THE LORD OF HOSTS 1 SAMUEL 1:45-46 & OTHERS Text: 1 Samuel 1:45-46 1 Samuel 1:45-46 45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Introduction: This is a title that emphasizes God s rule over every other power in the material and spiritual universe. The term Lord of Hosts is used 282 times in the Bible. It is a military term meaning God of Battles. Notice what the Lord of Hosts does for us: - 1 -

1. THE LORD OF HOST PROTECTS US 1 Samuel 1:46-4 46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 4 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands. A. Physically speaking David could not defeat Goliath B. Strategically speaking David could not defeat Goliath. He had no armor, no sword or weapon. C. Logically speaking David had no chance God is not restricted by the size of the enemy or obstacle; but rather by the size of our faith. The Lord of Hosts protects us. 2. THE LORD OF HOSTS PRESERVES US Isaiah 31:5 5 As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it. - 2 -

There are things that we face in this life that would take us out if it wasn t for the preservation of the Lord of Host. 3. THE LORD OF HOSTS PRESENCE WITH US Psalms 46: The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Psalms 46:11 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. A. His Presence is Powerful 1 Chronicles 16:2 2 Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place. B. His Presence is Penetrating 1 Samuel 16: But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 1 Chronicles 28:9 9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. - 3 -

Psalms 44:20-21 20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; 21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. C. His Presence is Pervasive God is everywhere Psalms 139:-12 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. D. His Presence is Pleasant 1 Chronicles 16:2 2 Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place. Psalms 16:11 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Going one s own way may seem pleasurable and exciting for a time; but for the Christian, living outside the will and presence of God is a truly miserable experience. - 4 -

E. His Presence Promised Genesis 28:15 15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Hebrews 13:5 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. F. His Promise is Precious - 5 -
