R E F L E C T I O N S There dwells upon this earth a mysterious Being, whose office is to renew the fallen and restore the wandering. We cannot see him or hear him, yet he dwells in some of us as Lord of our nature. His chosen residence is a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Charles Spurgeon By the Spirit we have communion direct and immediate communion with no one less than the Son and the Father themselves. The Holy Spirit is God Himself living in us. Herman Bavinck O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams. Augustine (354-430) Sometimes I have loved the peacefulness of an ordinary Sunday. It is like standing in a newly planted garden after a warm rain. You can feel the silent and invisible life. All it needs from you is that you take care not to trample on it. Marilynne Robinson

Please use this time for prayer and meditation as we prepare to go before the living God in worship. CALL TO WORSHIP: from Psalm 117; Revelation 5:12 Pastor: Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! All: For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Pastor: Praise the LORD! Let us join with the myriads of angels saying, All: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! Pastor: Come, let us worship! P R A I S E HYMN OF PRAISE: 172 Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. 2

C O N F E S S I O N SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 18:4-9 4 Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the 5 6 soul who sins shall die. If a man is righteous and does what is just and right if he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not 7 defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman in her time of menstrual impurity, does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, commits no robbery, gives his bread to 8 the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, does not lend at interest or take any profit, withholds his hand from injustice, executes true justice between man and man, 9 walks in my statutes, and keeps my rules by acting faithfully he is righteous; he shall surely live, declares the Lord God. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN: a Puritan prayer All: Blessed Spirit, author of all grace and comfort, come, work repentance in my soul. Represent sin to me in its vile colors that I may hate it. Melt my heart by the majesty and mercy of God. Show me my ruined self and the help there is in him. Teach me to see my Creator, his ability to save, his arms outstretched, his heart big for me. May I trust in his power and love, commit my soul to him without reserve, bear his image, observe his laws, pursue his service, and be through time and eternity a monument to the efficacy of his grace, a trophy of his victory. Make me willing to be saved in his way, perceiving nothing in myself, but all in Jesus. In his name I pray, amen. SILENT REFLECTION AND CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE & PEACE OF GOD: Titus 3:4-7 Pastor: When the goodness and lovingkindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, All: whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Pastor: The peace of Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. HYMN: 253 There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood 3

C O M M I T M E N T OFFERTORY PRAYER OFFERTORY Presentation of tithes & offerings DOXOLOGY (Hymnal, page 731) AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. RESPONSE: 735 Gloria Patri PRAYER OF INTERCESSION HYMN: Come, O Creator Spirit Blest 4

P R E A C H I N G O F T H E W O R D SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:1-11 1 2 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the 3 Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh 4 and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law 5 might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live 6 according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh 7 is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is 8 hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh 9 cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God 10 dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ 11 is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. SERMON: The Gift Who Brings Life & Liberty Rev. Jeff Pate HYMN: 420 At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing RESPONSIVE READING: Pastor: All: Pastor: C O M M U N I O N Our Lord commands all believers to eat this broken bread and to drink this cup in true faith and in the confident hope of his return in glory. In this supper God declares to us that our sins have been completely forgiven through the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which he himself finished on the cross once for all. He also declares to us that the Holy Spirit grafts us into Christ, who with his very body is now in heaven at the right hand of the Father, where he wants us to worship him. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER Riverwood Presbyterian uses wine in the celebration of Holy Communion. If you would prefer non-alcoholic grape juice, please take a cup from the inner circle of the tray. We have 11 children signed up for camp. The families of these children and other members of the congregation will be providing the meal to raise money to cover the costs of camp. The meal will consist of a baked potato bar, macaroni and cheese, salads, and desserts. The cost is whatever you wish or are able to donate. Please mark your calendar and join us for a great time of fellowship, a wonderful meal, and to meet the children who are going to camp this year.
