A Blessed New Year Numbers 6:22-27 The LORD bless you and keep you! We begin the new year with hope. It is filled with possibility. Our calendars may look empty, but they will soon be filled with activity and events. We already have plans for some of them. Other events will surprise us. We realize this year will bring a measure of sorrow, but we trust it to also bring a measure of joy. Let this day and this year be a blessing. Today we hear the words of blessing spoken by God to Moses. The Lord bless you and keep you. They are words of favor. The Lord give you peace! They are words that wish the finest blessing, the gift of peace. This new year, with all its promise, gives us the possibility of blessing. Perhaps you have withheld blessing from someone you know. Perhaps you especially need God s gift of peace. Perhaps you fear the absence of God s protection. Let this blessing calm your heart. Let it inspire you to breath God s gift of peace to all you meet this day and this new year. In early January we re still enjoying the season of Christmas. We have many more days to sing carols, to invite guests over, to share the peace of the season. In this bright new year let the blessing of God, first spoken to Moses, echoing throughout the ages, enter your home and warm your heart. Written by Paul Turner 2002 Liturgy Training Publications Christmas Offerings Thank you to those who have responded so generously with your Christmas envelopes. If you have not yet had the opportunity to complete your Christmas offering to the parish, you may continue to do so throughout the month of January. We will then make a final report of all Christmas offerings received. Initial Offering Envelopes Please remember to use your Initial Offering Envelope in the January packet. A suggested donation of $1 0.00 will help defray the cost of printing and mailing con-tribution envelopes.

December 28, 2014 St. Florian Parish Page 5 Year of Sacraments One Word at a Time Año De Los Sacramentos De Palabra En Palabra Cry Infants cry. We all know it. In their vulnerability, they let us know that they need nourishment or need to be held. We know that this is true of the newborn Jesus. The Eternal Word made flesh shares the human vulnerability of every other infant on earth. And this infant vulnerability their need and their smallness draws us close to them. We may grow up, but we never leave behind our fundamental vulnerability. In different ways, we continue to cry for sustenance, for mercy, for strength, for healing, and for connection and communion. In our vulnerability, God draws close to us, as Scripture says, with bands of love. When our deepest needs and vulnerabilities prompt us to cry, the Lord draws us to himself through sacramental signs and rituals. He hears our every cry, and the sacraments of the Church tell us that this is true. When only the main celebrant prays out loud, the other priests fold their hands. When they all pray aloud together, they all extend their hands. A little before the consecration, the main celebrant brings his hands together, palms down, and extends them over the offerings. Other concelebrants should make the same gesture from where they stand, using both hands. They are praying that the Holy Spirit will change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. During the consecration, as the main celebrant holds the bread and then the chalice while repeating the words of Christ, concelebrants may extend their right hands toward these offerings. This unique gesture is probably intended as a way for the other priests to point. The gesture goes with "This" as in, "This is my Body" (Notitiae 1 [1965] 143, no. 34). To perform this action, concelebrants extend their right hands with the palm to the side, rather than down. This keeps the gesture distinct from the one made earlier with both hands. The gesture during the consecration is to be made "if this seems appropriate," but almost all concelebrants use it. However, it is also acceptable for them to make no gesture at all. The concelebrants could just look at the alter while saying the words of consecration. However the priests gesture, they help the people offer the Eucharistic prayer. The change in gestures alerts the faithful to the development of the prayer from words of thanksgiving to words of petition and into a sense of wonder as the Holy Spirit makes truly present the body and blood of Christ.
