Third Sunday of Easter April 19 th, 2015 Our Order of Worship Liturgy: Divine Service I with Communion (CWS Insert pg 10) Opening Hymn: 225 This Is the Day the Lord Has Made First Lesson: Acts 4:8-12 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 He is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Psalm of the Day: Psalm 118 (pg. 108 in hymnal) Second Lesson: 1 John 1:1-2:2 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete. 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not 2

sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Verse of the Day: Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Our hearts were burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us. Alleluia. ** Sunday school & LES Kids singing at 10:15 Service ** Stand Gospel Lesson: Luke 24:36-49 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have. 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, Do you have anything here to eat? 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. 44 He said to them, This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms. 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. Nicene s Creed (pg 17 in CWS insert) 3

Be Seated Hymn of the Day: 160 This Joyful Eastertide Sermon: Salvation is found in no one else Offering Please sign our Friendship Register Stand Prayer of the Church Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. The Sacrament Words of Institution Communion Hymn: 310 I Come, O Savior, To your Table Prayers and Blessing (CWS insert pg 25) Closing Hymn: 528 Christ is our Cornerstone ******************************************************* Gather, Grow, and Go with the Gospel to Glorify God St. John Lutheran Church exists as part of the Holy Christian Church on earth. We engage in the continuing development of disciples of Jesus Christ by gathering for worship and fellowship in order to grow in faith and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. By God s grace we proclaim Christ and His Word with our lips and lives. As Christians, we realize that it is only through the Gospel in Word and Sacraments one can be equipped for discipleship and bringing glory to God. As part of the body of Christ, we keep worship, personal Bible study, and Christian education as essential elements of our 4

congregational life. We encourage our members and all people to grow in their faith and knowledge of Christ and His will for us. Here at St. John, we are welcoming to our community and strive to share God s plan of grace with them. St. John is known as a visible example of God s Love for all people. Apple Valley Food Pantry Donation Day Update: The April collection date for the WELS Apple Valley Food Pantry is Sunday, April 19, 2015. THANK YOU to all the churches for the wonderful food pantry collections we have received in the past few months. Please remember us during the summer also! Here is a list of items the food pantry needs: Laundry & dish soaps, cereal, hamburger helper, spaghetti sauce & noodles, peanut butter & jam, canned fruit, rice, and all kinds of crackers. Thank you to all and God's blessings to you always. Church Library Update: While the church library was being cleaned and organized, the cleaners came across three books that probably should be in the hands of family members. Please claim the books by contacting Joan Zahn (336-5965). Thank you. Evang. Lutherisches GESANGBUCH fur Kirche, Schule and Haus, (that is, "Evangelical Lutheran Hymnal for Church, School, and 6

Home") published by NPH. Cover is gold-stamped "William Hildebrandt." Identical to above, but gold-stamped "August Bohrtz." The Lutheran Hymnal. Leather version of our former hymnal. Gold- stamped on the cover: Mr. and Mrs. Peter Eiler. Land Payment Update: We are now entering a new phase of our land payment program. It is called the Planting / Growing / Harvesting Season. Although we did not win the March Madness basketball tournament we did not lose either. The side support that was received to reach our $200,000 goal was very much appreciated. Since the program started in October of 2014, 7 monthly payments of $2,900 were made. These payments brought us down from owing $200,000 to owing $190,000. With commitments totaling $141,086; only $58,914 is needed to pay off our land mortgage. It is our hope and prayer that this $58,914 can be raised without the help of our side support. Could be ones who committed could add to their commitment. Could be those who did not commit just turn into contributors. Could be a combination of the above two. However if we fall short the side support wills till be there. In our new Planting, Growing and Harvesting Phase, our contributors have blessed us with 10% of our spring needs to date. It is our hope and prayer that with a solid, positive response from our members, all of our new phase program will be met by May 10 th, 2015. Please pick up a new contribution envelope in back of church. Make out a check payable to St. John Ev. Lutheran Church and drop it in the collection plate by May 10 th. For further questions, please call Norbert Kussow 920-532-4781. May God bless our contributors, all our members and St. John Ev. Lutheran Church. Thank you! 7
