April 5 th, 2015 Our Order of Worship Liturgy: Common Service (CW pg 15) Handbells: Easter Joy Opening Hymn: 142 Come You Faithful, Raise the Strain Easter Responsive Reading M: Christ is arisen! C: HE IS RISEN INDEED! Hymn: 152 vs. 1-4 I know that my Redeemer Lives (Feel free to try the descant!) M: This is the day the Lord has made. C: We will rejoice and be glad in it. M: I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done. C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. M: The Lord's right hand was majestic in power. The Lord's right hand shattered the enemy. In the greatness of his majesty he threw down those who opposed him. C: Death has been swallowed up in victory. M: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? C: Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. M: I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. C: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! M: The Lamb at the center of the throne will be our shepherd; he will lead us to springs of living water. C: And God will wipe away every tear from our eyes. Hymn: 152 vs. 5-8 I know that my Redeemer Lives (Feel free to try the descant!) 1

First Lesson: Isaiah 25:6-9 6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine the best of meats and the finest of wines. 7 On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; 8 he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The LORD has spoken. 9 In that day they will say, Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. Psalm of the Day: Psalm 118 (CW Supplement) Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:19-26 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. Verse of the Day: Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Alleluia. Stand Gospel Lesson: Mark 16:1-8 1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb? 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been 2

rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 Don t be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. 8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. Nicene Creed (pg 19 in red hymnal) Be Seated Hymn of the Day: 150 Christ the Lord is Risen Today Sermon Lesson: John 16:16-22 16 In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me. 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, What does he mean by saying, In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me, and Because I am going to the Father? 18 They kept asking, What does he mean by a little while? We don t understand what he is saying. 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me? 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. Sermon: I Tell You the Truth... Your Grief Will Turn to Joy I. You will weep, mourn, and grieve II. Your grief will turn to joy Stand Create in Me (pg 20 in red Hymnal) 3

We engage in the continuing development of disciples of Jesus Christ by gathering for worship and fellowship in order to grow in faith and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. By God s grace we proclaim Christ and His Word with our lips and lives. As Christians, we realize that it is only through the Gospel in Word and Sacraments one can be equipped for discipleship and bringing glory to God. As part of the body of Christ, we keep worship, personal Bible study, and Christian education as essential elements of our congregational life. We encourage our members and all people to grow in their faith and knowledge of Christ and His will for us. Here at St. John, we are welcoming to our community and strive to share God s plan of grace with them. St. John is known as a visible example of God s Love for all people.
