Opening Thought I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. (John 10:14) I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11) Where do you find security? Some find security by getting home and relaxing in the living room after a chaotic day at work. Some find security in their education and know that it qualifies them for numerous job opportunities. Some find security having all their insurance needs covered, life, car, home, and disability. Some find security in a well-balanced financial portfolio. While all these suggestions are good and bring the human mind assurance, none offer spiritual security. Jesus words above offer true security. Jesus illustration of being the Good Shepherd has often brought many spiritual comfort. It is a long-lasting illustration. King David wrote about this same illustration in his most famous Psalm 23. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing. (v. 1) David wrote these words 1000 years before Jesus declared himself as the Good Shepherd. David found such strong comfort reflecting on his own personal role as a shepherd for sheep. He assured King Saul before fighting Goliath that God was with him. As a shepherd, he defended his sheep from a bear and a lion. David reflected on this comfort knowing the LORD was his shepherd through his whole life, Even though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (v. 4) So we too find comfort in our Good Shepherd. He leads us to the green pastures to feed on his Word. He provides our church with qualified shepherds, pastors, to teach us God s Word as we attend church and Bible class. He provides our families with trained teachers to instruct our children in the truths of God s Word in our Lutheran Elementary School. Our shepherd protects us from the roaring lion of Satan. Every time we pray the Lord s Prayer, we ask him your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and, lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil. Our Good Shepherd equips us with the weapon to ward of the devil s attacks, his Word. He assures us that we will not be tempted beyond what we can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can stand up under it. (I Corinthians 10:13) Finally, our Good Shepherd did the ultimate task, I lay my life down for my sheep when he willingly went to the cross to pay for our sins. He took up his life to be our living Savior. We know that through him we will have eternal life in heaven. Find security in your Good Shepherd, Jesus. MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK Last week s answer: Unfortunately no one correctly answered that it would take about 11 minutes for the storm to hit Pleasantville. This week s question: Here is an interesting fact: The average person will walk enough in his/her lifetime to go around the earth three times. Assume a person lives for 80 years. Assume the Earth is 25,000 miles at its equator. How many miles would a person have to walk each day to go around the Earth three times in his/her lifetime? Round your answer to the nearest tenth of a mile. School Play Preschool through 4 th grade play Aesop s Fables is TONIGHT @6:00 pm. Remember to send $5 for your child s t-shirt. SARAH REIK PRESENTATION DVD The Sarah Reik, Bullying Fighting Fear with Love, DVD s are now edited and available. Please sign up in the school office so we know how many copies to make.

FOUNDATIONS Our final chapter for the school year from our Foundations book concludes the theme on the key word, Joy. Chapter 21 is titled, Sabbath Joy. It is on pages 116-119. The main topic in this chapter is on rest. The author suggests the importance of why we need physical, emotional, and spiritual rest. He reminds us that our God modeled this rest for us when he rested on the 7 th Day after creation. The children of Israel found rest on the Sabbath Day. We find rest when we gather to hear God s Word in our worship services. Make sure that your hectic lives include an hour or two every week to gain the spiritual rest your soul needs by coming to church and even attending Bible class. If you have any further questions on the reading, bring them up to a teacher or fellow school family. HOOPS 4 HEART/JUMP ROPE 4 HEART Collection forms are due today; however, if you need an extra day, I will be putting together the order early next week. Please get them to Mr. Leonard as soon as possible. Last year the money we raised saved 48 lives! Can we do better? I believe we can, and if we reach $4000 this year I am willing to get pied as well as Mr. G. If you need collection forms or just simply more information please feel free to contact Mr. Leonard. KINDERGARTEN The kindergarten class is excited to sing for you tonight! Our song is about vowels, which we are learning during school. We are writing sentences and counting by 2's. Our caterpillars have made chrysalises and we await butterflies! Monday, May 22 is the track meet and on Wednesday, May 24th we will have school all day! 2 ND GRADE The 2nd graders have been learning lots of fables! Our class read many fables and each student wrote their own. The class is looking forward to our fable play on Thursday night! Our class has learned all the upper and lower case cursive letters! Now we can practice using them in our writing! In math class we started learning multiplication. So far we have learned x2, x5 and x10! The class is doing a great job! In reading our class will start reading chapter books in May! Thanks to all the parents who helped with our play, Aesop s Fables. We had many parents helping with costumes and scenery, and it s all appreciated so much. 3 RD & 4 TH GRADE The third and fourth grades are finishing up studying the Midwestern States. They have all presented a PowerPoint on their state to the class. They are learning a lot in Technology with Mr. Gustafson! The last set of states that we are studying are the Mountain States. In reading the third graders are studying The Little House on the Prairie. We re learning a lot about the hard life of a pioneer. The fourth graders are reading Island of the Blue Dolphins. In May, we are planning to go on a field trip to Irvine Park on May 18th. Please check your calendars to see if you can drive and chaperone. If you can drive, please let me know. I will be sending out permission slips as soon as I have enough chaperones. Have a great May! Blessings, Mrs. Pitt
5TH AND 6TH GRADE NEWS Last week a note was sent home with information about upcoming events and field trips for the students. The permission slips and money need to be in by next Thursday, May 4th. Currently I have enough drivers for the Como Zoo/Aquarium Field trip (I can take more parents if you are interested in coming, but I don t need anymore); however, I am short drivers for the River Education Days on May 17th. If you are able to driver for the day it would be greatly appreciated. Next week Monday kicks off the final month, please help the students remember the importance of finishing strong academically. As the days becoming warmer (not counting today), it is very easy to start summer break early. Finally, please keep checking the monthly calendar as well as Lion s Roar to know what is going on here at St. Mark this last month. 7 TH -8 TH GRADE TRIP The students in 7th and 8th grade traveled to Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, last week. Martin Luther College belongs to you. This special college trains our future pastors and teachers for the full-time Gospel ministry in the Wisconsin Synod. Ask them about their trip. They participated in many activities. These included the following: a Twins game, tours and mini-classes at MLC, a tour of Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota, visiting Minneopa State Park to see a waterfall, a tour at the August Schell Brewing Company, and a round of disc golf. We hope the trip created many lasting memories for our students. 7 th & 8 th GRADE NEWS The 7th and 8th graders have been reading "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" for reading class. This novel, set in the late 1600's in the New England area focuses on how different life was in the early colonies. Many things were different and students have been discussing those differences in class. The 7th-grade students are moving through US History by studying the US Constitution and how the first government of the United States was set up. Many people do not realize how long this process took, and the 7th graders have learned that our government was set up poorly following the Revolutionary War. The 8th graders are now studying their last unit of US History from the 1980s- Present Day. This will complete their study of our country's history over the last year and a half. It is certainly apparent how the Lord has guided our country! Even though there are always ups and downs, we know He is always in control!
