POLS 3000 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL THEORY

Political Theologies in Shakespeare s England

Transcription:

the cambridge companion to ARISTOTLE S POLITICS One of the most influential works in the history of political theory, Aristotle s Politics is a treatise in practical philosophy, intended to inform legislators and to create the conditions for virtuous and self-sufficient lives for the citizens of a state. In this Companion, distinguished scholars offer new perspectives on the work and its themes. After an opening exploration of the relation between Aristotle s ethics and his politics, the central chapters follow the sequence of the eight books of the Politics, taking up questions such as the role of reason in legitimizing rule, the common good, justice, slavery, private property, citizenship, democracy and deliberation, unity, conflict, law and authority, and education. The closing chapters discuss the interaction between Aristotle s political thought and contemporary democratic theory. The volume will provide a valuable resource for those studying ancient philosophy, Classics, and the history of political thought. marguerite deslauriers is Professor of Philosophy at McGill University. She is the author of Aristotle on Definition (2007). pierre destrée is Associate Researcher at the Belgian FRS (Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique) and Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve). He has edited several books, including Akrasia in Greek Philosophy (co-edited with Christopher Bobonich, 2007) and Plato and the Poets (co-edited with F.-G. Herrmann, 2011).

acknowledgements Our first debt of gratitude is to the contributors to this volume. The substance of the work is theirs. We are especially grateful for the collaborative spirit the contributors brought to the project, and their willingness to present and to comment on work in progress. We wish to thank Örsan K. Öymen who, both as the Founder and President of the Association of Philosophy, Art, and Science, and as the Founder and Director of Philosophy in Assos, very generously organized a conference at Assos, Turkey in June of 2010 at which versions of many of the chapters in this volume were first presented. A second conference was held at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, in March 2011. The editors wish to thank the Departments of Philosophy and of Political Science, and the Research Group in Constitutional Studies at McGill for their support. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. C. D. C. Reeve arranged with Hackett Publishing Company for permission to quote from his translation of the Politics; the editors wish to thank him and Hackett. We are also indebted to Thornton Lockwood for kind permission to include his topical bibliography on Aristotle s Politics. For philosophical, editorial, and administrative help at various stages of the project, the editors would like to thank many colleagues and students: Joseph Burke, Andrea Falcon, Jacob Levy, Eric Lewis, Sara Magrin, Stephen Menn, Catherine Pakaluk, Michael Pakaluk, Esther Rogan, Geoffrey Sigalet, Marlene K. xiv Acknowledgements philosophical and editorial suggestions amounted to an important contribution to the volume, and the editors wish to express special thanks to him. Aristotle lived and worked for several years in Assos, which was at the time a city-state under the rule of the king Hermias. On the cover of this book the image of the temple of Athena the goddess of science and the arts, as Aristotle himself tells us (Politics VIII 6, 1341b7 8) commemorates his association, and ours, with Assos.
