virgin Mary and her husband Joseph. During this first week of Advent we have a special feast of the Blessed Mother and a holyday of obligation this Friday. We will have Masses on Thursday afternoon at 4pm and on Friday at 7am, 8:30am, Noon, and 7:30pm. What we celebrate is something that took place years before Jesus was born. So to help people like us who may be confused about the holyday of THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, let me explain. Our divinely established Church believes and teaches that Mary - given the fact that God the Father chose her to be the Mother of His Son - was conceived without original sin. Tradition says that the names of her parents were Joachim and Ann. They were people who conceived her in the normal way - but she did not have any sin on her soul. As we say so often, she was conceived without original sin. She is the only person like that. All the rest of us are born with the stain of original sin on our souls, a legacy from the decision of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to disobey God. Mary did not have this original sin on her soul. And though she had freedom to sin, she did not disappoint God or harm us. Because when she was asked by the angel Gabriel to be the Mother of His Son - she said Yes, and took on her mysterious life-giving service to all of us. She became the Mother of our Savior. So, in anticipation of what she would do with her life, Mary was conceived without sin. Then she lived her life loving God completely and saying yes to Him every day - which is another way of saying that she lived without sinning. And while she was still a young woman, engaged but not yet intimate with Joseph her husband-to-be, she gave her greatest Yes ("Let it be done to me as you say") to the divine messenger we call the Angel Gabriel. And then our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Son of God, was conceived in her womb through the power of the Holy Spirit. Why was she sin-free? If you were God and choosing someone to be the mother of your only Son - wouldn't you want the best? Mary proved to be wonderful in her faith and love and goodness. And she is not just the Mother of Jesus she has the title of Mother of the Church. She is our Lady, our Queen, our Intercessor. That us why we should come on Friday: to praise God, to honor her, to pledge our loyalty and our love to her and to her Son. Friday December 8 is not just a holyday; it is also the first day of our Saint Teresa School Christmas Fair. Friday hours are 8am to 4pm. Then on Saturday, all the food, chances, and shopping continue from 1pm to 7pm, with the lighting of the Christmas Tree display outside Conran Hall following the 4pm Mass. And then there is one more opportunity for all these exciting activities on Sunday, from 10am to 3pm. Special thanks to all the great parents and school supporters who are doing so much to make this Christmas Fair, our biggest fundraiser, a very happy experience for children and visitors, and a beneficial event for the support of our school. Please know that your visit to our Christmas Fair is very desired and will be very appreciated. Part of getting ready for Christmas is cleaning the house and straightening everything up. So besides offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Saturday from noon to 1pm, in two weeks we will be having our useful annual ADVENT DAY OF RECONCILATION with private confessions from 4pm to 8pm, on Monday December 18. Finally, next Sunday we invite you to take home a beautiful religious calendar for 2018. We chose a calendar showing wonderful scenes of our country, with inspiring verses from Scripture. Our thanks to Casey Funeral Home for again providing these free calendars for our parishioners. Catholic saints and seasons are all shown, with space for your own notes on important days. Here is a suggestion: as you put your new calendars into use, offer up a prayer that many good things will happen for you and for all of us in the months to come. - 3 Msgr. William Belford
