Title: Churches Ephemera Subject Files Inclusive Dates: 1814-2011 (bulk 1918-1990) Summary/Abstract: Contains a wide variety of materials, mostly from the twentieth century, about Nashville area churches. Physical Description/Extent: 2 cu. ft. Language: In English. Stack Location: Closed stacks workroom Repository: Nashville Room, Nashville Public Library, 615 Church St., Nashville, TN 37219 Scope and Contents of the Collection Contains a wide variety of materials, mostly from the twentieth century, about Nashville area churches. Includes church histories, biographies of local ministers and other prominent persons in the Christian religious life of Nashville; printed sermons; church bulletins; membership lists; promotional literature; church periodicals and related literature; architectural information on historic church buildings; information about particular churches and their function or activities during wartime; charitable and relief efforts undertaken by local churches; church-related businesses, printing and publishing houses, associations, schools, homes, and similar types of enterprises conducted under church direction; church anniversaries and special events, including Christian holidays such as Easter and Christmas; and a variety of other materials. Denominations represented in the collection include: Apostolic; Baptist; Catholic; Christian; Church of Christ; Cumberland Presbyterian; Episcopal; Greek Orthodox; Lutheran; Methodist - A.M.E.; Methodist; Nazarene; non-denominational churches; Presbyterian; Unitarian/Universalist; and United Church of Christ. The most numerous materials concern Baptist, Church of Christ, and Methodist churches. A large quantity of materials from First Presbyterian Church and Downtown Presbyterian Church which span the entire twentieth century are part of this collection, including many of the types of items described above. Particularly noteworthy are printed sermons and church bulletins from Dr. James I. Vance and Dr. Walter R. Courtenay. Documents, letters, brochures and publications detail the nature of the separation of the church in 1955, resulting in the move of First Presbyterian Church to the Oak Hill area south of Nashville, and the renaming of the congregation at the old building to Downtown Presbyterian Church.
