Where Angels Fear to Tread... We are deep into the season of Lent, one of the special seasons of the Christian year. It is a season of introspection, discipline and faith formation. How are you doing with all of that? We are also at the time of year when we start looking for hopeful signs of spring to bring our snowy cold winter to an end. We are not seeing tulips yet but there are warmer temperatures in the forecast and the days are getting longer. Lent and the arrival of spring go hand in hand. I look upon the Lenten season as a journey towards a stronger relationship with God (and my community) and spring is a season that arrives with hope and the expectation of better days ahead. It reminds me of our Methodist idea that we are all going on to perfection. We leave the old useless stuff in the past and go forward with a renewed spirit. We have several ongoing opportunities that you might want to join if you are interested in deepening your faith. We have upcoming worship opportunities that include special music, celebrations and missions. There are some ongoing faith formation classes including my Sunday night class on 'Faith in the 21st Century.' Our choir is working on special music for Holy Week and Easter so you might think about lending your voice this season. Our men's group on Thursday morning and our United Methodist Women continue to offer their excellent ministry to anyone that would like to join in. In our longer range planning, we have a mission trip to help with hurricane relief heading to Texas this summer and I am planning to host a seminar on endof-life issues to talk to experts about wills, directives and funeral planning. We are also starting up a new 'evangelism team' to help our church to reach out to the community and welcome in visitors. We have so many good things happening at Path of Grace this season. We are embracing the optimism of the dawning springtime and the call to deepen our faith in Lent. Sign up for something special this season and watch your faith blossom and grow! Blessings to you all! Pastor Tom Biatek thomas.biatek@pathofgraceumc.org Easter Offering Our Easter offering will be used to establish a discretionary fund for the church to help people in need. We have had an increase in our community of people in need looking to Path of Grace UMC for assistance and have had a growing need with our Karen community for help as well. This fund will allow us to give immediate financial support for food, housing and other emergency needs. SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP SERVICES at 10:00 AM Join us each week in our Sanctuary with Fellowship Time following the service. Pastor Tom s Lenten Sermon Series for Lent will be asking the question "what is a life lived in faith?' We will discuss faith in the 21st century, living your faith daily and living a Heroic Faith. Watch for the symbols of our faith each week, including a rainbow, Abraham and Sarah, the 10 Commandments, the desert and the New Covenant. SUNDAY NIGHT STUDY: "Faithful in the 21 st Century" Our Lenten Sunday Night Potluck and Study will be an examination of what it means to be "Faithful in the 21 st Century." We will follow Pastor Tom's sermon series and explore how faith and daily life connect. The class starts on February 11 and will end on March 18. Topics will include: God's Gift to Us, Our Gift to God, Rules for Life, Faith in Hard Times, Christ in Our Lives. The meal is at 5:00, study begins at 5:30. INTERGENERATIONAL LENT STUDY: What Makes a Hero by Matt Rawle Wednesdays, Feb. 21 Mar. 21 @ 6:30 PM For families of all ages and stages How does Jesus redefine what it means to be a hero? Good vs. Evil, right vs. wrong, and overcoming adversity are fundamental to how Christians understand salvation. Heroes help us discern the good, fight for what s right, define identity, execute justice, spark revolution, and save lives. Rawle enters the Gospel story to tell quite a different story one obtained through humility, obedience to the cross, and an empty tomb. Come walk the final journey of Jesus during Holy Week. The Stations of the Cross will be set up on Good Friday, March 30 from Noon to 6:30 PM in the East Wing of the church. This meaningful, spiritual experience will be available for anyone to go thru at their own pace. Feel the emotions of the final hours of Jesus life thru scripture, prayer and meditation in these Stations of the Cross. 2 March 2018

Beyond 125 Capital Campaign Update In October of 2013, we met as a congregation, and, breaking into small groups, we developed a potential list of programming initiatives. Those initiatives, along with some lists of other church needs, went to a long-range task force, which developed a 2015-2020 long-range plan. That plan was published in the Beyond 125 grey booklet and is focused on three broad goals: Grow in Faith, Reach New People, and Heal a Broken World. Copies of that booklet are still available in the office. The task force determined that, in order to achieve many of the goals, sub-goals and action steps set out in the plan, significant new money would need to be raised. In June of 2014, the James Company was engaged to assist us in raising the necessary resources, which, in turn, led to the winter/spring 2015 Beyond 125 capital campaign. After over three years of successful fundraising and progress toward meeting our goals, the fundraising effort officially comes to a close on Monday, April 30, 2018. A few of the many accomplishments achieved over the last three years include: significant improvements in our grounds and physical plant (e.g. new cooling systems, new furnishings, renovated west wing restrooms, greatly enhanced technological capabilities, new landscaping, etc.) and a serious effort to expand our reach and our programming options (e.g. upgraded website presence, a new church name, FaithWalk Sunday school, new curriculum, and a variety of activities for children, youth, families, such as the Easter petting zoo and service opportunities like Feed My Starving Children. We still have a ways to go, especially with regard to raising our visibility and continuing to enrich our programming outreach and options. In 2017, Beyond 125 provided salary and other support of nearly $43,000 