3PK August 15-16, 2015 Joshua 3 & 6 First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Joshua Fights the Battle of Jericho God wants us to obey him. Preschoolers may not remember all the minor details of a story like this, and that s okay. The real emphasis of this lesson is to help them understand we should do what God tells us to, because He loves us and knows what best for us! Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group As you re waiting for parents to arrive, ask kids why they made their trumpets. Did somebody in today s story use trumpets? Today we are continuing the story of the Israelites and their new leader, Joshua! God asked his people to do some pretty crazy things, but Joshua knew that if they obeyed god, he would bless them for it.

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter) Line Up Tell kids that today we re learning about a man named Joshua. (Ask kids to repeat Joshua with you.) Joshua and his army marched a long, long time around a big city! Let s pretend to march around our own city! Put some blocks or a toy in the middle of the room, and tell kids to follow behind you, marching in a circle around the city. Whenever you say, Stop! everybody has to FREEZE in line in a funny position! When you say, March again, everybody starts marching in a circle. As you walk into Large Group, encourage kids to put on their listening ears! Remind that HOPS will be showing us how we should act in Large Group, so we have to listen!

Goal: To help kids (1) understand how God helped Joshua and the Israelites find their home and (2) recognize that God wants us to obey him. Why? God wants us to obey him, not just to follow rules, but to be closer to him! He knows the plan he has for us, and we need to trust him to carry it out. Tip: Remind kids that the Israelites could not defeat Jericho on their own they needed God s help to do it! REVIEW THE STORY 1. What were the Israelites trying to find? (Their new home, Canaan) 2. What was in the way of their new home? (The city Jericho) 3. What did God tell Joshua to do to get past Jericho? (ON the 7 th day they blew trumpets and yelled.) 4. Could the Israelites beat Jericho on their own? (No they needed God s help.) 5. Does God ever tell us to do things? (Yes) Should we obey him? (Yes) 6. Why should we obey God? (Because he loves us, because we love him, he knows what s best for us, etc.) TRUMPETS Say: We should always obey what God tell us, because he has good things planned for us! We re going to practice obeying today! Before you hand out noise-makers, remind kids that they can only blow the noisemaker when you SAY they can. Hand each kid 1 plastic noise-maker. Read the story of Joshua from the paper provided, and tell kids that whenever you say the word Jericho they can blow their noise-makers! But only when you say, Jericho. Read the story, and remind kids that they re obeying what you say, just like we should obey God! *Pray together and thank God for wanting to be close to us! (Continued on next page)

2 Extra time? Have them do a coloring page. After that, gather kids into a circle, and have them hold their trumpets. When you raise you hand, they can blow their trumpets as loud as they can! When you bring your hand down, they have to be completely silent.

1 Have you ever had difficulty obeying God? Share it with the kids! Tell them sometimes it s hard to obey, even when you re a grown up! But God helps us obey him, because he loves us. There are some fun, exciting elements to today s story: marching, making loud noises by yelling and blowing horns, and the walls of a whole city falling to the ground! If kids start to lose focus, have them reenact some of these elements on the spot. You could have them march in place, yell out a specific word, or act really surprised when the walls of Jericho fall down! *Click to play intro music Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid s Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. She s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today in Kids Club. Video: HOPS Share with others! (about 1 minute) (Hold up the Bible for kids to see.) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond the Bible! ) That s right, the Bible! It s God s Rescue plan. This book shows us how he rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. And it was all GOOD. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve and you and me could be close to God again! Do you know who the rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!) That s right! Jesus! INTRO: JOSHUA AND THE ISRAELITES We ve been talking a lot about God s special family, the Israelites. Can you say Israelites? (Let kids respond.) Good job! The Israelites were wandering around in the desert for a long, long time. But when they were hungry, God gave them food! (Click to show slide.) Can you

pat your tummy to show that you re full? (Let kids respond.) When they were thirsty, God gave them water! (Click to show slide). Can you take a big gulp, to show how you drink water? (Let kids respond.) He gave them everything they needed. But God was going to give them something even better. He told them he would lead them to a new home! A place where they would be safe, and where they could worship God all the time! Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond.) God chose a special person to lead the Israelites to their new home. His name was Joshua. Can you say, Joshua? (Let kids respond.) Good job! THE ISRAELITES AND JERICHO While the Israelites were on their way to their new home, they came across a BIG problem. There was a city in their way! This city was called Jericho. Let s all say Jericho together! (Let kids respond.) Good job! Jericho had really high walls. Let s all reach our hands up as high as we can! (Reach your hands up along with kids.) There was no way they could climb over those walls! It seemed impossible! They were probably really scared. They didn t know if they would get to their new home! Can you all show me a scared face? (Let kids respond.) The good news is that God can do ANYTHING! Even help them defeat a big city like Jericho! We re going to watch a video about what God told Joshua and the Israelites to do next. As you watch, try to figure out what God tells them to do to Jericho s high walls! VIDEO: God s Story/Joshua Takes Jericho Wow! So what did God tell the Israelites to do around the city? (Let kids answer, March around the wall, shout, make the walls fall down, etc.) Good job! God told them to march around the city wall for 6 days! Let s all count to six right now. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6! That is A LOT of marching. What did he tell them to do on the 7 th day? (Let kids respond, Shout, Yell, Blow trumpets etc.) You re right! God told them to yell and blow trumpets on the 7 th day! Did it work? (Let kids respond, Yes! ) Yes it did! The walls fell down to the ground with a loud BOOM (Speak into the microphone loudly.) Sometimes, God asks us to do scary things, or even silly things! But he is ALWAYS with us, and that means we don t have to be afraid! When we do something God tells us to, that means we OBEY him. God always wants us to obey him, because he has good things planned for us! PRAY (Break it down into small, repeatable phrases) Dear God. We love you. Thank you for helping us do hard things. We want to obey you. A-men! WORSHIP One way to obey God is to worship him by singing songs! Let s all stand and sing about how God wants us to obey him!

Song: Come With Me Song: Be Strong Song: Deep and Wide (extra song if you have time left over) Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop to their groups.)
