National Catholic Schools Week Begins! Dear Friends in Christ, National Catholic Schools Week begins this Sunday. While not everyone in our parish has had the benefit of a Catholic education, I know that many of us have. I myself was fortunate enough to attend Mt. St. Joseph High School as well as Mt. St. Mary s University and several years after graduation, Mt. St. Mary s Seminary. While the pursuit of truth and excellence was instilled in me during those formative years, the most important truths I learned centered on the following foundational questions: Why did God create me? What is God s purpose for my life? How can I find true fulfillment? What does it mean to be truly free? What is the relationship between faith and reason? Why does a Catholic education matter? What role does one s Catholic education play in business and politics? Yes, with a sound Catholic education, answers to all these questions can be found-even as these foundational questions take a lifetime to fully realize in one s life, as a disciple of Christ. How fortunate we are at St. Joseph Church to continue to provide a top-rate Catholic education as we seek to form the future servant-leaders of our Church and society. According to a parish commemorative history book that was produced in 1972, it was On November 19th, 1869, that the Townsend family gave the church the first fourteen acres of the present site and before the end of the year the first schoolhouse was built. The parishioners built the school building before they built their new church, much like the parishioners at St. Clare s in Essex, back in 1950. While the school benefited for many years from the sacrificial service of the Sisters of St. Francis, today the school benefits from the dedicated service of lay teachers and staff, led by the outstanding team of our Principal, Mr. Ken Pipkin, and our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Chrissie Ashby. Let me conclude with a few facts about St. Joseph School. The enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year saw a 17% increase from the prior year. There were 8 new hires last year including teachers and support staff. Our enrollment is currently at 538-Pre-K through 8. Over 95% of our graduates go on to attend a Catholic high school. Our graduating class received over 1 million dollars in scholarships from Catholic high schools last year. As a parish community, we should be quite proud of these numbers. I want to thank all of you for your support of our parish school - in various ways. Let us pray for the children of St. Joseph School. May the Catholic formation they receive while attending St. Joseph School prepare them for the rest of their lives, as they seek to find answers to their deepest questions. God bless,

In addition to this book, you will be given online access to the DVD presentations that accompany this program. We will be having the Mass Celebrated for the Sick & Suffering during the weekend of February 10th and 11th, with the Anointing of the Sick offered after each Mass. MASS CELEBRATED FOR THE SICK & SUFFERING WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 10TH & 11TH ANNOINTING OF THE SICK AFTER ALL MASSES IN THE CHAPEL February 11 th is the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, France. For many years, since her appearances to St. Bernadette of Soubirous in 1858, Our Blessed Mother Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Lourdes, has been a special patroness for all the sick and suffering. Millions of people visit the shrine each year to pray to Our Lady of Lourdes for healing in soul and body, and for strength in their trials. On the weekend of February 10 th - 11 th, all those who are suffering from serious illness are welcome to join us at St. Joseph Church for a Solemn Blessing for the sick at all the weekend Masses and to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick in the chapel after all masses. Join us as we pray for the patronage and blessing of Our Lady of Lourdes for all those that are sick among us, that they may receive healing, hope, and strength as they bear the cross of their illness for their salvation and that of the whole world.

Weekly Bible Reflection: Put yourself in this week s Gospel reading. Imagine that you are sitting in the synagogue in Capernaum when Jesus comes in and starts teaching? What do you think he s saying? Imagine that you are listening to Jesus teach when a man yells out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God!" In front of you, Jesus rebukes him saying, "Quiet! Come out of him!" You sit astonished as an unclean spirit comes out of him. What is your reaction? At the end of the Gospel, Mark says: His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. Are you one of the people who is making him famous? Or are you afraid to talk about him with those around you? Look at your day to day life. Do you make him famous among your friends or do you forget everything he is and has done for you? Our Middle School Youth Group and High School Youth Group need new names! Do you have a suggestion on what our youth group should be called? Email Betsy with your submission! You can email her at bpalmer@stjoefullerton.org. Volume 1, Issue 19, January 28, 2018

ADVERTISE Call: 410-578-3600 for more information Excerpt from Fr. Joe Breighner s More Reflections Along A Country Road Good Example The most effective way we share our scriptures, our understanding of the sacraments, our prayer life and our image of God, is by how we live. As someone has profoundly put it, People may not always believe what you say, but they will always believe what you do. So our effort is to live as Jesus asked us to live when He gave the criteria for entering the kingdom of God, I was hungry and you fed me; thirsty and you gave me something to drink; naked and you clothed me; in prison and you visited me; a stranger and you took me in Put simply, the best way to show our belief in God is To Order A Copy of Fr. Joe Breighner s Book through the sermon of our lives. Send $10.00 plus $4.50 for postage & handling to When we treat the least person the way we treat God, FATA P.O. Box 4889 Baltimore, MD 21211 then we become believable and God becomes visible.