targeted toward 125 goals, such as maintaining and expanding programming for children and youth, providing snack packs and winter clothing to area children, and management of the community garden. An additional $9,000 went to support Sunday morning hospitality, curriculum purchases, the summer mission trip to the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation, and adult ministries. In 2018, Beyond 125 dollars amounting to $32,000 is supporting staff and volunteers to continue these efforts. As examples, on the morning of March 3 Jim and Janet Beard, experienced church growth workers, will share their expertise in a Beyond 125 sponsored event, and this event will be followed by a church council planning retreat on March 6 where committee chairs and members will seek to incorporate church growth ideas from the Beards presentation and also focus on committee (e.g. missions, trustees, hospitality, communications, etc.) efforts to reach 125 goals. To date the Beyond 125 campaign has raised $472,629. $30,000 has been placed in the Permanent Endowment Fund as reserve dollars that the trustees can access for emergencies. $41,650 is currently available to spend, and $73,000 of pledge dollars remains to be collected. For more detailed accounting numbers, see pages 67 and 69 of the 2017 church annual report. Important work remains to be done and remaining pledge dollars will assist greatly in that effort. Upcoming Mission Opportunity: Generous Spirit Food Drive Every March, together with area faith communities, organizations and Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul we have collected food items and financial donations for the Department of Indian Work food shelf. Please follow your generous spirit and donate some of the items listed below or give a financial contribution. Women of our local unit led worship following a theme of United Methodist Women in Mission. Each year, the UMW unit honors someone who has given of herself to our church ministries. This year, we recognized Liz Jones. Our recognition pin recipient has been active at Path of Grace from the first day she joined. She has raised her daughters in our church and has hosted several foreign exchange students. She is a Unit member and is always available to help whenever there is a need. Liz has been a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years, has chaired the Spiritual Development and Education team, and has always played an active role in supporting our youth program. Liz has volunteered with several of our cookie/craft sale fundraisers and is quick to lend a hand with after church meals. Liz has participated on our Mission and Outreach team and she and her husband are active in the Connection fellowship group and play in our Friday night volleyball league. Liz is currently the chair of our Staff Relations team and has been a wonderful leader throughout all of the recent staff changes. Winter Gathering Recap On Saturday, February 24, about 65 women and men gathered for a lovely morning of food and fellowship. We were treated to a delicious meal (made by Rebekah and Naomi circles), shared in a time of devotion, and heard stories from our guest speakers: food writer Eleanor Ostman and renowned caterer Soile Anderson. Using an interview format, we heard Soile s story, beginning with her early life in eastern Finland, to opening a Wild West restaurant in her hometown, to starting her Deco Catering company, to becoming one of the most sought-after Kosher caterers in Minnesota, to owning and operating the Taste of Scandinavia restaurants. It was a delightful program with Soile also demonstrating making flower onions and tomatoes. We were able to purchase recent books written by Marilyn and Soile and had time to chat with the authors after the program. Thank you to all who helped make the morning such a wonderful event. When disaster strikes around the globe Haiti s 2010 earthquake or Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 so many watching the drama unfold on our living room televisions feel entirely helpless. How could any one person make a difference in the wake of such widespread devastation? As responders around the globe scramble to help survivors, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, UMCOR, is prepared to act. The money collected on this one Sunday pays 100% of the administrative costs for UMCOR allowing all moneys collected for specific disaster campaigns to go directly to those affected by the disaster. Please give what you can to this important cause. 6 March 2018

Reading council minutes helps you to stay current with the business and ministry life of the church. Hearing Assistance Devices Available Our Sanctuary is equipped with hearing assistance technology which can greatly improve your worship experience. The personal hearing assistance devices are located in the Narthex in the cabinet marked with this logo. Please ask any usher to show you where they are and how to use them. We also have large-print worship aides and hymnals available. Again, the ushers can assist you with these on Sunday mornings. 2018 Calendars Getting more of those Free Calendars than you need? Bring them to Church! We are again collecting calendars for local nursing homes. So, instead of tossing these away...save them and drop them off in the "calendar" box in the Fellowship Hall. They will be delivered to thankful residents of Good Sam and the Ramsey County Care Center. They may not be valuable to us, but to residents of these centers, they are very valuable! Thank you! Nancy Herther Thank Yous Thank you to the wonderful ladies who put on the Senior Valentine Luncheon on February 13. Martha & Marsha did a great job organizing. The food & decorations prepared by Marsha were outstanding. The entertainment provided by Cathie & Linda was so much fun. And thanks to Mary and Laurie for helping serve and clean up. What a great event! Thank you so much to my church family for all of your love and support during my recent health crisis. Your prayers, cards, emails, visits, meals, and calls have meant so much. The beautiful prayer shawl I received from the Ministry Team is providing me with warmth and comfort. I feel truly blessed to have each of you in my life.
